Title: Jamos & Baseball Rumors
Post by: Marshal Dillon on June 11, 2016, 11:40:58 AM
Any names being dropped around T-town about potential hires as the new Tide baseball manager? Is the AD consulting the genius's at the Braves organization for guidance?

 ???

There isn't much being said other than some names that the fans would like to see hired. Bill Battle sent out an email that they wouldn't do much about replacing the coach until post season play is over. Now you can read into that however you like but it seems they have their persons of interest but their season isn't over yet. :dunno:

Yeah, I naturally assumed they were waiting for the end of the College World Series since all the good coaches are in the playoffs. Would have thought 2 or 3 names would have been mentioned & leaked out.

Keep in mind you're asking J, not the press.   ;)

Bring on Bobby Cox, part-time!  He's not too old and considering he would probably get ejected every other game.

Not a bad idea. I mean, we'd end up in the CWS every year, only to lose, but it's better than what we've had going on lately.  8)

Rumor has it that the short list for the next baseball coach is Cliff Godwin (East Carolina) and David Pierce (Tulane).

How good was each of these teams? Although neither plays in the SEC. RTR!

Both made regionals and East Carolina made it to a super regional, almost beating Texas Tech, which would have sent them to the CWS.

Jim Scholssnagle is the coach of TCU. They are going to their 3rd consecutive CWS and are 47-16 right now. He has been at TCU 12 years. He makes around $850,000 a year. Read where Pierce of Tulane pursued by Texas. Godwin of East Carolina is coaching at his alma mater. Only been there 2 years. College baseball coaching salaries are jumping up. Bama needs to be prepared to pay at least $1 million a year for its next coach. Gaspard was making around $420,000.

Per the "rumor mill", the search for a new baseball coach isn't going as well as most folks would like. I, like some other folks, thought a new coach would be announced by the end of this week but I'm not so sure of that now. I'm now wondering just how much Bama is willing to pay for a new coach. ;)

With the new facilities, I didn't think it would take that long to get someone. You're right, J, looks like they may need to open up the pocketbook.

Latest rumor is Greg Goff, Louisiana Tech head coach, will be named Bama's head coach tomorrow. :dunno:

More info on Greg Goff. He's 45 and was a pitcher in college. He's coached at Montevalo, Campbell, & La. Tech. Doesn't look bad, has been a consistent winner.

Here's more info.

Quote
Goff led Louisiana Tech to a 42-20 record (19-11 in conference) and an appearance in the Starkville NCAA Regional this past season.

During Goff’s first season at Ruston, he elevated Tech’s previous season win total by ten to garner a 25-27 record which was the second-highest winning percentage of any first-year baseball coach in Tech history. They also showed significant improvement in almost every category whether it was for pitching, hitting, or defense.

He's definitely got a solid track record of building good teams. Of course, the SEC is the Big Dog of college baseball.

I wonder who Bill Battle looked to for advice in this process.

Never judge a book by it's cover. I know nothing about our new coach other than what folks are saying about him, mostly bad, and I can't say I agree with most of what has been said. I have to think back to the days when the Mid-Major schools first made their big splash in the college basketball world and look where we are today, they make up a good potion of the tournament teams any more. We are starting to see more and more of the smaller Div 1 schools showing up in the post season baseball tournaments each year as well. Just because he has only coached at smaller schools, it doesn't make him a bad coach.

I've been wrong more than I've ever been right but I do believe in giving someone a chance before I drown him. ;)

I'm lost. What folks are upset with his hiring? Who were they expecting us to get? I guess they never heard of Jim Wells. He came from mighty Northwestern State (LA.) to Alabama. All he did was win 6 SEC Tournaments & take us to 3 CWS's.

Sounds to me like CBB had a good interview process.  Several phoners and then a few face-to-face.  So Goff did something to stand out in all that.  Point in his favor.

Goff has run a college program and has some feel for what is involved in doing that.  Yea, SEC is a bigger stage but if he understands what's needed to put together a winning baseball program, then the question will be how well he can execute his plan.

Like all college teams, recruiting will be critical.  Goff mentioned "owing the State of Alabama" in his press conf.  An indication that he knows how important recruiting is.  If CBB didn't feel the guy would be a good recruiter, he wouldn't have hired him.

So I'm with J... Gotta trust CBB...Goff has decent credentials.  Let's give him a chance.

I saw Goff on the news.  He seemed energized/excited for the opportunity.  If he can coach with that enthusiasm, we could have a good un.
