On Monday, it was announced Kuechly won the Nagurski Trophy, which is awarded annually to the best defensive player in college football. The junior linebacker beat out Alabama safety Mark Barron, LSU cornerback Morris Claiborne, Illinois end Whitney Mercilus and Penn State tackle Devon Still.

Kuechly led college football in total tackles for a second straight season with 191 (102 unassisted), a whopping 16 per game on average.

Kuechly has definitely had an All-American season; had he not played for a 4-8 team, his name would probably be more recognizable.

Were all of his tackles in his own endzone?
How could he be this good and the team go 4-8?

When your defensive line resembles a damaged colander, it's easy to accumulate those tackles. Apparently, he was the only one on the team doing it.

He apparently was the only guy making tackles for BC. They are a bad team.

This undersized LB wouldn't even started at Alabama, LSU, Georgia,Florida, Arkansas, Miss St, or USCe!!!! Maybe and I said maybe he would have started at the barn and Ole Miss, only teams in west. May have started at Kentucky and Tennessee. He wouldn't have even started at Vandy!

He doesn't even compare to the past winners of these awards. All past winners of these awards played big boy football and are in the NFL. I don't see this guy getting drafted.

What a croc!!

Were all of those tackles 15-20 yards downfield, from their won/loss record he didn't make too many behind the line of scrimmage.  Undecided

Most of the awards this year have been a joke...unbelievable..the voters thumbing their nose at the truly best..superior players..who rightfully should have won them, in the toughest conference in the nation...

I haven't seen this kid play, but it seems to me that the defensive player of the year should play on a team that plays defense.   Tinfoil Hat

I'm afraid that's asking a little too much. You need to lower your standards, just like the majority of award committees.  Wink

This is just a little extra incentive for our defensive players to get them ready to play. Not like they need any playing for Alabama's #14 National Championship.
