Title: Atlanta Braves Being Dismantled
Post by: Marshal Dillon on January 14, 2015, 06:33:13 PM
When the Braves traded Jody Upton, I knew something big was up. Read the article for a good analysis.

Quote
The Braves and Astros have agreed upon a trade that would send Evan Gattis to Houston for three prospects. The deal was not yet finalized, with Gattis in Houston to get a physical.

Quote
3. If it were not obvious the Braves are pretty much going to be a non-factor to the Mets and others trying to contend in the NL East in 2015 (and probably 2016), the Gattis trade emphasizes it further.
The Braves started this offseason with two overt goals: 1. Get away from the heavily righty/all-or-nothing lineup and 2. Begin to restock what was a dreadful farm system with an eye on being a contender when they move into a new stadium in 2017.

However, even with the three who have since been jettisoned, the single-dimensional Braves scored just 573 runs, which was the second-worst in the majors. So their philosophy became: “We stunk with these guys, we can stink without them while trying to set ourselves up for the future.” So that is what they have done.

That about sums it up. I'm looking for Ozzie Virgil, Bob Horner, and Glenn Hubbard to get some playing time this season.  :popcorn2:

The article nailed their offensive woes perfectly, one dimensional. Basically, it was hit a home run or strikeout. No speed, no left-handed power, & definitely no clutch hitting.

Only 10 players who started the season last year with the Braves are still with them. That's not counting the incredibly bad GM, Frank Wren, who was fired for incompetence.

[After a long, transaction-filled winter, the Braves have arrived in Florida to begin preparations for the 2015 season. This was the Braves' 25-man roster for opening day last season, a year in which the club went 79-83. The players who are no longer with the team have been crossed out.

Update on strikeout artist BJ Upton.

Quote
B.J. Upton has played his final game with the Atlanta Braves after two frustrating seasons.

The man formerly known as B.J. Upton will spend the next season going by Melvin Upton Jr.

Basically, they're not even trying to win this year and next.  The hope is that prospects will develop and by 2017 when the new ballpark opens they'll be ready to contend again.

Concession prices were not increased? There will be plenty of empty seats in the stadium making it easier to find a good spot to watch a game?

Well you might buy a nosebleed seat ticket and then slide down behind home plate or on the baseline somewhere. You know the Braves will not draw till they win and then if they are winning you will not get a seat. RTR!

More info on the 2015 Braves.

Quote
Nick Markakis, OF: Signed to 4-year deal in December after posting .290/.358/.435 line in 9 seasons in Baltimore. Will be counted on to hit in middle of order.

Shelby Miller, RHP: Penciled in as No. 3 starter after being acquired in Heyward deal. Former No. 1 pick had 3.33 ERA in two-plus seasons with St. Louis.

Jonny Gomes, OF: Signed to one-year contract in January. Has career .861 OPS vs. lefties, so look for him to platoon in left field.

Eric Young, OF: Likely other half of left-field platoon and probable leadoff hitter vs. right-handers. Led NL in steals in 2013 with Mets, but hit poorly last season.

A.J. Pierzynski, C: Fiery veteran could back Bethancourt, or become starter if youngster needs more seasoning. Had career-worst year at plate in 2014, posting .625 OPS.

Albert Callaspo, 2B/3B: Switch-hitter could either hold down full-time 2B job or platoon with Chris Johnson at 3B. Won't wow anyone with bat, but durable and versatile.

Jason Grilli, RHP: Former Pirates closer will look to take over top set-up role from departed Walden. Could also be July trade bait if he excels.

Jim Johnson, RHP: Led AL in saves two straight seasons with Baltimore, but bottom fell out after deal to Oakland last year. Another possible trade chip if he regains form.

Josh Outman, LHP: Has been solid middle reliever since converting from starter two years ago. Will challenge Avilan, Russell for top lefty role.

Are these guys over-the-hill or potential steals?

Jim Johnson bottomed out before he got to Oakland. He led the in saves in 2011 and 2012, but couldn't hit the broadside of a barn in 2013, which is why the O's sent him to Oakland.

Sadly, I expect the Braves to lose at least 90 games & end up with a record like 70-92, 68-94, etc. Sad, fast fall due mainly incompetent management. Concession prices won't drop either.

John Hart has lost his freaking mind. This team is on the verge of returning to pre-1991 status. Re-building is one thing; exploding the whole dang team is another. Getting rid Justin Upton and Heyward were bad enough, but now you get rid of perhaps the best closer in the game?  :wall:

Please let the O's play well this year, or otherwise this baseball season is going to stink.

I'd love to switch managers with you, cb.

Back to the Braves, I heard an interview with John Smoltz on Mike & Mike this morning.  Such a smart and likable guy.  I always liked him despite the uniform he wore.

Also he said he had 14 of 16, 7 of 8, 4 of 4, and 2 of 2 picked in his bracket from the Sweet 16 in.  He's got Wisconsin winning it all tonight.

The 4 most important parts of a baseball team are:

What an idiot GM. We fire one idiot, Wren, & hire another. What a train wreck. Cardinals are sounding pretty good right now.

More on Kimbrel trade.

Quote
— It was the timing of the Craig Kimbrel trade that surprised Braves players more than anything else.

On Sunday, the eve of opening day, they traded their their four-time All-Star closer, the strikeout machine with the lowest ERA in major league history (1.43) by any pitcher with at least 250 innings. It was the latest in a string of deals that have sent away some of the Braves’ best and most popular players.

Chipper Jones reaction.

Quote
Braves icon Chipper Jones took to Twitter (1 2 3 4) to defend the trade from Atlanta’s perspective. “I know it sucks, Braves Country, but once you decide to rebuild, you better go all the way,” he wrote. “You now have a ton of minor league talent that is on the verge of being Major League talent. You now have four picks in the top 54 picks in this year’s draft. And you now have flexibility in your payroll to be able to compete on the free agent market if you so desire.”
