It's a sad day to see the US Space program preparing for their last launch this morning.  Sad

The retirement of Atlantis and its sister shuttles is in line with a plan drawn up years ago, which called for NASA to stop spending money on shuttle flights so it could concentrate on developing spaceships to go beyond Earth orbit. NASA is aiming to send humans to a near-Earth asteroid by 2025 and to Mars and its moons by the mid-2030s.

"We in the government are going to be doing the 'Lewis and Clark' missions," Lori Garver, the agency's deputy administrator, told journalists Thursday.

At least the space program is not shutting down, but apparently it will be some time before the next phase is implemented.

I saw an interview with John Glenn. He was disappointed the Space Shttle is being grounded. He said every other space craft was grounded when the next craft was ready to go. The space program is not shutting down but it sure looks like it.

We watched it projected on some screens in a big conference room here at work.  With 15-20 engineers watching in a group, you know there was some interesting commentary.  Neat experience...proud Atlantis went out with so much grace.

It kind of makes you feel like that guy in college that didn't have a car.

"Hey, you guys were going up to the space station anyway. Why can't we just bum a ride?"

I think it is almost criminal to stop this part of the space program. We will never go to an astroid, NASA will never get the necessary funding.  Sad
Watching the  Atlantis take off made me cry - I'm sad to know that we will never see another shuttle take off from our country.

Stand on the curb and put your thumb out. Russia may give you a ride. Don't that thought make you sick.  Cry

Yes it does. The fact that we have to depend on another country for ANYTHING makes me sick (and yeah, I'll include oil in that category). I just keep hoping that someone will wake up and see what is happening... and SOON!
