Perrin owned a sports bar and restaurant as well as a barbeque restaurant in Decatur.

Pmull, what are you hearing about this? This is very sad.

I could tell you some stuff about Perrin from years ago, but I'm holding back until more info is released. He played at Decatur High School and recruited by Coach Bryant.

Benny was well liked and a local hero in Decatur. Very active in the community. He was still involved with Decatur High School sports where he starred in Football, basketball and baseball. His son was QB for Decatur several years ago. A shock that he committed suicide. The rumor is as he grew older he was suffering from all the football related concussions he got as a player. He was one of the 4,000 players in a lawsuit with the NFL over head related injuries.

My favorite Benny Perrin story took place when I moved to Decatur in 1994. As I was being interviewed they wanted to show me around the town. Knowing I was a big Bama fan they took me to BB Perrin's BBQ which is a local BBG joint/sports bar. All kind of sports related stuff filled the restaurant. The big prize was a football in a glass case that was from the barn game where Bear Bryant won his 315 game to become the all time NCAA wins leader. The last play of the game was a barn Hail Mary that was intercepted by Benny. In all the excitement he ran off the field with the ball and no one even asked for it. About 10 years ago the Bryant museum asked about it and he was kind enough to give it to them. That same ball is in the Bryant museum now.

I did not know Benny well. My oldest daughter cheered for for Youth Pop Warner football until middle school. Benny son was the best player on the team all 3 years. Benny never missed a game. He quietly sat in the stands and cheered for his son's team like any other good father. I rarely saw him after that since his kids went to Decatur and mine to Austin. Benny was the best golfer in the area even in recent years. A scratch player he won most of the local county club events. He is a loss to the community. To my knowledge, no one saw this coming. Very sad. I never heard anything bad about him.

This article is from today's Decatur Daily. Steve Rivers (Father of Phillip Rivers - Chargers QB) was an assistant coach at Decatur when Benny played. Most of the article is about his high school career. He was all-state in football and basketball. He was also a good baseball player.

Perrin remembered for his athletic exploits

The death of Benny Perrin on Friday brought back a flood of memories to those who saw his athletic exploits at Decatur High, for the Alabama Crimson Tide and later in the NFL with the St. Louis Cardinals.

Steve Rivers was an assistant football coach at Decatur under the late Earl Webb. Perrin was an All-State and All-American quarterback for the Red Raiders in 1977.

“Just the other day I met a guy who played on the Hartselle team that beat us 7-6 in 1976,” Rivers said. “We started talking about Benny and I brought it up about the playoff game with Butler later that year.

“It was late in the game and we needed a touchdown. We were running an option play. If the end crashed, Benny was supposed to pitch the ball. The end didn’t crash, but Benny just kept the ball and ran around the end for a 65-yard touchdown and we won the game (21-14).”

Decatur went 20-5 in Perrin’s two years as starting quarterback. Both seasons ended with heart-breaking losses in the playoffs.
