AUBURN, Alabama -- The NCAA did not find any major rules violations in Auburn's signing of quarterback Cam Newton and has concluded its investigation.

The NCAA enforcement staff also concluded its investigation into charges by four former players on HBO who accused the school of providing extra benefits. Again, it found no wrongdoing.

The NCAA issued a statement Wednesday saying it interviewed more than 50 people to see if Auburn provided Newton or his family improper benefits. The NCAA said it could not find any reason to keep the investigation open because its findings did not meet a "burden of proof" that Auburn did anything wrong in signing the quarterback who led Auburn to the national title last season.

The NCAA said the investigation has to meet a higher standard "than rampant public speculation online and in the media.

This is how I see the questioning going down;

NCAA: You know anything about anything?
Aubren: I don't know nothing.
NCAA: Sorry to bother you. Thank you for your time.

Repeat 79 more times.

NCAA statement on Auburn football investigation

After conducting more than 80 interviews, the NCAA has concluded its investigation into Auburn University. The NCAA enforcement staff is committed to a fair and thorough investigative process. As such, any allegations of major rules violations must meet a burden of proof, which is a higher standard than rampant public speculation online and in the media. The allegations must be based on credible and persuasive information and includes a good-faith belief that the Committee on Infractions could make a finding. As with any case, should the enforcement staff become aware of additional credible information, it will review the information to determine whether further investigation is warranted.

This doesn't prove that Auburn is clean. It just proves that they are good at getting away with it. Al Capone was a murderer, thief, gun runner, ran prostitutes, loan sharking, extortion, and guilty of every criminal act on the books. But all they could get on him was tax evasion. It didn't mean that he was a legitimate businessman, just that he was good at covering his tracks. Auburn is the Al Capone of college sports.

The NCAA just could not adequately substantiate the charges,-- that is all. Sheridan is convinced he sw the "bagman" and the NCAA sw with him as well. Also there was another person present. If either of the two comes forward, at a later date, the barn is burnt. But the NCAA is merely saying they are finished expending resources on a stalemate.

Interesting that the NCAA came out with this statement. That in itself is not the norm. Around every corner of the carefully worded letter, the NCAA tried to make it clear they were not saying nothing happened. Just that they could not prove it beyond ANY doubt.

It sucks they get to keep a tainted championship, but having to keep Chizik as coach for at least 4-5 more years will be just as damaging as NCAA sanctions.  If Garcia wasn't the worst QB in SEC history Auburn would be 3-3 right now, and lucky not to be 1-5.  Alabama owns the state despite Auburn winning the NC last year.  Auburn will not be any better than they are this year any time in the next 5-10 years.

This is beyond bizarre.  How many times has the NCAA EVER looked into a program for 13 months and not found ANYTHING?  Something just doesn't add up with this whole deal.  There is a good bit of, "As with any case, should the enforcement staff become aware of additional credible information, it will review the information to determine whether further investigation is warranted" from the NCAA right now.
Also, how many times has the NCAA ever issued a school a letter like this?  I would seriously like to know, if anyone can find anything.  I'm thinking that the boogs are making much ado about nothing to try to cast their program in a better light.

I was asked once what constitutes a motel down in boogerland. It’s really a trick question but here’s the proper answer:
If the trailers are shoved up against each other end to end, then it’s a motel. If the trailers are stacked on top of each other, then it’s condos.

I heard months ago that the NCAA did not expect anything on Cam (and wasn't interested).  They looked at the school and current recruits.  http://www.crimsonredsports.com/index.php?topic=2042.0

They have not addressed current players in this episode, so I assume they found nothing there or decided to shelf it until later.
