Not good.  Not good at all for UF but it is good to see that this is being addressed proactively...Can you imagine if this were to have happened at either UT or Awbren?

These have this need to be the best at sports so bad they are willing to do anything, I guess. RTR!

What he took was an over the counter product.  He should have gotten it cleared by the coaches but apparently didn't.  At the very least, his S&C Coach should have known.  I will be surprised if that guy didn't...

Will Grier currently on ESPNU interview.

He didn't say anything different.  OTC, didn't clear it with Florida staff.

He did apologize several times, then left as he was about to cry.

What a sad development this is.  Will change the dynamics in the SEC West and affect the UF-LSU game.

Gotta feel for coach JMcE.

Florida Gators quarterback Will Grier has been suspended for the year for violating NCAA rules, coach Jim McElwain announced Monday.

Grier tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance that was found in an over-the-counter supplement, McElwain said. The positive test carries an automatic suspension of one calendar year from the NCAA, which would mean Grier would not be eligible to return until Florida's seventh game of the 2016 season.. McElwain said the school will appeal the suspension...

He gone.
LSU's golden horseshoe in position.

This also was an NCAA test and not a Florida test.  Not sure why Florida didn't catch it earlier -- maybe they only test for illegal drugs.

Sure the guy bulked up over a year's time.  It's not unusual for kids out of HS to bulk up once they get into a college strength and conditioning program.  I'm not sure what the norm is though.

It sure couldn't have happened at a worse time for Florida. LSU might have a field day with them.

At least Florida has a QB with starting experience.  Unfortunately for them, he is more turnover prone, a bad combination v. LSU.

I think there are a few doobie smokers on the fighting Lesters, as well. They can all be doobie brothers. (I can't believe I said that)

Strange world we live in where a player using a legal OTC supplement is banned for a year but a player with illegal drug use keeps playing.   ???

From what I am hearing, he used the drug Ligandrol. I hear what some of you are saying that if it is sold over the counter there shouldn't be a problem using it but there is. The NCAA has ruled the use of it by players out so it isn't alright to use it, regardless of what people may think.

Says who? Grier is the only one saying that, not Florida. I doubt it's OTC, plus he gained 43 pounds in a year, sounds more like a steroid-like substance or else a lot of peanut butter & jelly sandwiches.

I agree with MD on the massive weight gain. Per the NCAA all schools are furnished with a drug taboo list that should be given to the players. To gain that much weight and a coach doesn't notice and give him a drug test, I smell a rat in the Florida program and they got what they deserved. I think Florida knew and zipped their lips.

I don't get it how everyone here keeps saying that he gained "X" amount of weight in one year.  He is a redshirt freshman which means he has been out of high school for about 1-1/2 years.  Also, how many times can you point out that coaching staffs have accurately stated height and weight?  Who knows if his current published weight is high or low?   But, to answer your question,  Coach Mac said he took an OTC.  Click here to read the entire release. Grier’s suspension was handed down after he tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug, a source told OnlyGators.com early Monday afternoon. The school confirmed as much when McElwain opened up a press conference an hour later.

“Will Grier won’t play this week and obviously in the near future due to taking a supplement, an over-the-counter supplement that had something in it that was on the NCAA list of things that you can’t have,” he began. “It’s something that he feels horrible about. It’s an honest mistake, and yet, can be prevented by just checking with our medical staff. I want everybody to understand that this is a mistake we’ll learn from.”

At the same press conference, Grier confirmed that he “took an over-the-counter supplement that had something in it,” noting he “did not check with the medical staff before taking it.”

The link was interesting because not much of a definitive nature was mentioned. Why all the secrecy about this "supplement?" Like Jamos said, the aroma of a rat is strong. UF is holding back in my opinion. Some reporter will get to the truth & a copy of the test.

Ligandrol is the rumored substance.  https://twitter.com/DanWolken/status/653645179275096064

I wouldn't bank on seeing a copy of the test any time soon, if ever.  Secrecy doesn't always add up to conspiracy.  Perhaps there exist rules about medical testing and privacy rights?  Perhaps there also are rules about coaches discussing specifics of a player's medical results?

Coach Mac said it was OTC.  The NCAA knows what it was, so why would he lie?

To minimize the seriousness of what the "supplement" was & help out his player & satisfy the fans that the player is a victim. Using a supplement is what a couple of baseball players claimed when they tested positive for PED's. That excuse did not help them, either. If the supplement is so minor, Grier could tell us what it was since it would not violate his privacy coming from him.

PED means performing enhancement drug, also known as cheating. It enhances your athletic ability, while illegal drugs hinder your performance. That's why athletes are punished so severely for PED use.

4 game suspension in the NFL.

1 year + eligibility in the NCAA.

Since he admits to taking it, Florida can only appeal the duration of the ban.  They're seeking to have him eligible for the start of the 2016 season.

But I don't buy so much the innocent mistake thing.  That's what they always say.  He probably knew what he was doing.

Of course he knew. All these athletes who get caught make lame excuses.

MLB  80 games (1st offense)  100-162 games (2nd offense)
NBA  No real policy for PED use
