Since we now know for sure that Saban is staying put in Tuscaloosa, we're calling out the folks that jumped the gun and said that Saban was already picking out cowboy boots and orange scarves for his wife, Terry

Texas Christian University beat writer Stefan Stevenson also sent out a tweet that made heads spin. The reporter for the Fort Worth Star Telegram used the vague term "sources" and reported something he heard that was unconfirmed. The inaccurate report was retweeted almost 2,000 times.

This episode has been one of the weirder incidents in sports reporting that I can remember.  Texas still had a coach, Saban had said repeatedly that he wasn't going anywhere, yet every news outlet in the country was breathlessly reporting every unsourced rumor that emerged as if Saban and UT were actually discussing a contract. 

By the end I was beginning to wonder if there some fire in all the smoke, but it turns out to be just a bunch of news reporters trying to capitalize off the opportunity to draw in two of the largest and most enthusiastic fan bases in the country and a few low-character buffoons spreading false information in the hopes that if it turned out to be true they'd be seen as "insiders".

Calling it yellow journalism would be a slap in the face to the "yellow journalists" of the late 19th-early 20th century. This isn't journalism at all; its grandstanding.
