Around Campus / The Quad / Re: "Will a four-team playoff mean extra championship chances for the SEC?"

I believe the final BCS standings are before the bowl games. Once the #1 and #2 teams are picked for the NCG, they no longer serve a purpose and they do not release another one.
A couple of weeks ago I documented that 3 out of the last 6 years the SEC would have fielded 2 teams in a 4 team playoff. If I remember correctly, Alabama was indeed one of those teams in 2008.
I'm not sure where the discrepancy comes in. Maybe a cut and paste error from the 2006 listing?
Could be. I assumed that there was a final standing at the end of the year to crown the BCS winner, but still LSU was not up there, so must be a cut and paste error.

Here are the times that one conference has supplied two of the top four teams in the final BCS ratings:
2001: Big 12 -- Nebraska, Colorado 2004: Big 12 -- Oklahoma, Texas 2005: Big Ten -- Penn State, Ohio State 2006: Big Ten -- Ohio State, Michigan 2006: SEC -- Florida, LSU 2008: Big 12 -- Oklahoma, Texas 2008: SEC -- Florida, LSU 2010: Pac-10 -- Oregon, Stanford 2011: SEC -- LSU, Alabama Mike Slive will need to make a case for this argument. I fear he will be outnumbered when it comes to defending non-champions being in the playoff. This is final BCS standings, after bowl games. Bama was in the top 4 in 2008 going into the bowl games and would have made that playoff.

If you look at a coaches entire career, CSS would fight it out with CLM for 2nd. Just looking at what they have built at their current jobs, CNS is of course first, followed by Miles then Petrino (until a month ago). JMHO but CSS has only had a couple better than average seasons at USCe-- his body of work at UF is another matter.
I think listing CSS in 3rd is about right. USCe is a tough play to win consistantly. He has steadily improved that program since he got there. It has taken longer than he wanted but they are doing better than any other time since they joined the SEC. IMO the only places harder to win in the SEC are Ole Miss, Miss St, KY and Vandy. I agree with your Petrino comment. He would be 3rd if he could keep his pants zipped. I agree about CSS. USCe is a hard place to consistently win. The State of SC only puts out so many quality players a year, and USCe has to compete with Clemson for in-state talent, plus Georgia to the south. There is a reason USCe was terrible until Holtz got the program heading in the right direction. I'm not so sure I would place Petrino third. He definitely had the potential, and maybe was on the verge of a breakthrough. But I think he needed another year or two to show what he could do. And while his offense was perhaps the best in the SEC, his defense needed work.

I don't know how much that game helped Bear Bryant in recruiting African American athletes, something he was going to do anyway, but it may have made his job easier -- no one was going to second guess him, and he wasn't going to hear about it.

It looks like they are sticking to their story that the remaining votes are legitimate, and ignoring the fact that I have told them multiple times that even right now at this very moment you can still vote as many times as you want. Super Coach,
Thank you for contacting us again about the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award for softball. As you suggest, we are monitoring the voting situation throughout the vote period. We have, indeed, taken votes away from several of the finalists for whom we have found illegally cast votes. None of the finalists have has had any amount close to the 35,000 votes you illegally cast for Alabama's finalist.
In the future, if you want to correspond with the Senior CLASS Award staff, give us a call and we would be happy to discuss this issue further.
Regards,
Laurie Bollig
Fixed her grammar. Wow, I must have clicked "modify" on the last post. Sorry, SC. Maybe that early-morning thunderstorm that awoke me at 2:22 is taking its toll! for the work on this poll. By the way, I thought the original was correct, but I certainly am not an expert on this subject. None have... One has... Two have... Many have.. Some have... It really depends on what the word "none" is referring to. Since this sentence refers to a plural, "finalists," either form of the verb is considered acceptable. Initially, "none" was considered by some to be a contraction of "not one," which is always singular. However, these days either singular or plural is considered OK if the context is a plural.

With the depth Bama has developed over the years, who starts is not the most important. One player may fit better in some game plans where others may fit better in different game plans. I can see them getting significiant playing time if they start or not.
This is true at Bama much more so than many other schools. Saban follows an NFL approach of getting the right personnel into the game for the situation. While other schools may also do this, I don't think they have the quality depth that Bama has, with only a handfull of teams even coming close.

Around Campus / The Quad / Re: "Is Alabama’s Football Program Experiencing the Fatigue Factor?"
|
on: May 07, 2012, 10:43:03 AM

Well, there is a point to this article. The fatigue is manifest via humans and that is why IMHO it's important that there be some objective factor -- like the computer rankings and the strength of schedule computation -- in the BCS ranking formula. Poll voters get tired of Bama being up there each year, and don't want to believe we are as good as we are, year after year. The objective BCS factors help mitigate that.
Another thing that helps us is playing and winning major intersectional non-conf games, such as Michigan this fall.
Last year, Bama was helped by LSU's whopping of Oregon early in the season. Had LSU not played Oregon, I think Oregon makes it to the BCS Title game. This year, SEC teams have softer non-conference schedules. The Michigan v. Bama game is probably the most important. Other notable non-conference games are Ole Miss v. Texas, and the usual ACC games, Florida v. Florida State, Georgia v. Georgia Tech, South Carolina and Auburn both play Clemson, and Vandy v. Wake Forest. It will be harder for a second SEC team to make the title game this year for that reason -- no decent PAC12 opponents (LSU plays Washington), only Michigan from the Big10, and only Texas (v. Ole Piss) from the Big12. It would take a miracle for an SEC only championship. (Michigan, Texas, Washington and maybe Clemson or Florida State going undefeated in conference play but being blown out by their SEC opponents). This is my favorite quote from the article: Right now the voters, the media and the nation are just tired of Alabama. And the Bama fans are just loving it.

What the heck is going on there? What next, sex offender is the biggest booster? Urban Meyer comes out of the closet? An Ohio State recruit has told the Buckeyes he will not attend the university, according to several published reports, amid concern that a convicted sex offender had interactions with players and recruits associated with the program.Click here for link

Brian Kelly should be seriously concerned that his quarterback was run down from behind by some doughnut eating cop with 50 lbs. of gear hanging off him.
the comments to that story are hilarious
some ND fan wants Kelly to give the cop a scholly stating "we need him"
Funny stuff!
