                                                                            ULL vs Bama

First, congrats to the Bama coaches and players on a great victory. Bama’s practices are probably more difficult than this game was.

OFFFENSE:   The offense put together 608 yards of total offense.  They had 340 passing and 268 rushing.  These stats could have been a lot worse for ULL if Bama hadn’t substituted as much as they did.  The increased their rushing total as well as they should have playing an undersized/undermanned team. As far as negative plays, Bama had 2 sacks and 1 tackle for a loss and there were no 3 and outs for this game on the offensive side of the ball.  As far as plays for over 10 yards, Bama had 9 pass plays and 9 running plays.  Bama got into the red zone 8 times and scored 5 touchdowns, missed 2 field goals and ran out the clock to end the game.   Bama did score 2 touchdowns from outside the red zone, while one touchdown came on special teams on the punt return.  Basically, the offense did what they wanted most of the day.  The moved the ball with the backups but didn’t come away with points as two field goals were missed inside the red zone.  This means Bama left at least 6 points on the field.

QB:   Tua was very good as he was 8 for 8 for 128 yards Jalen was 4 for 6 for 118 yards but should have been 5 for 6 as one of his passes was dropped.  Jalen’s is throwing the ball so much better this year.  A huge part is the improvement in his decision making and confidence in throwing the ball.  He should have had a pick but fortunately the defender dropped the ball.  This throw was not a good decision.  Jones was 1 or 2 for 94 yards and a touchdown.  He could have been 2 for 2 because I thought the incomplete should have been caught.

RB:  The running backs combined for 247 yards on 40 carries for a 6.71 average.  All ran hard and when called upon to pass block did well.  The best part about the running game of Bama, is they have depth in this position which means they will be fresh later in the year when the games get tougher.

Rec:   Five different receivers had catches yesterday.  Yesterday, Ruggs was the leading receiver.  I would have to check, but I think Smith has surpassed his total catches and total yards from last year.  I also noticed them blocking well on some of the running plays that covered more than 10 yards.

OL:  The OL did good job yesterday as they should have.  This should be expected as they had the physical advantage against a lesser team.  What I will say, is they seem to have a better pad level coming off the ball.  They were able to get to the second level more than once.  The sack that was given up came on a delayed blitz where there was basically not drop by the QB.  It seemed to be an RPO and I couldn’t see what happened to the receiver on the play.  I will have more faith in the OL when they make these kind of strides against a more physical team.

Def:  The defense had a huge first half and a drop off in the second half.  The big concern of the defense at this point for me is the missed tackles.  Bama gave up 288 total yards of offense.  ULL had 200 yards rushing and 88 passing.  As far as negative plays, Bama had 3 tackles for losses, 2 sacks, forced a fumble they didn’t recover, and had 2 interceptions.  The defense is credited for 4 three and outs all which occurred in the first half.  Bama gave up 3 first downs in the first half and 12 in the second half.  I know many backups were playing in the second half, but the missed tackles help ULL keep drives alive.  As far as plays of 10+ yards, they had 4 pass plays and 6 running plays.  They got into the red zone twice and scored touchdowns both times.  The good news is they didn’t get there until the 4th quarter when the game was out of hand.

DL:  They played okay.  Bama did rotate players in so it was difficult for me to see who really just stood out.

LB:  The LB’s played pretty well.  Many of the passes were short and they had to make the plays along with the safety and nickle/dime backs.  One thing that really impressed me from the LB’s was the hustle by McMillon on the long run where he stopped them right before they scored.  He could have easily given up.

DB:  I thought they played well.  The longest pass play was 23 yards.  It looked to me that ULL only threw the ball over 10 yards or attempted to throw the ball over 10 yards 10 times.  Out of these plays, there was a sack, 2 interceptions, a touchdown, and many incompletions.  The DB’s seem to be in position most of the time.  Some of the plays that went for over 10 yards were passes that were completed underneath and there were yards after the catch.

Special Teams:  The good part of the special teams were the blocked punt and the punt return for the kickoff.  They also had a good kickoff return.  It did look like Bama coaches made a change on the kickoff return team as Robinson moved up and got a good kickoff return as ULL was trying to pooch.  The negative was the 2 missed field goals that took points off the board.    Some of the kickoffs weren’t pretty but they were effective.

Penalties:  Bama had 3 five yards penalties that they overcame each time.  Two were on offense and 1 was on special teams.

Finally, this was a game to work on fundamentals especially in the offensive line.  In my opinion, I saw better technique.  I also understand there may be some players who are healthy now that could push other players.  I will say it was evident Bama didn’t take this game lightly which coaches always fear when playing a substandard opponent.

                                                                                                      A&M vs Bama

First, congrats to the Bama coaches and players on a great victory.  This was a game where the defense came up big when they needed too.  I also want to say I thought Locksley called a heck of a game.

OFFFENSE:   The offense put together 524 yards of total offense, which included 415 passing and 190 rushing.  Most of the rushing yards came after the first half, as A&M did a very good job stopping the Bama rushing attack.  As for negative plays, I have Bama with 7 tackle for losses and 1 fumble which they recovered themselves.  They only had 2 three and outs.  For plays that covered over 10+ yards, Bama had 17 pass plays and 3 running plays.  Bama got into the red zone 3 times and scored 3 touchdowns and scored 3 touchdowns from outside the red zone as well as kicked 1 field goal.  It appeared to me that most of Bama’s running success was found on the edge.  Also, A&M wasn’t loading up the box to stop the run.  As far as the passing game goes, the pocket was pretty clean most of the day and Bama gave up no sacks.  This was probably Bama’s worse day for 3rd down conversions as they were only 4 for 10.

QB:   Tua had a record day for his early career.  He completed 73% of his passes.  His completions averaged 17.59 yards per catch.  He made some big throws that were right on target.  I thought he did miss a couple of throws that could have been completed.  Jalen was 3 for 3 for 28 yards.  Jalen was involved with a play where there was a fumble.  It looked to be a mix up on the play between Harris and Hurts.

RB:  They had a tough day running the ball, especially in the first half.  The running backs combined for 21 carries for 106 yards.  This is over a 5-yard average, but 35 came on 1 run by D Harris.  Again, most of these yards came in the second half.  Overall, the RB’s did a decent job pass blocking when called upon. One big play was the 57-yard pass that went for the touchdown and Jacobs had 2 blocks on the play.

Rec:   Six different receivers caught passes not counting running backs.  Jeudy led the way with 6 catches, while I smith and D Smits both had 4 catches.  I think Irv Smith is one catch away from his total from last year.  Three different receiver had touchdowns receptions.

OL:  The OL did good job pass blocking but there were many stalemates in the running game.  This is a question I have had so far.  Can the OL get the push for a running game when needed.

Defense:  The defense played well in crucial situations.  There was a short 13-yard punt, giving A&M great field position in the 2nd half, and Bama got a 3 and out when A&M actually lost yardage.  As far as negative plays, I have the defense with 3 tackles for losses, 7 sacks, and 2 interceptions, one that set up the first touchdown.  For 3 and outs, Bama had 1 in the first half and 3 in the second half.  The first drive was a 2 and out because of the interception by Wilson.  For plays that covered 10+ yards, 15 passing plays and 6 running plays.  Many of the passing plays came in the 2nd half when Bama was probably playing a little safe defense.  Most of the running plays were when the QB ran QB draws where there were at least 3 missed tackles and the loss of contain either on the outside or rushing too far up the field and opening a gap to allow the QB to escape.  I also think the defense underestimated the QB’s speed.  A&M got into the red zone 4 times where they kicked 2 field goals and scored 2 touchdowns.  They also kicked on field goal outside the red zone.

DL:   I thought they played well, except when the edge lost contain or rushed too far up the field.  Each of them seemed to make a big play at some point, but Buggs and Davis stood out.  Williams didn’t have the stats but looked to be a disrupter during the game.  He was especially good taking up 2 blockers and keeping them off the LB’s.  I will say I have seen Anoma in back up duty and I like what I see.  Their pressure created the first turnover on the 2nd play of the game.

LB: The LB’s played well in my opinion.  The were involved with stopping the running game as well as covering in the passing game.  They did make a couple of mistakes, but overall, they did a good job adjusting to the formations and plays of A&M.

DB:  I thought they played well.  They gave up 55 yards passing in the first half, and 208 in the 2nd half.  This being said, they were playing a little safer coverage to make A&M work the ball down the field as opposed to giving up the big play.  I noted earlier most of the plays that covered 10+ yards, most were in the 2nd half.

Special Teams:  Field goal kicking was good.  Punting was a combination of good and not so good. I don’t know why the punter was taking those steps to his right like a rugby style punt.   All kickoffs were good except 1.  One of the biggest things that worked for Bama on special teams was their punt coverage.  I also have to say, A&M’s punter helped Bama by kicking the ball in the endzone instead of pinning them back most of the day.  He is someone who can flip field position and never angled the ball to the sideline.   I guess they were just too scared of the Bama punt return.

Penalties:  Bama had 9 penalties for 82 yards.  Offense, defense, and special teams all had 3.  There was actually one more, but they were offsetting.  I also, have to mention the one horse collar by Anoma which was a hustling penalty.

Finally, again, players were able to get some players in the game late.  Great experience for these guys who may be needed down the road.  The running game need to improve.  This was the best run stopping front Bama has played, however, there were times against lesser opponents where Bama couldn’t make a 3rd and 1.

                                                                                   Ole Miss vs Bama

First, congrats to the Bama coaches and players on a great victory.  This was a game that was put away in the first quarter.

OFFFENSE:   Bama put together 516 yards of total offense.  There could have been a lot more if Bama hadn’t called off the dogs as they say.  They had 306 passing and 210 rushing.  As far as negative plays, Bama had 6 tackles for losses, 1 sack, 2 fumbles (one lost and one recovered, and an interception. All the negative plays took place in the 2nd half.  There was one in the first half, but it was negated by an Ole Miss penalty.   They had 3 three and outs, and one of those was because of a fumble.  All the 3 and outs took place in the 2nd half. As far as plays that covered 10+ yards, I credit Bama with 11 pass plays and 9 running plays.  Bama got into the red zone 7 times.  When Bama got into the red zone they scored 4 touchdowns and 2 field goals.  On their other trip they missed a field goal.  Bama also scored 3 touchdowns outside the red zone.   Bama longest drive in the game was 13 plays that ended in a field goal.  Seven different players scored touchdowns in the game and 6 of those were different players on the offense.  Three of the touchdown drives were only 3 play drives.  Bama also did a good job running the ball on the edge.

QB:   Tua and Jalen again played well.  Jalen did throw an interception which probably took points off the board.  Tua did miss a couple of throws he usually makes.   Tua completed 73% of his passes while Jalen completed 70%.  Jones was a little less effective.  He did miss an open receiver on his first pass but did make a nice throw for his solo completion.

RB:   The running backs combined averaged 4.57 yards per carry.  They ran well with the first O line but saw things get a little more difficult with the back-ups in the game. I thought they did a good job pass blocking.

Rec:   Six different receivers had catches and half of them had touchdowns.  If my stats are correct Irv Smith had 14 catches last year.  He already has 9 after 3 games.  He is also a threat to run more than a flat route our hook route.  They did throw some key block on the big runs by the rb’s.

OL:  The OL played well.  I thought they blocked pretty well on the edge where there was some of the better runs.  The starters gave up no real negative plays.  Most of the time the QB’s had time to make the throws.  The back-ups were a different story.  They gave up the negative plays for the day.  However, they got some good experience and can learn from their mistakes.  This will be a great teaching film for the back-ups.

Defense:  The defense played well.  OM came into the game averaging 596 yards per game and 407.5 of that was passing.  Bama held them to 248 total yards.  OM had 133 passing and 115 rushing.  The most interesting stat is that at the half, OM had 127 yards passing.  This mean Bama held them to 6 yards passing in the second half.   Also, most of the game they rushed only 4.  I have Bama bringing more than 4 only 7 times in the game.  Bama had more return yardage on their interception than OM threw for in the 2nd half.   As fa as negative plays, I have Bama credited with 6 tackles for losses, 4 sacks, 1 fumble recovery, and 2 interceptions, one which was returned for a touchdown.  OM never got into Bama’s red zone.  Their only touchdown came on the first offensive play of the game on the 75-yard touchdown.  Take that away and their offensive totals look even worse.  As far as 3 and outs, I have Bama credited with 6 three and outs.  They also had a 1 and out because of an interception.  For plays that covered 10+ yards, OM had 4 passes and 3 runs.  Their only score came from outside the red zone.

DL:   I thought they played well.  They were able to pressure the QB with only 4 rushers most of the day.  I thought Q. Williams stood out among the D line.  The only complaint was when a couple of times they lost the edge for the 3rd game in a row.  This is where a couple of the big runs came from.  I also have them for at least 3 tipped balls that ended in incompletions.

LB: The LB’s played well had they had to drop deep in coverage at time and still play the run.

DB:  I thought they played well except for the first play.  On the first play the defensive back made a critical mistake as he focused on the backfield and QB instead of facing the runner to make up the separation when beat.  You just can’t run as fast when you are looking back.  I have at least 2 PBU by Diggs.  Also, as stated above they came up with 2 interceptions and drop what should have been another.  This game they were tested downfield unlike the last couple of game where most of the throws were under 10 yards.

Special Teams:  They missed a field goal which too me looked like a plant foot issue.  I thought it may have been too far from the ball and too far forward.  The kick off coverage was good when the returns did take place, the only decent returns were made because of illegal blocks.  As far as Bama’s kickoff returns, Jacobs again did a good job.

Penalties:  There were some penalties, but they didn’t hurt Bama in the long run.  The bad part is again many were on defense and one gave them a first down.  The worse on was Jacob’s unsportsman like conduct after a touchdown which is assessed on the kickoff.  Fortunately, OM could not set up a return.

Finally, again this game was one where many players got good game experience.  The defense was tested by a vertical passing game.  There was a few missed tackles that needs to be cleaned up as well as losing the edge on the defensive front.

                                                                                   Arkansas St. vs Bama
First, congrats to the Bama coaches and players on a great victory.  Even in the one-sided game you can see there needs to be some improvement.

OFFFENSE:   The offense put together 599 yards of total offense.  They had 321 passing and rushed for 278.  As far as negative plays, Bama had 4 tackles for losses, 1 sack, and 1 fumble which occurred in the red zone.  Bama also had three 3 and outs and 2 of those came late in the 4th quarter.  For plays that covered 10 plus yard, Bama had 13 running plays and 11 passing plays.  Bama got into the red zone 5 times and scored 4 touchdowns.  They fumbled the other trip in.  They scored 3 touchdowns and 1 field goal from outside the red zone.  The other things that stood out to me from the offense is they missed on a third and 1 and even lost a yard.  Either check out of the play or the OL must get a better push.  The other thing that stood out to me is that the QB’s were under pressure several times in the game.  I have Tua getting pressured on 8 of the 19 passes he threw and Jalen getting pressured on 3 of the 9 passes he threw.

QB:   Tua and Jalen both had good games.  Neither did anything to hurt the team.  However, Tua did throw one pass that should have been intercepted.  Both QB’s threw at least one TD when they were pressured.

RB:   N. Harris had a big game averaging over 10 yards a carry.  Other RB’s played well with D.  Harris being the next being the next best statically averaging over 5 yards a carry.  I think N Harris improved on his pass blocking.

Rec:   Six different receivers caught passes, not counting running backs.  JJ had the most receptions; however, he was tied with I Smith a tight-end.  This seems to be an area that is being used more than in the past.  Six of the touchdowns went to receivers which included 5 different players.  Since there were a few longer runs this game I was able to see the receivers doing a pretty good job blocking downfield.

OL:  Even though I think they played better this game, there is still improvement to be made.  You have a third and 1 and you know the snap count and get beat off the ball is not a good thing.  The QB’s were pressured on 11 of the 29 pass attempts.  Fortunately, they only gave up one sack and the QB’s were able to make plays at times.  I do think they can be a very good OL as it did seem they got to the second level on the running plays better this week than they did last week.

Defense:  The defense played pretty well but there were some mistakes, especially missed tackles.  Again, they lost contain and allowed a run for a first down.  They gave up a total 391 yards of total offense, 391 passing and 173 rushing.  As far as negative plays, Bama had 3 tackles for a loss, 2 sacks and an interception that was returned for a touchdown.  This is the 2nd straight game the defense has scored.  They had another opportunity, but the interception attempt was dropped with a wide-open field ahead of him.  Bama had 6 three and outs and one 2 and out as a result of the interception.  Four of the 3 and outs, along with the 2 and out, took place in the 1st half.  Arkansas St. had 7 pass plays that covered 10 plus yards and 6 running plays that covered 10 plus yards.  Many of these came in the 2nd half.  They reached the red zone twice and never scored.  They were stopped on downs once and missed a field goal the other time.  Their touchdown came from right outside the red zone.  One thing that stood out was the pass plays by Arkansas State.  They threw the ball 51 times and I have only 5 of those throws going over 10 yards.  Most of the throws were in the under 10-yard range and the yards were made after the catch.

DL:   They played ok, and I say this because of missed tackles.  They allowed extra yards because of this.  They again lost contain on a play or two that allowed for additional yards.  Buggs only played a half and had a pretty good game.  He was in on 5 tackles and one of the sacks.  It is hard to get much pressure on the QB when the ball is thrown so quickly and short.

LB: They played pretty well.  They had to play sideline to sideline with the short passing game., many of which went to the backs.  Moses had the other sack in the game.

DB:  I thought again they played pretty well.  The main problem I saw was the inside receiver slant that was thrown several times and completed.  I thought they may have played a little too loose on the coverage.  I don’t know what techniques is being taught so it is hard to say for sure.  It seemed this was done away from the LB where it is was hard for help to get there.

Special Teams:  There were a few mistakes in this area.  The fumble on the punt didn’t really hurt since Bama recovered the ball.  The 2 missed extra points are not good and could be important in a close game.  I think Bulovas took over and did a very good job and we may see him for the rest of the year.  Kick off coverage, when they return the ball was good.

Penalties:  Bama had 4 penalties for 35 yards a huge improvement over last week.  I do think they were fortunate on one penalty called on AS since the Bama player went to the face of the AS player on the punt but didn’t get caught.  The pass interference was something that I think could have been a no call as it looked like the receiver went into the defensive player.  N Harris had a holding call on a pass play, however the team overcame that play and scored.

Finally, this is a game that allowed many players to get experience.  Something that is needed for the backups since many of the backups from last year are starting this year.  Bama left points on the field again.  Two missed extra points and another fumble in the red zone.  I do think they improved from the last game and hopefully they will continue to improve.

Louisville vs Bama

First, congrats to the Bama coaches and players on a great victory.  However, as you see there are many mistakes that must be corrected.

OFFFENSE:   The offense put together 519 yards of total offense.  They had 297 passing yards and 222 rushing yards.   These totals could have been more, but Bama lost 2 offensive possessions with the interception return for the touch down and the kickoff return for a touchdown.  As far as negative plays, I have Bama down for 3, 1 tackle for a loss, one sack, and a fumble.  On the tackle for loss, I thought he got back to the original LOS.  I have Bama for on 1 three and out, there was another, but it was a touchdown.  For plays that covered 10+ yards, I have Bama for 12 pass plays and 4 running plays.  Bama got into the red zone 7 times and scored 5 touchdowns, missed a field goal and fumbles after a catch.  They scored 1 touchdown and kicked one field goal from outside the red zone, while 2 touchdowns were scored from special teams and the defense.

QB:   Tua had a pretty good game.  He connected on 75 per cent of his passes.  He found secondary receivers and put the ball where the receiver had a chance to make the play.  Jalen connected on 56 percent of his passes.  I do consider one a drop, however he missed a couple of receivers that were open and underthrew a big ball.

RB:   They ran hard and had a couple of big runs.  They changed backs so often I’m not sure anyone could really get in a rhythm.  They did ok on pass blocking, but D Harris was probably the best.

Rec:   Five different receivers had catches.  Here Bama is extremely talented. I think they blocked ok, there were not a lot of long runs to see how well they blocked.

OL:  I know there were mistakes here.  I saw Leatherwood miss blocks on the sack and maybe a tackle for loss.  Williams also had a mistake.   I say this not knowing the blocking scheme, but it seems they were the ones where the point of attack was broken.  I expected them to get a better push on running game.  I think there needs to be some improvement in this area.

Defense:  The defense played well at times, there are other issues I will address later.  They gave up a total of 268 yards, 16 rushing and 252 passing. 157 came in the second half.  They also got 2 extra possessions with the touchdowns scored by the defense and special teams.  As far as negative plays, I have the defense with 10 tackles for losses, 4 sacks, and 2 interceptions.  For 3 and outs, I have the defense getting 3 with one 4 and out and 1 one and out.  For plays that covered over 10+ yards, Louisville had 11 pass plays and 2 running plays.  Both of the running plays came on scrambles where the defense lost contain and the other was where the pushed too far up the field opening a gap for the QB to escape.  Louisville got into the red zone 3 times, twice the scored a touchdown and once they were stopped on downs.  Here like, the offense there are things that need to be corrected.

DL:   Overall, they played well.  They pretty much shut down the run with 5 or 6 in the box.  I think they need to clean up their stunts.  I know Buggs lost contain, but I don’t know if someone was supposed to come outside since he went inside.  This was 3rd and 8 and allowed them to get a first down.  There were also a couple of occasions where they didn’t bring their feet/run thru the tackle and allowed the player to escape.

LB: They played well, especially with all the coverage and run game responsibilities.  I do think they missed some assignments,  and probably didn’t get the necessary depth to take away some middle throws.

DB:  I thought, as a young group, they played well.  There were some completions, but most of them were in the void in the middle of a 2-safety look.  Most of the completions for gain were thrown short where coverage had been lost or busted.

Special Teams:  This was ok for a first game.  They missed a field goal and an extra point but those seem to be a push and a plant foot problem.  Returns and coverages were good, except for the one late in the game.

Penalties:  Bama had 10 for 111 yards.  Here there were some concerns.  On touchdown drive was made because Bama had 35 yards of penalties on the drive and most came on plays that should have gotten them off the field.  One penalty cost them a touchdown with a block in the back on a return.  Nine of the 11 penalties were on the defense or special team.  I am counting the one of players coming off the sidelines as a special-teams since that is when it happened.  These type penalties loose games when they are close.

Finally, this is a good opening victory.  If you can make this many mistakes and still score this many point and win, it is a plus.

Bama Prepares for New Season

It was a day preceded by a thunderstorm and ended on a sad note with a serious injury. I won't get into the injury status as I don't know how serious the injury was but it's a terrible way to start the season.

The offense didn't take long to get started as Hurts hit a couple of long passes for TDs but the defense had some big moments as well. Those long passes were just two plays that worked but the defense handled themselves well as a whole. Tua had his moments also with some very well placed passes for completions for touchdowns. If there was one bright spot that caught my eye it was the running of Josh Jacobs, it was so good to see him back on the field.

The defense is working hard to find replacements for all of those that didn't return this year and there are some young ones that are putting in a good effort to earn their spot on the team. The season is just getting started and they looked about like I thought they would, there is worked to be done to repeat as National Champions.

If there is a weak spot right now on the team I would say it is the punting game, there is work to be done there but I thought the place kickers did a pretty good job though. I think the punting game will improve in time and we all have to remember that there isn't many J. K. Scotts out there to choose from each year in recruiting. J.K. really spoiled us the past 4 years and it might take a little while to find that quality punter.

Bama won another National Championship last year but it didn't come easy as there were two or three games that the team were very fortunate to win and I think that might be the same case this year as the team may struggle some until the younger inexperienced players mature while the veterans carry the load. Last year the team was terribly hurt with key injuries all season that really hurt the team but this year with the lack of that experience this year this team must not have a repeat of those injuries to repeat as champions. Offensively I think Bama will be better with so many players returning with that much needed maturity. Looking at what was lost on defense the offense will have to carry the load this year for a while. Tua and Hurts are a great combo and there is a stable full of running backs and receivers returning so maybe they can put up some big numbers until experience can be gained by the young defense.

There was good effort with lots of intensity on both sides of the ball today which shows the players have a good mindset toward reaching their goal of another championship in 2019 and with a little luck and some good team leadership from the players, they just might repeat. RTR!!!

I attended the scrimmage today and it felt good to be back in Bryant Denny. It was perfect weather, cold and windy, for the scrimmage and the players reacted to it with lots of energy and a pretty good scrimmage.

All three QBs, Hurts, Tua, and Jones, had some nice plays that included both passing and running. It didn't take Tua long to get the fans excited though as he immediately threw a pass for a TD very similar to the one in the NC game but shorter. I think he had the best day of the three. He didn't see as many reps as Hurts and Jones but he did well when he was on the field. Hurts did well but he still struggles with his timing with the receivers, throwing behind them a little. Jones has added some good weight and had a pretty decent day running and throwing, he looked pretty comfortable on the field.

I was really impressed with the conditioning of the players, especially the defensive players as they are chiseled. There are no big guts on those guys. It was fun to watch when they were working on the red zone offense and defense, some good licks passed on both sides of the ball. It's hard to evaluate how good a team is when there are so many substitutions but I think this team has something good going into the off season. I didn't notice any big time injuries today and that is always good.

The BIG question in everyone's mind has been how will the kicking game be this year after the loss of Scott to graduation. I can honestly say there is no J K Scott on this team but I did see some hope that there might be some improvement in our field goal kicking next season. Joseph Bulovas handled those duties today and he seems to have a decent leg and was consistent. His only miss, I think, was his first attempt and it was about a foot short from about 40 yards out. I'm not sure how many he attempted but I'm sure it was over five and just about all of them were from 35 yards out or better. The other half of the kicking team, punting, didn't impress me so much. I think this might be the weak length in their chain right now. We are all used to seeing Scott boom his kicks 50+ yards and turning the field over for us but I don't see that happening right away. Skyler Delong was handling the punting duties.

Overall, there is a lot of potential in this team and I don't expect any letdown from this past year. There will be some different faces doing the same things that this past year's team did and I expect the same results as last years team, another trip for a Natty. The big key for this team to be successful though will depend on having good leadership and the jury is still out on this.

Many times you don't know something is special until looking back in hindsight days or weeks or years afterwards. Folks, everyone - not just us, but everyone who has an interest in sports - should recognize that we are experiencing the greatest run and dynasty in college football history. 5 national titles in 9 years is just stupid good - almost totally unbelievable in today's era of limited schollies and parity. The closest thing to it is 5 titles in 19 years (also Bama). What is amazing is it could be more - last year was 1 second from Bama having a three-peat this year. Unreal. The thing is, I don't think it's over. Two or three more titles could realistically happen before this run is over.

Enjoy it, my friends. When it's over - and again, it ain't over yet - we will look back in awe and marvel over what has been a wonderful reign in our sport. Roll Tide!

                                                                                                         Georgia vs Bama

First, congrats to the Bama coaches and players on a great comeback victory to give Bama their 17th National Championship.  It wasn’t as clean a game as the Clemson game was, but Bama fought back and won the game.  Also, we must give some props to Kirby Smart and the Georgia coaches and players on a hard-fought game.

OFFFENSE:   The offense had a tough time in the first half and played a very strong 2nd half.  The offense put together 371 yards of total offense.  This included 187 yards passing and 184 rushing which is almost as balanced attack as you can have. The difference in the second half as far as yards are concerned, Bama had 277 yards in the 2nd half as opposed to the 94 yards in the 1st half.  As far as negative plays, I only have Bama giving up 2 sacks, 3 tackles for losses and 1 interception.  I credit with 4 three and outs and one 2 and out because of an interception.  For plays that cover 10 plus yards, I have Bama with 7 pass plays and 6 running plays, most of which came in the second half.  Bama got into the red zone 5 times.  On these 5 trips, Bama scored 2 touchdowns and kicked a field goal.  On the other 2 trips, they missed field goals, 1 which would have won the game without going to overtime.  One of the biggest changes for the offense which led to the victory, besides Tua, was the play of the offensive line.  There a few things I would like to know.  One, why does Bama not have a better short passing game?  Two, why does Bama not use max protect sets on obvious passing downs?  You can use the max protect set and then release if the other team doesn’t send the pressure.  Third, where is the running back screen game?  I do think Daboll is transitioning to the difference from calling a pro game to the college game.

QB:   Hurts did not play well and was under pressure a lot.  He missed a huge pass that would have put Bama on top on the 1st drive of the game. I am not sure if Hurts has lost his confidence or maybe he just is going to be able to develop as the passer we want him to be.  I think he has made strides this year, but not sure he will be the QB of the future.  Tua played well.  He did make a couple of mistakes, but he make up for them on other plays.  I will say he is a better runner than I gave him credit for.  I do notice that Tua is more willing to throw the ball into a tight window more than Jalen is.  I do wonder what happened on the interception.  Every receiver was blocking instead of running a route.  I would assume the play was not communicated as well as it should.  There is something else, that seems to stand out to me and I hope it is not my imagination.  It seems that when Jalen takes the snap he doesn’t seem to drop any deeper, where I notice Tua does drop more when he takes the snap.  I also think Tua was throwing the ball to Harris on the touchdown throw that Ridley came across the end zone and caught.  Later, I heard one of the announcers say the same thing.

RB: They ran hard against a tough physical defense.  As a whole, the running backs averaged 5.8 yards per carry, but this is mainly because of Najee Harris who had 64 yards on 6 carries which averages out to 10.7 yards per carry.  They caught the ball well out of the backfield and the big thing they had no turnovers.  D Harris did miss at least one block on the blitz by the linebacker and thing there was another one missed by Jacobs.  I really don’t remember where the backs were knocked backwards on a tackle except on the swing pass to Bo where the Georgia LB made a great play.

Rec:   The made some very good catches   They got open more in the 2nd half than they did the first half and part of this has to do with the time the quarterback had to throw the ball.   They caught balls that were thrown low that they didn’t catch in the Clemson game.  Smith had one catch during the game and it was a huge one.  The other thing about the receivers is that the ball was spread around, Ridley 4 catches, Ruggs 3 catches, Foster 3 catches, Jeudy 1 catch, Sim 1 catch, and Hentges I catch, and this doesn’t even include the catches by the backs.

OL:   They did not start out very strong but came on in the 2nd half.  I thought Hassenauer had a good game.  In my opinion, he played as well or better than Cotton has been playing.  Also, when Leatherwood came in and played very well.  I do know if he may not have played better than Williams at left tackle.  Speaking of Williams, he missed a cut block and caused pressure on the QB and my main question is why he was cut blocking because he was the only OL using that technique.   I also know the right tackle missed his block on a 3rd and short which stopped a drive.  There was another miss block over there but that is because the UG player timed the snap perfectly and he didn’t have a chance to get out of his stance and get to him.  The was also a pressure from the left side and I think Willams was in which caused Tua to miss the throw on the middle screen which looked to have been set up well for a big play.  Also, on the left side of the OL, I again think it was Williams allowed Tua to be hit on the throw which came up short on an open receiver.

Defense:  This was a tale of two halves.  In the first half Bama missed some tackles and busted some assignments.  What I mean by this is there were opportunities to make stops and they allowed Georgia to get on the edge since the edge player crashed down when that is not his responsibility.  They took some bad angles on the running back especially on the 3rd and 20 where Georgia ran for a first down.  Now, for yards allowed, UG had 361 total yards of offense which included 232 passing and 133 rushing.  What is significant here is that of the 361 yards, 223 were in the first half which means they had 138 in the second half.  What is remarkable about the 138 yards is that 93 of those yards came on the 4-play drive where they threw the 80-yard touchdown.  This happened about the middle of the 3rd quarter which means Bama held them to 75 yards the rest of the game.   As far as negative plays, I have the Bama defense with 4 sacks (2 in each half), 8 tackles for losses (7 in the 2nd half), and 2 interceptions.  For three and outs, I have UG with 4 one of which was and interception.  I also have them with a 1 and out because of an interception.  For plays that covered 10 plus yards, UG had 11 pass plays and 5 running plays.  Georgia got into the red zone twice and scored 1 touchdown and 1 field goal.  The other touchdown and field goal, not counting the one in overtime, was from outside the red zone.  In the 2nd half Bama corrected many of the mistakes from the first half.  I think the first half they were wanting to make a play so badly that they forgot the techniques and assignments.

DL:   Overall, they played well except early when they lost their rushing lanes not giving up the edge.  The UG running backs averaged 3.4 yards per carry and most of it was because of the job the DL did.  Lewis, Payne, Buggs, and Davis all were credited for at least 5 tackles.  They were also the group, and I am including Lewis and Miller in this group, that had 3 of the 4 sacks.

LB: They played extremely well as both inside backers led the team in tackles.  Some of the pass completions were because they were so concerned with the run they didn’t get to drop very deep in the passing lanes.

DB:  They had a huge responsibility in this game.  They made some plays and missed some plays.  One of the best plays made was when Tony Brown got the first interception.  What he did, after he stumbled is what made the play.  Instead of looking back at the quarterback to see what was going on, he sprinted to his receiver and fortunately the quarterback was pressured and couldn’t step into the throw like he would normally.  The bad play by Brown was on the touchdown throw.  He allowed the receiver to get on him before he came out of his backpedal which now means he is beat.  Again, I think Thompson did   a good job filling in for Jones.  It also needs pointing out the hustle by Fitzpatrick on the first play of the game, where he blitzed and went down but got back up to be in on the tackle

Special Teams:  This is where you had good and bad.  The good was the coverage on the kick offs.  Also, good was the punts except for one, but Bama was bailed out because of a block in the back.  The bad was the missed field goals.  This could have kept the game from going into overtime.  Also, fortunately the blocked punt was disallowed because of a penalty which should not have gone Bama’s way.

Penalties:  Bama had 6 penalties for 41 yards.  First you have a false start on the field goal that was made then taken off the board and we all know he missed the next one.  One a 3rd and three Brown steps in the neutral zone and caused the receiver to move giving UG a first down.  Then Bama had a holding on a punt return which took away crucial yards after the punt.  The illegal substation looked to be caused by a lack of effort getting off the field.  Nest you have a roughing the passer which should not have happened and gave UG a 1st and goal.  Finally, the unsportsmanlike like conduct on the kick off return gave UG additional yardage and lucky he was not thrown out of the game.   The angle on tv didn’t show what happened during the play that caused the reaction.

Finally, this was an outstanding job by Bama in the second half.  This was also a game where Saban made a decision to switch quarterbacks, something many coaches wouldn’t have done.  Since, I have mentioned that, I must give props to the way Jalen handled the situation.  Also, by the end of this game, Bama was playing without 5 starters, 6 if you count Jalen.  Hootie Jones, Hamilton, Cotton, and Jennings, were out before the game while Willams went out during the game.   Next year will be very interesting with all the returning players along with who will now play quarterback.
