Some see trouble, others an opportunity. Tornado = Tractor work

Oh you are right there in aub country! I took a job in Lee County way back in 1979 or 80. Lasted 3 months. Couldn't deal with the people any longer.   First night there, (I had rented an apartment), a guy knocked on my door and told me that he was just giving me a friendly heads up but if I didn't want my windshield busted, I needed to remove my Alabama National Championship bumper sticker.

Is Tuscaloosa finally loosing it's claim on being the tornado alley in Alabama? I can remember the days when Meridian, Ms would send us all of those storms up I59/20 and Birmingham would start ducking.

The last year or so, I think the area up around Guin and Hamilton eastward toward Cullman has taken over as the new tornado alley. They have really seen some bad weather lately.

Carbon Hill and walker county get leveled every 2 or 3 years.  Been that way for a while, but you're right, Tuscaloosa gets plenty too.

I used to do a lecture on topography and storm patterns...

HArd to tell, but the line appears to be heading predominantly east, maybe a slight north component.  Looks like it will pass south of birmingham near clanton maybe.

Okay, it's gone from here now (and much cooler).  It's just entering Alabama.

Observations:
1. Not as much cloud-to-ground lightning as storms of last week.
2. High winds and heavy rain.
3. We've had an inch of rain so far, and moderate rain still coming down.
4. Distant rumblings to the west, but the radar shows it's mostly a forward-wall punch to this one.

Good luck to those of you in Alabama.

Srtrong wind and heavy rain hit about 3:00 pm yesterday. We lost power until 1:00 AM today.  Only access to outside world was our cell phones.  Lots of trees down and several store fronts damaged.  With cable still out I'm not sure of the other area damage.  Lightning struck a large maple tree in my daughters front yard, it fell into the power lines but did not damage the house.

Quote
DANGEROUS WEATHER POSSIBLE TODAY/TONIGHT: A number of weather parameters are coming together for the potential for a major outbreak of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes across Alabama and the Deep South during the next 18 hours. A deep, vertically stacked low from the surface to 20,000 feet is south of Kansas City this morning, with a trailing dry line down into the Ark-La-Tex region. The dynamic forcing associated with this system, along with very strong wind fields at the surface and aloft and veering of the wind with altitude will bring severe storms to Alabama later today and tonight.

It rolled through our yard in Arab at 6:30 AM.  Amazing amount of rain in a few minutes, yard's a mess with a number of fairly large limbs down.  The weirdest part is we found about a one foot piece of white vinyl siding in our front yard.  No white vinyl on our house or any of our neighbors.   ???

Will be glad when the last two lines of storms move through and I can settle down.  I HATE STORMS!!!

Ricky, we split our heavy rescue team into diffrent smaller teams. Team one has deployed to Jefferson County. I am on Team Two  ( will prolly be team Captain) and have been told to plan on deploying Sunday morning. Not sure where yet. Not sure if we will be reliving team one, or going somewhere different. I hope we are relieving team one, because: (1) They have the big truck with all of the best equipment and (2) After three straight days up there, they'll prolly need a break anyway.

I still can't reach my father, nor can my sister.  This is highly unusual.  Please pray for us.

Any word Bill?  Want me to drive up there?

Thanks ssmith.  My sister will be heading that way this morning, she finally got gas late last night, but there was a curfew thing going on, complete with a roadblock, preventing her from making the trek.  I have got my truck loaded up with tools, 5-5 gallon gas cans, water and other things incase I have to stirke out at mid-morning.  I feel it's just a cell phone and home phone thing, not being able to reach him.  When I do speak to him, he has some serious 'splainin to do.

WHEWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!  Thank the good Lord above!  My sister just spoke to him and all is well physically.  Just property damage that can be fixed.  Sounds like he couldn't get out of his neighborhood, the power was out, and a cell tower was demolished.

thats great news Bill

I was just going to tell you I talked to a pastors wife at a church up there and she
said you have to have a permit to even get in the area . (cullman)
I'm sure it's like that in other areas too .

Thank God.  Also that is good news regarding supercoach, perhaps he is powerless and towerless and snug as a bug.

Reuben is any of you going to Cullman or B'ham to help out. I also hear over here in Calhoun Co. Ohatchee is devastated. RTR!

My best to you and your guys going in to do some much needed work, doc. Y'all be safe.

Brosky, That is great news. Listen, grounding him for not calling will probably not be effective punishment, since he is already home. Hope this helps.
