Quote
Once again, there's the woefully immature image of stupidity.

Look at Nick Fairley, arrested for the second time in a month and grinning in his mug shot like he sacked Aaron Murray. As if it's a big joke to drive 100 mph, refuse to yield to police, and having an open container with signs of impairment that led to a DUI charge, as Mobile police say happened.

Just like Rolando McClain infamously smiling to a photographer while handcuffed and headed toward a police car Dec. 1 in Decatur. As if it's a game to assault someone and fire a gun by the victim's head.

Jon Solomon is a columnist for The Birmingham News. Join him for live web chats on college sports on Wednesdays at 2 p.m.
Just like Mike Dyer laughing and sighing loudly during breaks while testifying last month. As if it's funny to discuss his consistent drug use that helped get him kicked out of Auburn and acknowledging ex-teammates used his gun in an armed robbery.

You want to shake these guys and scream, "What are you thinking?"

You want to tell these knuckleheads they're going to seriously hurt someone -- maybe themselves, maybe innocent victims.

You want to remind these fools of how many people would love to possess athletic skills that will set them up for life if they don't throw it away.

They're three of the biggest stars during this state's stranglehold on football trophies. They're role models who were glorified on the field.

So let's hold them up on how not to act off the field. Let's use them as role models of how to nip a sense of entitlement in the bud at a far earlier age.
Rolando McClain arrested.

Stop the coddling of the great athlete. Stop the exceptions because the team needs him. Stop the third, fourth and fifth strikes when strikes 1 and 2 go through one ear and out the other....

I truly believe Fairley is a lost cause and Dyer is about one inch from joining him. McClain is on his last rodeo and has to make a major change in his life.

There's a lot of truth that far too many wealthy pro athletes don't leave behind their troubled childhoods. They stay loyal to bad friends.

For some reason these guys think they are above the law, or special.  They are special in the ability they have.  I hate to say this, but sometimes their high school coaches allow them to get away with too much which carries over later in life.  However, what did the parents do to change this behavior in the beginning?

High school coaches aren't the only ones lookng the other way. Try college coaches, police, boosters, fans (us included), and others. When the real world hits these guys (like an arrest, paying bills, or bankruptcy), they respond poorly. In extreme cases, some athletes grow up, like Michael Vick & Ray Lewis.
