Alabama 2012 season preview: Michigan rides 'Hoke-a-mania'

They might be 14-point underdogs, but the Wolverines are riding a legitimate wave of confidence into their season opener against the Crimson Tide. Now, the opposition is always going to say that it thinks it's going to win against a team like Alabama, but you get the sense that Michigan truly believes it will shock the college football world at the Cowboy Classic. And if it doesn't? So what. A win over Notre Dame provides immediate redemption, the Big Ten is wide open, Michigan State has to break in a new quarterback and Ohio State can't make the postseason no matter what. Running back Fitzgerald Toussaint, who notched 1,041 yards as a sophomore last season, eases the pressure off Robinson to make a play on every single down. On defense, the Wolverines bring back three starting linebackers and four starting members of a secondary that was one of the best in the country at stopping the pass.

Hmm, checking that says 16th nationally, 5th in the Big10 against the pass:

  Passing defense: 190.46 ypg (16th, 5th)

So, either the Big10 is filled with lock-down corners and safeties    , or they just don't pass much, as a team only 5th in the conference is 16th in the nation.

They were 39th against the run but their two biggest losses off last years team were-- you guessed it-- defensive linemen.

Keep in mind all these stats came from the Big 10 schedule. Remember, that is the conference where Mich St and Penn St are dominate. Michigan will fold like a cheap lawn chair when CNS turns up the pressure in the 2nd half.

Notre Dame choked like Greg Norman in a major. Meecheegan was very lucky in a few games last year. They will need more than luck in Jerry's house.

ND set a new standard for choking during 2011.  They had several games won, then fumbled away the win at the goal line, suffered from missed assignments, or made poor coaching decisions.
