Title: Black players on Vestavia Basketball team
Post by: ssmith general on March 03, 2011, 04:52:12 AM
Apparently, this is news.  ::)

"Chad Jones has two reasons for wanting his sons to watch the Vestavia Hills boys basketball team this week. He wants them to see how a team with a losing record -- 15-17 overall -- has made an unexpected playoff run to the AHSAA Class 6A semifinals at the BJCC.

He also wants them to see the demographics of this year's Rebels.

Four of the five starting players are black, as are six of the top eight players. The 12-man varsity has seven black players in all."

News?  Maybe I'm missing it, but black players were stars on hs bb teams with Rebel mascots when I was in high school (1960s).  Was that the point of the story?  Alabama doesn't need any racial pot stirring.

Exactly, it's the dumbest thing I read in a while.

I am originally from Homewood, right next to vestavia and that area is predominantly white, but it's 2011 and it shouldnt be a story that some black kids made the basketball team.

Ummm, that is a thought I missed. It is news even if hinted at of course. Thanks for the reminder. RTR!
