The Crimson Tide will hire former NBA coach of the year Avery Johnson to replace Anthony Grant. Johnson agreed in principle to be Alabama's next basketball coach, ESPN reported Sunday afternoon. The contract details are still being finalized.

Johnson has never coached college basketball, but brings a high-profile personality to the program.

After Wichita State's Gregg Marshall turned down Alabama's offer April 1, some familiar names were floated. But Battle went a different, less-conventional route with the 2006 NBA coach of the year.

Johnson, 50, brings a big personality, an NBA championship ring from his playing days and early success in the coaching business. The fastest to 50, then 100 wins in NBA history, Johnson took the Mavericks to the Finals in his first full season at the helm.

I like it. The more I learn about CAJ the more I like him. Looking forward to seeing who he brings on board as assistants.

Running our football program like an NFL team has worked out pretty good. I am excited about bringing in a coach with NBA experience. Former Bama players are all over social media in support of CAJ. I think this is a very good hire.

Does Avery realize "it's Prohm"?

Cecil is also reporting that Avery's the Man although financial details are still to be worked out. (That's a pretty big detail!)

What I expect to see:

A guard-oriented offense with a fast paced offense & tight defense. Passing & assists will replace excessive dribbling, hesitant shooting, and 1-on 3 attempts at scoring. Hustle, movement, and energy will be required. Coordinated team play will be prevalent & the basics a must. Basics like setting picks, blocking out on rebounds, team defense, FT shooting, passing, understanding passing lanes, etc. I hope I'm right.

Recruiting should not be that hard because with his pro experience they should want to come learn the ins and outs from a coach like Avery. RTR!

I'm hopeful, but a little skeptical.  I'd rather have seen us hire someone with proven success at the college level.

EXACTLY!!! So many questions & situations. Recruiting, which current players will stay, does he go the JUCO route, what will the offense & defense look like, can players be developed, who will he schedule to play, & so much more. I'm excited but a bit subdued at the same time.

 Huh? Huh? Huh?

I'm pleased.  While he hasn't won at the college level, he's certainly proven he can coach.  He's a well-known name with all kinds of NBA connections.

We could have done much worse.  I'm excited to see what develops.

Battle certainly has swung for the fence.  Let's hope this is a Home Run.

Until proven otherwise, I'll maintain that we whiffed on Rich Rod and ended up with Saban, once again.

Finebaum take on Johnson hiring.

Quote
Two of the primary question marks surrounding Johnson are that he has never coached in college and that he has been out of coaching for more than two years.

"One of the only knocks on him is he hasn't coached in three years," Finebaum said. "Anthony Grant hasn't really coached much in the last three years either."

Mal told us the story of the recruitment of Rich Rod  at a REC meeting and Bama did not whiff on that deal. I have read where other folks say the same thing. Mal went to New York for a meeting with Rich Rod's agent and they discussed the possible hiring of Rich Rod and when the meeting was ovewr Mal asked his agent to not say a word to anyone about their discussion and the agent agreed. Mal said he went back to his hotel later and turned on the tv, I think he said ESPN, when he arrived and they were boadly broadcasting that Bama would be hiring Rich Rod. Mal said he was so mad that he never met with Rich Rod's agent again, the deal was over and Bama moved on.
