May have had a Taurus Judge. I’ve got one with.45 snake shot I carry when I’m out in the woods. Takes care of Diamondbacks. . My fisherman friends have them in their boats in case they come across a cottonmouth. I does the job.
He must of accidentally cocked the hammer is the only thing I can think of as to how he shot himself.
Now that's something to consider.  Last time I was attacked by cottonmouths, I was up a creek in a canoe.  Considering there were three cottonmouths charging my canoe, that creek could aptly be named sh** creek.  Fortunately, I did have a paddle.

They are the most aggressive little buggers that you'll find around these parts for sure.

I personally have used a variety of weapons to kill rattlers around the Nalt homestead.  First one I killed I crushed it's head with a 2X4 stud.  This was while I was building our house and Mrs. Nalt managed to stop her car with the driver-side front tire on the snake's back.  I think the second one I killed was with my riding mower.  I was mowing a trail out into the woods toward a beautiful waterfall.  On my way back out I noticed it lying in the path that I had just mowed.  It's head was missing.  All the others lost their lives by sudden, high velocity, traumatic lead poisoning... crazy how that happens...  Cool

You've got a waterfall on your property, Pappy?  I always knew you were sitting on a pile of money.

It really isn't ON my property but it is on the lot next door and the run-off runs across my property.  During some of the more severe storms over the last 18  years it has washed my driveway out numerous times.  The last time was the night of Christmas eve two or three years ago.  I spent Christmas day working on it with a friend's tractor trying to make it passable...

Happy to say I've never killed a snake on my property.  And I won't.  We have 5 acres of yard and woods with trails.
I carry a gun, but not for snakes.  My neighbors are more venomous than most of the snakes!!

BTW, I've been to shooting ranges to participate in competitions.  Most of the folks there, including policemen, can't consistently hit a target with a pistol.  I doubt they'd hit a snake with 6-8 shots!

Shotgun?  Different story.

Do their pistols have the little green dot?  Thinking

True story.  A policeman from a small Mississippi town fired his pistol at a 15m target during the competition.  One of the last shots hit the supports for the target, and the target collapsed.  Nothing else even hit the target.  We laughed, and he countered, "I'm a better shot in the dark."

Easier to see the little green dot I suppose.

Yeah. Those critters are nasty and ill-tempered. If you fish around here, it's a really good idea to have a weapon in the boat. You can always tell them from the water snakes as cottonmouths seem to glide on top of the water whereas water snakes swim somewhat submerged.

I managed to drive them off with the paddle -- smacked all three on the head.  Then promptly left before they recovered their ill temper.

And yes, they were gliding on top of the water.  But they were attacking my boat, what else would they be.
