TUSCALOOSA -- A defensive lineman by trade, Alabama's Brandon Lewis did some moonlighting on offense Saturday at Penn State.

The junior who played two seasons at East Mississippi Community College found himself in the backfield blocking in short-yardage situations.

Coach Nick Saban said he needed another big-bodied player capable of filling the H-back/fullback/tight end position.

"Brandon Lewis was a guy that we thought that athletically and maturity-wise could contribute somewhere else on the team better than he was as a defensive lineman," Saban said. "Even though he's done a good job, we felt like, 'OK, here's the guys we have, where's this guy going to play?'"

At 6-3, 288 pounds, Lewis is plenty to handle for any defensive player getting in his way.

Defensive end Damion Square laughs when he says he looks at Lewis differently now.

"Brandon Lewis is one of the other guys now," Square said. "He's still my boy, but out there in practice, we have to go hard on him."
