hurricane as it moves towards the area.

2. Life threatening storm surge along portions of the Florida
panhandle and big bend coastlines, widespread power outages from
strong winds, and localized flash flooding are all possible.

3. Preparations should be rushed to completion.

Details...

A potentially catastrophic event is developing. Michael has been
upgraded to a hurricane and is forecast to continue to strengthen as
it moves toward the northern Gulf coast, reaching major hurricane
status Tuesday evening before landfall. With landfall expected along
the Florida Panhandle or Big Bend coast Wednesday, significant
impacts are expected across the area with impacts beginning late
Tuesday to early Wednesday. These will include the possibility of
life-threatening storm surge, widespread power outages, downed trees
blocking access to roads and endangering individuals, structural
damage to homes and businesses, isolated flash flooding and the
potential for a few tornadoes. The main change with this forecast
package is that Michael is stronger and slightly slower than the
previous forecast, increasing our threat for higher winds and wind
gusts as well as storm surge.


.LONG TERM [Thursday Through Monday]...

Michael should be exiting the CWA by the start of the long term,
or shortly thereafter - there are still some differences timing
wise with guidance. Behind the storm, high pressure will build in
and will finally see highs in the low to upper 80s with lows in
the upper 50s to mid 60s. Once Michael exists the CWA, PoPs remain
limited through the long term.

I chatted with a friend today who has a house at St Joseph's Bay (right on the water).  He's got his house boarded up, and it's on pilings, but it's surrounded by big pines...  not good.
He had an offer on the house earlier this year, and almost accepted.  But he loves being there, so he passed on the sale.

Weather Channel has live broadcasts from Apalachicola FL.  There were 2 otters in the street.  The river has risen to cover the downtown area, and the worst flooding is yet to come.

Early report:

Mexico Beach had most devastating damage.   :(

Officially 155 mph winds sustained.  That's just NUTS.
The entire area will be buried under downed trees and debris.
A sailboat broke free and floated past the reporter in Apalachicola, and the Sopchoppy gorilla (a famous landmark you've seen if you visited there) is down.

A downed tree limb broke through a window and hit a woman in the head in Franklin County, Florida, the county’s sheriff said.

Sheriff AJ Smith told CNN authorities received a 911 call about the injury, but ambulances had evacuated and were not able to respond. Officials in multiple jurisdictions had previously warned that emergency services would be unavailable at the height of the storm.

“We had no EMS to go treat her,” Smith said. “City police did the best they could.”

The woman’s condition was not clear.

First reports Thursday morning are that at least 2 were killed by the storm.

Jim Cantore still reporting from Panama City this morning (Thursday).  He says their satellite truck can't get any farther east to the worst hit areas, because Hwy 98 is blocked by downed trees and power lines.

Can you imagine Hwy 98?  It was lined with huge pines, and likely that many of them are now across the road.  Could take a week just to clear the road in that stretch.

Any loss of life is sad and unfortunate, but frankly, I expected it to be many more.

The videos and photos I am seeing are astonishing. It doesn't look like there is much left of Mexico Beach. And I can't even recognize some pacles I used to go to as a kid in PC. I haven't heard much about the Alabama end of this (obviously, due to the destruction in FLA), but anyone know what the damage is like in the Dothan area?

Yeah.  He was in Dothan, and was driving down to CSB today.  Doubt he made it, but he was trying.

Said his neighbor called.  Lots of damage, but no specifics about whether his house survived.  His house is 8' above the ground, and the neighbor said the surge was 6' there.  So many trees across the road and driveway that his neighbor couldn't go anywhere yet or see the houses on either side.

6 deaths and counting.  God knows how high the toll will be.

Marianna, Fl is about 50-60 miles inland. Downtown was destroyed.

A hurricane can do a lot of damage that is why when they get a warning they should leave no matter if the weather people are right or not. JMPO. RTR!

My buddy, whose house is in San Blas (along the road to it), showed me pics of his house this morning.  They were all aerial pics, but it appears that his house is okay.  At least the roof is intact.  Hard to tell much more. 

He wasn't allowed to go see for himself, but his neighbor's house was rented and the renters said my friend's house was still standing.

I know a fella that retired to a house on the beach in Port St. Joe a little over a year ago.  We got in touch with him yesterday, and he and his wife went to Destin (probably should've gone farther).  He has no idea about the condition of his house, and of course it will be several days before they can drive back.

You can tell him that the Troopers told my buddy the road to San Blas was closed until Oct 20th.  Not sure if that's official.

I heard from my BIL in Virginia (between Richmond and Charlottesville).  They had 6" of rain LAST NIGHT.  Lots of flooding there.

Reports say we had 6+ inches here yesterday. The I-85/I-385 interchange was under water yesterday. Lots of local flooding, but everything is pretty much back to normal today.

Glad to here your buddy's house is ok, Chech, even though it may be quite some time before they can get back to see it.

He's really worried about mildew.  He bought storm shutters for it, and his neighbor closed them for him before the storm.  But he doesn't know how much water got inside, etc.

That's the unavoidable thing about hurricanes; water is likely to get in, and if so, mildew is inevitable. In his situation especially, because his area is not accessible for the air mover people to get in and start the process.

Here's the story on SEARCH and RESCUE:

I was watching Weather Channel today.  They said the FEMA S&R guys have finished in Mexico Beach, working every house and using dogs in the rubble.  They didn't talk to reporters, but reporters said after that the storm surge receded suddenly, carrying some debris out with it.  Speculation was that bodies were carried out too.  

Reporters said there are only a few cases where they know people were in houses that were destroyed, and those people haven't been found.  Possible they left during the storm and made it to safe houses, but it's unknown.

S&R has moved east to Port St Joe today.

Everybody please hear me. This is one reason you had better know where your going when death hits cause none of those people woke up saying well I am going to die today. Just my love to you all. RTR!

True. When I was with the LCSD in Tennessee, we had to check on a man who had not been heard from in a few days. We went to his mobile home with no AC in the middle of the summer. He was dead in his bed and had been for days. You can imagine the smell. Something I will never forget.

"Namaste here". I quit "Namaste-ing" when Ivan hit. People need to learn that these major hurricanes are no joke. This is such a sad situation.

On Saturday [YESTERDAY], rescue crews heard cries for help and crowbarred into a mobile home crumpled by the storm in Panama City, freeing a mother and daughter, both diabetics who had been trapped in a closet without insulin for two days and were on the verge of diabetic shock, rescuers said.

When Ivan hit, a guy who worked for me and was also a good friend said he was going to stay in his mobile home. I drove to his trailer and forced him to come stay with us. An oak tree split his mobile home in two. He easily could have been killed.
