Peewee from Grand Bay becomes Nick Saban's radio show call-in favorite, offensive line advocate
(http://media.al.com/alabamafootball_impact/photo/peeweealdotcomjpg-62f0282229cf5cba.jpg)Peewee Roberts has been calling the weekly "Hey Coach" radio show since the early 1990s. He's grown into a statewide celebrity for always getting the first call.

This 55-year old Alabama fanatic is soft spoken. His fall evenings sometimes include umpiring 4- and 5-year-old baseball games. Before heading to the ballpark, he works at an equipment rental company as an environmental, health and safety coordinator.

By Thursday evening, he becomes Peewee from Grand Bay — the most prolific caller to the weekly "Hey Coach" radio show in its history.

Peewee said he's been calling for three decades now, spanning the Gene Stallings era straight through Nick Saban's title run.

Here is a rare, feel-good story for us.  Nice read, heartwarming.
We need to recruit Peewee for the forum.  I have close friends in Grand Bay; talked with one last night.  I'm going to find this guy!

Good read. Thanks, Chech. Sounds like he would fit in very well here at CRS.

Not to speak for him, but let me interject:

When I lived on Dauphin Island, we called everyone north of I-10 "Yankees".   :lol2:

Before it was destroyed by I think Ivan, it was a GREAT place to stay. Loved to eat at Gilligans and another place whose name I can not remember. Did you have a place on the beach? We stayed at different places named Louisiana Purchase, West End, Dixie Delight, etc.

yes Chech , I'd love to talk sometime !

MD , Mobile is a good ways north from where Chech and I speak of ,
25-30 miles I believe
I lived just north of the Island , as the crow flies not far from the
GOM at all ...
just north of the "west end" and the "Mississippi Sound"
when the wind is out of the south you can feel the salt water in your nose  :lol2:

great place if I say so myself , Dauphin Island is my 2nd home I guess
I stay there so much it should be my 1st ...

gas prices , empty nest , down sizing the crib , less lawn'yard work
hurricane damage , 2 missing roofs and the *wife said* we're moving
means ....
it wasn't hard to talk me into moving north or a 15-20 minute drive to
get back there to where my fishing and friends are , so we moved up to
the Dawes area .
or as Chech called it , yankee land ...( and it is LoL )

we always have said ...
Dauphin Island , a little drinking village with a fishing problem  :lol2:
they'll still let hang out if you don't drink , they do me anyway

if I remember right ...
I think the last time I hung out with Peewee we talked about
the internet and such ...
we were doing a live radio remote and spent several hours there talking
and if I recall right he told me he doesn't do the internet to much
I'll find out ...
if he does great , we can invite him !

or even maybe we could put Eli up to it   :lol2:

Maybe he doesn't do the internet much because he hasn't found this pacle.  :dunno:

We are nothing like your typical sports forum.

We may create a monster!  If so, it's on X.  :lol2:

MD, I lived in "the village" on DI, not the beach.  It was the 70s, back when it was still a small pacle and we all served on the sheriff squad and fire/rescue.

P.S.  There is still time to enter our weekly pick 'em contest for this week:  http://www.crimsonredsports.com/index.php?action=pickem;sa=enterpicks;contest=3;round=11  Merk won with an excellent score of 8-2 last week, but in past weeks people have made the leaderboard with 5-5.  It has been a tough year for picks this time with a lot of chaos.

Hannibal, part one of my question will be about Ryan Kelly & Chad Lindsey and what kind of rotation will we see with them. Not sure on my second part yet.

PeeWee, what is your take on that situation. Kelly really seemed to be floundering when Lindsay replaced him after Kelly was dinged up. When Kelly returned, it appeared he started playing much better. Seems to me that competition is a good thing, particularly with them. What say you?

Stater Chad Lindsey came in for Ryan and played very very well. Then against Tenn. when Ryan came back in he also looked good. So I would say let Chad start againg and play Ryan in the first half. Then go with who ever is doing to best for the 2nd half. Your thoughts?

Welcome Peewee.

When Kelly got hurt and Lindsey came in I thought our OL improved immediately and has been getting better each game since. I was surprised to see Kelly in the game so much against UT. I have heard CNS say a player does not lose his spot due to injury. I think they are in a battle to see who wins the starting spot right now. We can win with either of them but I like Lindsey.

Hey Peewee, long time listener, first time caller Welcome to CRS.  Couple of questions I would like to have asked regards next year's qb situation.  I know that A.J. is the man this year as it should be.  However, does CNS plan on Blake Sims being the #1 guy or will he open up the competition to some of the younger kids?  If he does open it up, does he foresee giving some of the younger kids some actual game experience this year at all or let them fight it out in Spring practice and Fall camp?

N.AL-Tider, CNS stated on his Radio Show two weeks ago when asked about the QB situation if Blake was the "Heir Apparent" his response was NO, not at all. I think the position will be wide open and who ever shows that they can handle the offense as it is by making the right reads and putting them in the right plays will get the nod. So I would say it totally up in the air and open to all comers. May the best man win.

We open next year with WV in the Georgia Dome.
I'll be surprised if Blake Sims isn't the starter (unless we get a transfer QB).

Chem, this is JMO Blake has made improvement in his passing game, but unless he makes more I just do not see him being the starter. Jake Del Rio has made vast improvement this year. I kind of have him as my favorite going into Spring Training.

You should have a QUOTE button to clink in the upper right hand of the post you want to respond to. Clink it and it will open a response window. Make sure you respond below the original post. You want want to clink preview before you post to make sure the quote is gray and your new comment is white. HTH

I think Del Rio is in the same situation AJ was 5 years ago. Del Rio is the back up if AJ goes down but they do not want to use his redshirt in mop up duty so Blake Sims gets those reps. Sims is a good athlete but he has not impressed me enough to think he has a shot at starting next year.

He hasn't impressed me either.  But he has improved.  He was turrible during the spring game.
My suggestion was that he'd start against WV, but others would play too.  By game 2-3 the new QB would take over.

Hey Peewee, welcome to the forum.  That's what I've been hearing too, Del Rio a favorite for what will be fierce QB competition in the Spring.

Thanks Peewee.  I don't get to listen to his radio show so I obviously missed that.  I just can't help but think that Del Rio will be starting "behind the 8-ball" in the spring to try and unseat Sims.  I guess that is what Spring ball and fall camp are for though, huh?  I have been impressed with Sims this year when he was in the game.  Hopefully the competition for starter next year will be a good one to watch... it was when he was battling A.J....
