Title: "Nick Saban talks Tennessee, Butch Jones, Alabama defense"

— On Alabama’s number of penalties: “I think it’s lack of discipline. I talk to our team about that all the time. ... Discipline is not something you get when you get on the field. You get it when you wake up in the morning. Am I making the right choices and decisions? And you carry it on the field that way. ...”

— On the top two scoring offenses in the country being SEC teams: “I think it shows that coaches — and I think LSU has done this, if that’s who you’re speaking about — have done a great job of featuring the talent they have relative to the offensive system that they run, which we’ve kind of had to change how we do things here relative to the players that we have. It starts always with the quarterback. I think when you do that, you’re going to have the opportunity for more explosive plays, but that’s the kind of players you got, too. I think every team in the league is different. You can talk about the SEC all you want, but when Spurrier was at Florida, which was the same years you’re talking about, they had the very explosive teams and threw the ball great, had some great skill players. And so did Tennessee years ago. I think that’s not really a fair judgement of the history of the league.”

— On his freshmen on defense: “I think these guys have all made progress. I think they’ve got more confident in what they’re supposed to do. I think the biggest challenge for them is the different things they see week in and week out, trying to make the adjustments. I think when you have a good understanding of the basics, you’re able to make adjustments to that, which has been the challenge for us with these young players. ...”

— On the Crimson Tide running game: “We just want to have balance. I think our quarterback doesn’t take off and run a lot. Our statistics ... Basically our 170 yards rushing are running plays. As long as we have balance and we have the ability to run the ball, we want to feature what our players can do best.”

— On Butch Jones’ role: “Most of the stuff is behind the scenes — film study, doing administrative type work. He always does: What do we need to do on offense for me and his opinion in terms of improving based on film study and things like that. ...”

...

— On whether fitting gaps is one of the top issues on defense: “I think it’s a combination of things. Players have to be very disciplined in understanding the overall scheme of where they fit and if everybody does their job they’re going to have a chance to be successful against the plays that we see. ...”

CNS is very supportive of the young players on defense.  Sounds like both OM and A&M took advantage of their youth, knowing they'd studied films closely, and running different plays off the sets they'd studied on films.  That definitely hurt us on the first drive; plus the motion caused missed assignments.

I was worried when Saban started his explanation of penalties starting when the players get up in the morning.  Most of mine came more about bedtime.

As did most of us at that age.

My penalties came when I usually tried to drive the QB down and rip his facemask off. RTR!

Jalen Hurts has better stats at OK than Baker Mayfield or Kyler Murray had after the same number of games.  Funny how suddenly the "experts" are saying it is the system.

But if that's true, then Tua should be the Heisman front runner, considering what he's done at a non-system school.

I think Jalen HURT his chances at the Heisman against Texas.  Okie doesn't have a lot of big games this year, and Jalen likely blew his big chance by having an off day (for him).

I don't know...I think he would be better off having an off day early-to-mid season than at or towards the end of the season like Tua did last year.  IMO, that is what cost him the trophy...

In the last two games Bama's defense has given up 59 points. In Bryant's 1961 season his team gave up 25 points all year (11 games).  Times do change!

Great photo of a happy kid, Chech. Only you can turn football statistics into a fish story.    :D
