Title: Best game you saw live
Post by: ssmith general on March 07, 2011, 08:09:33 AM
For me it's gotta be that 2003 (maybe 2004) triple overtime UTk game.  I know we lost, but that was epic in the stadium.  I was drinking back then and got ejected twice, the first time was early so I bought another ticket, the second time was in OT, so I just walked back in another gate.

I was at the Auburn game in 85 when Tiffin kicked the 53 yard field goal with no time left on the clock for the win. The game had gone back and forth and either team could have won. Back then the game was in B'ham and the crowd was split 50/50. I have never seen anything like it.

I do not remember the year (86 I think) but Perkins was the coach and Shula was QB. Me and a friend went to New Orleans for a night on the town on Friday and drove to Baton Rouge Saturday for the game. It was a good game that ended in a 14-14 tie. I still cannot believe Perkins did not go for 2 Points when we scored at the end of the game. That is my only trip to Tiger Statium and I will never forget it.

My wife and brother are barner fans. We watched this game at my mother's who was a Bama fan. My wife and brother thought they had the game won and were rubbing my nose in it. Plus I had $50 on the game with my barner boss. When Tiffin made the kick, Mom and I were jumping up & down, hugging each other. We turned around and my wife and brother were gone. I walked outside and they were walking in opposite directions down the street, fuming. Best game ever, IMO. I still haz the warm fuzzy just thinking about it.

Best one of the several I can think of was the IB in 1973. When Johnny Musso dove from the 5 yd. line and went past an Auburn defender and landed in the endzone. I have never seen anything like it before and I don't think I have since. We won. RTR!

all of these are awesome no doubt

but after the drought we went through since 1992
for my own personal reasons I will have to go with Rocky Block
to me , it paved  the way to the championship
plus shaking TC's hand (left one) before the game I claim mojo on it
we should have never been in that position to begin with , I know
but Dear Sweet Baby Jesus that was awesome

Haven't seen a lot of "the great ones" live but I was at the NC game in Pasadena so that's mine, simply because we were back on top where we belong!

For me, it's a tossup.  I have 2 favorites:

1.  1969.  Alabama 33 - Ole Miss 32.
"In one of the greatest games in college football history, Alabama out-dueled Ole Miss 33-32 at Birmingham's Legion Field and a national TV (ABC) audience. Alabama's Scott Hunter led the Crimson Tide to a thrilling one-point win over Ole Miss junior Archie Manning. Hunter completed 22 of 29 passes for 300 yards, including the game-winning 14-yard TD pass to Meridian, Miss., native George Ranager with 3:42 left in the game. Manning was less than disappointing in defeat, completing 33 of 52 passes for a then school-record 436 yards in the loss. The 33 completions, 436 passing yards and 609 yards of total offense all stood as records against the Alabama defense."

2.  1971.  Alabama 31 - Aubs 7.
"Both teams were playing for a shot at the national championship against Nebraska in the Orange Bowl. 10–0 Alabama (#4 AP) routed 9–0 Auburn (#5 AP), and newly crowned Heisman winner Pat Sullivan, 31–7.  The Italian Stallion, Johnny Musso (22) whacked the Auburn defense for 167 yards and two touchdowns. In three Iron Bowls, the halfback ran for 467 total rushing yards, leaving him only ten yards shy of the series record."

Johnny Musso was/is my hero. I never got to see him play live, but he filled my obsession as a kid.
Most thrilling live game was Rocky Block. It was destined.

Then Johnny Rogers and Jerry Tagge sucked the wind out of me.
We appeared shocked and unprepared compared to Nebraska that day.

I was at the BCSNCG in Pasadena.  That was my favorite game experience, hands-down.
The 36-0 drubbing we put on the barn to end their streak in 2008 was quite enjoyable.
The 1994 comeback win against Georgia in the night game at BDS was one of the most exciting atmospheres I ever remember at BDS.
A bittersweet game was in 2005 vs. Florida.  Some of our Florida friends were with us, so that made it even more fun; but, I've never heard a stadium as quiet as BDS was when Prothro went down.

No question it was the '96 Iron Bowl for me. I was a junior that year and we were packed into the student section at Legion Field. We drove down the field for the winning score, and that place went insane. I remember the play before we were in the corner and my friend and I thought we had scored then and started celebrating. It was really on the next play when Kitchens hit Riddle for the go ahead score that got the party started. We were hugging people we didn't even know.

One of my fondest memories was in 1973, I believe. It was a double header at Legion field. Alabama, with Richard Todd at QB, completely dismantled California 66-0. The other game was Auburn and Oregon State. My buddy and I hid in the bathroom between games so that we could catch both games. I think Auburn won also. That day was a lot of fun.

I was there for that one too.  Yes, it was Todd at QB.  Did you know he stuttered?  I tutored him when I was in grad school; when he stuttered during games, Sylvester Croom (center) called the plays.

Just to bump this, one of my favorite games was the Alabama vs Ole Miss game in Oxford, 1993.
Palmer played like a Heisman winner that day, playing QB as if he were returning punts.  He ran wild and led Alabama to victory.  Fun game.

Could you see the field goal go through the posts in Knoxville?  Worse rain storm ever.  Then UT got a plastic field (Astroturf?) the next year.

One of the funniest experiences I've had at a live game was the '75 or '76 IB. I think we beat the barners something like 38-7. My !st wife and I were walking through the parking lot after the game and some dutchbag barner ran up behind me and snatched my Bama hat off my head. I chased him and when he looked back towards me, ha ran into a parked car and hurt his knee. I slowly walked up to him, took my hat and said "Dude, you don't deserve this hat." And walked away as he was writhing on the ground. That moment was priceless. BTW Ozzie was spectacular in that game.

The Va Tech game in Atlanta in 2009 was great. We did not know it at the time but it was the beginning of the championship season. The game itself was awesome. My first game in a dome. The crowd was fantastic. I read later by several sports writers that the game had the feel of a BCS bowl game.
