HURT: Tide has to hit a moving target

This is about the NCAA Tournament selection process, but it isn't about any one school in particular.  I don't think the University of Alabama was the last team out of the field, if I had to guess. So it's not about that.

I don't think UAB was entirely 'exposed' by Tuesday night's demolition at the hands of Clemson, although the Blazers gave a bad account of themselves. Lamar blew a very good Alabama team out of the 1983 tournament in a first-round game. It can happen. So this is not about the Blazers, either. It's about hitting the moving target in the future.

That's what Anthony Grant has to do. The cool, calm Grant, who almost never displays any frustration in his comments to the press, called the NCAA selection process 'a bit of a moving target' when asked about it Sunday night. It is Grant's job - and, despite some far-fetched reports about other job opening, I think it will be Grant's job for some time to come - to get Alabama into the NCAA Tournament. He did a wonderful job of putting Alabama in that position on the court this season. At some point after Alabama's NIT run ends, Grant is going to have to sit down and see if he could have done anything differently off the court to help his team earn a spot in the 68-team field.

Re: Carolina Panthers Will Hold Pick, Select Cam Number One-Link

It is easy to see the potential upside of Cam until you peel away the layers. You don't have to pull too many layers off until you are left with a basically unapologetic thief who continues to be deceitful and guarded with the "full" truth about his past activities, so obviously character issues become a concern.

Every action he takes gives me the impression that his ego could be a cancer to team chemistry as (like the above said) he is not willing to take responsibility for his own actions, so his problems become the teams problems while his successes will be HIS successes.

Then, you can't look past the fact that he is simply inexperienced as a QB. He has one year as a starter facing real competition and reading more evolved defenses (which he didn't really do as the plays were pre-called and audibled from the sideline). His only experience in making his own reads came on the zone read where he looked for simple keys to make quick decisions. The majority of the season he managed to turn scripted plays into busts that he depended on his athleticism to ad lib his way to a positive gain which won't work many times against a Pro defense.

Also, his adjustment to playing under center will take him out of his comfort zone and obviously effected his accuracy based off of his combine performance.

He is a very talented football player, but I think he is a HUGE gamble as a QB. Much more so than Tim Tebow as he doesn't bring the morals and work ethic along with him.

I think with his speed and measurables, he could be an outstanding H-back in the right offense that features one. He also provides a good option for pro teams that like to inter-mix the wildcat into their playcalling as it puts him back in his comfort zone and makes use of his talents. But, he has a long way to go and a lot of work ahead of him to become a consistently successful QB at the next level.

There have been some successful rookies in recent years, but that is by far the exception to the rule.  Picking a spread QB with only one year as a starter against D1 defenses is a gamble for many reasons.

Had Andrew Luck decided to come out, I think the Panthers would have considered using their draft choice on him, but the remainder of the draft QB class is not worthy of a #1 pick (IMO). I think Cam is a boom or bust type of player at QB. Not that they have much to lose, but IMO it is too big a risk for the Panthers to take Cam #1 overall.

Plus taking another new QB doesn't help them at the position which is already full of inexperience with Clausen and Pike having only one NFL year under their belts. Matt Moore was supposed to be the starter last year but early poor play and injury opened the door for Clausen to be baptized by fire. I could see a trade in the future to bring in a veteran QB to give Calusen and/or Pike adequate time to learn the NFL game before they would gamble on another unproven QB with a top pick.

I really see them looking for a dominant DT (Fairley or MD) or DE (Bowers) first. Coach Rivera is a 3-4 guy, but has stated that Carolina will stay in a 4-3 base due to its current personnel. To me, that doesn't rule out the change in the future once the right personnel are acquired. Dareus obviously fits the bill for that future once they can find that elusive 3-4 nose tackle to make it all work.

Alabama spring football practice is an opportunity for early enrollees

TUSCALOOSA -- While much of the attention in Alabama's spring football practices will focus on the highly anticipated quarterback battle, plenty of newcomers are ready to earn significant playing time, perhaps even starting jobs, beginning Monday.

Here are the five newcomers who will try to make a move this spring:

1. Aaron Douglas. The former Tennessee freshman All-American offensive lineman returns to the SEC after a junior college All-American season at Arizona Western College. Alabama hopes he can compete for, if not win, the left tackle spot vacated by two-year starter James Carpenter. The 6-foot-6, 280-pound Douglas recently pleaded guilty to DUI and was sentenced to 48 hours of jail before being required to complete more than 11 months of supervised probation.

Marcell Dareus may had a hard time registering quarterback sacks this past season and the other ends were not that great with sacks either and all were inconsistent with the running game.

With Dareus now gone, that leaves a lot a question marks as to who will be the starters, but the depth at the position is phenomenal. The defensive end position has 12 solid scholarship players who were heavily recruited and could have gone to almost any school.

For the University of Alabama basketball team, the main fear Tuesday night was either complacency or distraction. The Crimson Tide didn't suffer from either one, overwhelming an undermanned Coastal Carolina team 68-44 to win in the opening round of the NIT. Next, Alabama will face New Mexico in Tuscaloosa at a time and day to be announced.

Florida Looks to Bounce Back Under Muschamp

Florida won the national title in 2008 and was a win away from getting a chance to defend that title in '09. In 2010, though, the bottom fell out.

Well, the Gators went 8-5 -- not necessarily bottoming out but close enough by Florida's recent standards.

A few weeks after the end of the season, though, came the real body blow: Urban Meyer, who had won two national titles in his six seasons in Gainesville, announced his retirement.

Athletic director Jeremy Foley moved fast, hiring Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp -- who had been the Longhorns' coach-in-waiting -- to replace Meyer. Muschamp has Gainesville ties, having lived about three blocks from Florida Field until he was in the eighth grade, when his family moved to Georgia.

Four former Auburn football players admitted involvement in robbery last week

Quote
AUBURN - Four former Auburn players admitted their involvement in a robbery last week that quickly saw them dismissed from the football team by coach Gene Chizik.

Witnesses say "multiple handguns" were used, according to court documents released Tuesday.

Court papers show Mike McNeil, Antonio Goodwin, Shaun Kitchens and Dakota Mosley admitted shortly after their arrest they were involved in a robbery last Thursday. The court documents say victims and witnesses reported McNeil, Goodwin and Kitchens "forcibly entered" and used handguns at a residence on Lee Road in Auburn. Auburn police said it recovered a handgun in a car driven by Mosley. McNeil, Goodwin and Kitchens were also in the car.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Tony Mitchell, Charvez Davis and Trevor Releford all scored 12 points to lead Alabama to a 68-44 victory over Coastal Carolina on Tuesday night in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament.

The top-seeded Crimson Tide (22-11), which felt jilted at being left out of the NCAA field after winning the SEC West, built a 20-point lead late in the first half and never let the short-handed Chanticleers (28-6) get anything going.

Now 17-0 at Coleman Coliseum, Alabama will host either New Mexico or UTEP.

Ten running backs to watch this college season

It doesn’t take a math major to understand that a good running back can make all the difference to a football team. This season’s crop of running backs have several difference-makers and several who could make a run at the Heisman Trophy.

http://blogs.orlandosentinel.com/sports_college/2011/03/ten-running-backs-to-watch-this-college-season.html

I'm thinking they aren't in any order - because TR would be number 1 in my opinion Smiley
