In his first four games as Florida's coach, Will Muschamp is undefeated, by a gaudy margin, and his Gators have steadily risen from 22nd to 12th in the country.
In the aftermath of last season's disappointment, there is desperate desire in Gainesville to embrace this 4-0 start, even if it came at the expense of lightweight opponents. The latest pushover was Kentucky, which Florida beat 48-10 in Lexington on Saturday.
But reality rides into town this week. The Gators (2-0 in the SEC) host No. 3 Alabama at 8 p.m. Saturday (CBS) in a game that should provide a more accurate evaluation of how close they are to vying for conference supremacy.
If any of that sounds familiar, it is because former coach Urban Meyer began his Florida tenure with a similar storyline in 2005. The Gators were 4-0 that year, too, before a demoralizing 31-3 loss in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
"That butt whuppin' in '05 opened our eyes up," said Joe Cohen, who was a defensive tackle on that team. "You take every game to heart, but to lose like that was embarrassing. We had to prove to ourselves we were better than that."
