Alabama's bubble burst Sunday when it failed to hear its name called as one of the 68 teams who will play in the NCAA Tournament. The Crimson Tide will now host Coastal Carolina in Coleman Coliseum on Tuesday night at 6 p.m. in the first round of the NIT.

I'll just post the quotes from the article

Disappointed Anthony Grant is grateful for Tide's No. 1 seed in the NIT

Don Kausler Jr.

Quote
"We certainly had hopes that we would be able to get an invitation, but obviously that didn't work out, so there's disappointment.

The thing we've got to be able to do is move on and understand we've got a great opportunity to continue our season and continue to try to play for a championship. We'll have to regroup in a short period of time."

On leaving Bama out:

Quote
"I really don't look at other teams, The committee's got a very tough process they have to go through. ...We're obviously disappointed that we did not make the field, but it is an invitational tournament. I certainly respect the decisions that were made."

Ohio St AD Gene Smith (committee chairman) on Alabama in particular"

Quote
"A lot of people put head-to-head as a high priority in their criteria for different situations

There were things with Alabama that didn't stack up compared to the other teams that became blemishes. All of these teams have blemishes and assets and things of that nature that paid attention to what their total resume was, and at the end of the day, they just didn't get enough votes."

Grant on VCU making it in (GRRRR):

Quote
"I've never looked at things that way, obviously I'm very happy for VCU and those kids that we had an opportunity to be a part of their lives. I wish them all of the best. Our situation is our situation."

Grant on what Bama needs to do moving forward to be sure to make it in:

Quote
"The process in terms of NCAA tournament selection appears to be a moving target, so you've got to evaluate what you need to do and how you need to do it"

Georgia Tech has OUR coach on their wish list

With the Paul Hewitt era of Georgia Tech basketball in the history books, the Yellow Jackets will turn their attention to finding a new basketball coach. Athletic Director Dan Radakovich laid out his plans on Saturday for the hiring process and a wide range of names have been rightly and wrongly connected to the job.

"It is very wide-open right now. As you think about this right now, there are probably three buckets of individuals who fit right in this right now: current head coaches, current assistants and people who are not in one of those other two buckets," Radakovich said.
"We are looking for the best person to come in here and take over this job and lead our basketball program. We do not have a set level of criteria. That is what the search process is for."

Radakovich said in the press conference that he would be willing to spend top dollar for an elite or high profile coach. One name that has emerged early on is Alabama coach Anthony Grant. Grant is licking his wounds on Sunday after his team's bubble was burst by the NCAA after a 21 win season. Grant spent a decade as an assistant at Florida, won 24-plus games in three years at Virginia Commonwealth (2 NCAA appearances) and posted a 38-26 record while turning around the Crimson Tide this past year.

The top-five tourney snubs of 2011
By Eamonn Brennan

Quote
Alabama Crimson Tide (21-11, 12-4 in the SEC; RPI: 80; SOS: 136)

What the committee would say: "Alabama had a nice SEC season, sure, but we think that 12-4 conference record has more to do with its status as the SEC West 's lone competent team and less to do with any inherent quality on Alabama's part. What's more, every game counts. You can't lose play one of the worst high-major nonconference schedules in the country -- rank: 294 -- and expect to get the benefit of the doubt unless you easily handle that schedule. Alabama went 9-7 against that slate. It lost to Iowa, Seton Hall and St. Peter's. Its RPI would be one of the worst to ever get in the NCAA tournament. We like the eye test, but it only goes so far, and we can't ignore Bama's ugly resume just because we think Anthony Grant's team "looks" like it can compete in the tournament."

What fans would say: "Dudes ... we went 12-4 in the SEC! We were 4-4 against the RPI top 50! Sure, we had a bad weekend in November. So what? Whatever happened to considering how teams played late in the season? (We were 8-4 in our last 12 games, including two wins over Georgia and one at Tennessee, not to mention the royal jobbing we got in an 81-77 loss to Vanderbilt.) For that matter, whatever happened to considering how teams played against their conferences? The SEC West was bad, but we didn't get to 12-4 merely by beating Auburn, LSU and Arkansas. We're one of the best defensive teams in the country! If you don't think we're a tournament team, you just haven't been paying attention."

John Pelphrey was fired as the head basketball coach at Arkansas on Sunday, ending a rocky four-year career at the school.

Pelphrey learned of his fate during an end of the season meeting with Arkansas athletics director Jeff Long Sunday morning. He is expected to meet with the team this afternoon before the school officially announces the coaching change. Long is expected to hold a press conference tonight but released a statement on the firing.

“After a thorough and comprehensive evaluation of our men’s basketball program, including an assessment of the overall student-athlete experience within our program, it is clear that we have not made the progress over the last four years that is necessary to return Razorback Basketball to a place of national relevance.” Long said. “As a program, our initial goals are to challenge for Southeastern Conference championships, compete in the NCAA Tournament and support our student-athletes in the pursuit of a degree. Our program’s tradition demonstrates those goals are certainly attainable at the University of Arkansas.

“The University of Arkansas has a proud tradition in basketball including playing in one of college basketball’s best arenas, Bud Walton Arena, and in front of the nation’s most passionate fans. It is because of this passion that we seek to elevate our program on and off the court.”

NFL Players File Antitrust Suit Against League as Owners Lock Out Players

"WASHINGTON -- Unable to decide how to divvy up $9 billion a year, NFL owners and players put the country's most popular sport in limbo Friday by breaking off labor negotiations hours before their contract expired. The union decertified; the league imposed a lockout.

Ten players, including MVP quarterbacks Tom Brady and Peyton Manning, sued the owners in federal court in Minneapolis. Then, at midnight, the owners locked out the players -- signaling the NFL's first work stoppage since 1987.

"We are locked out," union president and former player Kevin Mawae said in a text message to The Associated Press. "We were informed today that players are no longer welcome at team facilities."

Hurt: Today's wait will be long for Alabama

"ATLANTA | The switch to Daylight Savings Time will take care of one hour, but it is still going to be an agonizing wait for the University of Alabama basketball team.

The Crimson Tide would love to be one of the 68 teams chosen for the NCAA Tournament field this afternoon at about 5 p.m., but is locked on the dreaded bubble with a group of other teams who share similarly blemished resumes.

Alabama's chances center solely on the hope that the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee - a group that has a distinctly non-Southern flavor this year, with no Southeastern Conference representation - feels the SEC was a quality league, and Alabama's 13 SEC wins merit a chance. "

What a wonderful story for all of us Bama fans to add to our memoirs of Bama sports. In just two years, Coach Grant has taken a program that was at the very bottom of the SEC and put it back where it once was, at the top. It's amazing how the players conditioned themselves to Coach Grants demands and are now in a position to reach the ultimate goal of NCAA basketball, going to the "BIG Dance". This is a story that I will never forget and I'm sure you won't either. Roll Tide!!

"The Class of 2012 is now on the boards of recruiters across the nation, and Georgia may have lost its grip.

Alabama already has commitments from athlete Kenyan Drake, running back Justin Taylor and defensive tackle Dakota Bell. Florida has a verbal from running back Mike Davis.

What about Auburn? The Tigers are the perceived frontrunner for Kenno Loyal, another running back.

Meanwhile, Tennessee got a commitment from Imani Cross.

That begs the question: What in the name of Vince Dooley is going on across the border?"

Breaks my heart. Wink  UGA is behind in recruiting in their own state. Kiss

Dang, should have put this in the recruiting thread.
