Auburn will play Memphis in the Birmingham Bowl, it has been confirmed.

AL.com reported earlier this week Auburn was expected to land in the in-state bowl at Legion Field. ESPN reported today the matchup against Memphis was confirmed.

Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. CT on Dec. 30. ESPN will broadcast the game.

Question: Will Jeremy Johnson's invitation to the Heisman ceremony affect preparation for the bowl?

Is he serving the Dr Pepper's there?

This is a great trip for the barn team. I hope they get to visit the Vulcan and B'ham Zoo. That will be a trip they will never forget.  :eyeroll:

What a great recruiting tool for the barn. They get to tell area recruits "If you come down the to the pasture to play ball we promise we'll take you home for the holiday.

The last time they played there, an Auburn alum, who was so disappointed in their season, parked his car near Legion Field and left his 2 tickets under the wiper blade, for anyone who wanted them, then left to go shopping. When he got back, there were 20 more tickets stuck under the wiper blade.

They will be saving money on travel expenses and getting their 'fair share' of the overall SEC bowl $$$.

It's a win/win.   :dunno:

Bad news. Due to lack of 6-6 teams or better this year & too many bowls, two 5-7 teams will go to bowls. Sad.

That is true. They travel but they do not spend money. One day trips without hotels stays and they pack their lunch.

They should bring up some FCS teams instead.

I think I laughed for two hours straight when I saw this. In any other year, this would be really amusing. This year, with a chance for our boys to bring home #16, this is one of the funniest things I have seen in ages. I don't know if it would be funnier to see the barn lose the game or to see them win and watch the players and fans get excited about it.  :lol2: :lol2:

I disagree. 
I'd rather watch a bad bowl game than watch reruns of 'Lawrence Welk' and such.
At least when a bowl game is on, you can argue: "Honey, this is a bowl game.  I'm leading the pick-'em contest, and need this game to beat my brother!!"

They should have a rematch between API and Jax State.

I can't imagine the Barn players being motivated to prep for this game.  And Musch has taken off leaving them with no DC.

Memphis, however, will likely be into it and come to play.  Could be interesting.

It is a win-win for us.  If they lose, we win.  If they win, the SEC wins.

I think the Birmingham Bowl Trophy will look good in their trophy case. It will look good with their cow-milking awards, swimming championships, stuffed eagles, Jeremy Johnson Heisman Award, Gus Malzahn Coach of the Decade Award from Colin Cowherd, the Opelika News National Championship Trophy of 2004, & many more prestigious awards.

Paxton Lynch is not your typical quarterback.

The Memphis junior has not yet declared for the NFL Draft, but analysts are already projecting him as the top quarterback in the class.

Lynch is the quarterback NFL scouts drool over and he's the reason why Auburn is not treating the Birmingham Bowl lightly.

"People may look at it like we're going to the Birmingham Bowl, so we should be sad about it, but it's an opportunity for us to go against a top-5 draft pick for our defense," Auburn middle linebacker Justin Garrett said. "That motivates me enough to get out there and go hard every day."

Lynch set records for passing yards (3,670) and touchdowns (28) while throwing only three interceptions and completing 69 percent of his passes. The Manning Award finalist tied an NCAA record with seven touchdown passes on nine completions in the first half of Memphis' regular-season finale against SMU.

The quarterback leading Memphis to a 37-24 vitory against then-No. 13 Ole Miss in October -- the first win for Memphis against a ranked opponent since 1996 -- has especially grabbed Auburn's attention.

No one knows Gus Malzahn like Gus Malzahn.

The Auburn coach is completely aware of the shortfalls his offense suffered throughout the 2015 season. The identity crisis at quarterback was a surprise, and so, too, was the lack of a go-to receiver in an offense many figured would count on D'haquille Williams.

Two quarterback changes and the program's ejection of Williams later, Malzahn's offense hasn't been up to snuff. In fact, it's his second-worst scoring offense in his 10 years coaching college football.

Auburn has sold out its allotment of tickets for the Birmingham Bowl and has requested more, according to the athletics department.

The bowl game provided Auburn with 8,500 tickets in its initial allotment. The department began taking orders Sunday with priority season ticketholders provided opportunity to purchase tickets by Wednesday.

I'd rather go to the Terlet Bowl.
