TUSCALOOSA -- Sarah Patterson laughed when it was noted that she is only one national championship away from equaling the number that Paul Bryant won when he was Alabama's head football coach.
"Every reporter has told me that!" Alabama's veteran gymnastics coach said after her team returned from Cleveland, where it won the program's fifth national title.
"I go back to when we won that first one in 1988," Patterson said. "I felt then as I do now. I just feel fortunate to be a small part of the rich history and tradition of the University of Alabama.
"A lot of people try to compare one thing to another, but just to know you've contributed to the history and tradition, I think that makes it all worthwhile."
