Around Campus / The Quad / Re: "Nick Saban wants this year's running backs to establish their own identity"
|

Nick Saban doesn't want another Trent Richardson to emerge from his pool of running backs this season.
He doesn't want another Mark Ingram, either.
What the Alabama coach desires is a player -- or two, or three, or four -- to grow into a role and establish his own, unique niche on a 2012 team he has repeatedly said will have its own, unique identity.
"I just think there's an opportunity for another guy who is a different style, who has a different personality, and maybe different characteristics as a runner," Saban said Thursday at SEC Media Days. "They could be offensive players you have that get featured in a little different way and become as productive or more productive in another way....
The "another guy" probably means Saban is still evaluating who will be the second RB. Hart and Fowler definitely fit the mold of "different characteristics", though in opposite ways, and Yeldon could cause some serious issues for defenses, due to his sheer athleticism and versatility. I think Lacy returns as the starter and has similar characteristics to Richardson, with an added spin move.

Does it look like any of their players will transfer to Bama? Anybody got any info regarding that yet?
Nothing, not even a rumor, on message boards about Bama. See related thread about the other schools after PSU players: Click here for linkThat's due to Bama already being loaded with talent. I would guess there are no more than 2 players who Saban would be interested in. One is a LB and has 2 years of eligibility left. I think Georgia is interested in him. About the only player I see Bama looking at is backup QB Rob Bolden. The guy was the 4th rated QB nationally coming out of HS as a dual-threat QB, has playing experience, and would fill a huge hole Bama has at QB.

Have to admit I am unfamiliar with the current roster at PSU. Anyone know if any of their players are SEC caliber?
You might try this story. Some of the players they refer to are seniors, players you would not expect to transfer. They really don't talk much about sophomores. Click here for linkYep, mostly focus on senior starters. The one guy I can see Bama looking at is QB Rob Bolden, who is a junior and not the team's starter. Bama has a glaring need at backup QB, and this guy would be a good addition.

Back to the OP's topic of this thread: Rumor that Aubs have contacted 3 PSU players about transferring. They may end up with a QB on the Plains yet...
From what I remember Penn State does not have a QB. A good one anyway. But he's certainly better than anything at Aubland. Yes, that's true. I'd be surprised to see Bama pursuing any of these players, as we have a full roster already, altough a backup QB is the one area where Bama has a huge need, and it would be nice to keep him away from the Barn.

Click here for linkWading through the aftermath churned up in the wake of the NCAA’s sanctions on Penn State, we wrote that “the NCAA has declared it’s open season on any and all current or incoming Penn State players, essentially creating a free-agent frenzy that has the potential to utterly dwarf what transpired at USC three years ago.”
CBSSports.com‘s Bruce Feldman wrote that “a feeding frenzy” has already begun in major college football, with FBS programs openly — albeit anonymously — acknowledging that their programs have already faxed to Penn State the names of current players in which they’re interested... Lane Kiffin is a parasite (SIAP). What about Mark Richt? Click here for linkGeorgia only has 75 scholarship athletes, so they have room to grow. Bama, on the other hand, has a full roster, and I think it unlikely that Saban will go after any PSU players.

These PSU folks are despicable. I guess he thinks we will feel sorry for him and prevent him from being indicted. Ousted Penn State University president Graham Spanier insisted that he wouldn’t have ignored child sexual-abuse complaints as the school’s top administrator because he was beaten repeatedly as a child by his father, his lawyer told The Associated Press on Monday. Spanier received regular “disciplinary beatings” by his father as a teen, and had to have his nose straightened several times, lawyer Peter Vaira said. The abuse was never sexual, Vaira said. Click here for linkHe has to know that he's next -- they've already indicted those working under him on this matter. And yes, he's desperate.

I think it's a little light, actually.
I think about the only other thing left was the death penalty. I think the death penalty would be less damaging than what happened today. I think you are right. Remember all the scholly we lost and what it did to our program. PSU will feel this 10-15 years down the road. By the time this is over they will have 45-55 scholly players. But I think it would be unfair to to current players to suspend play this year. They didn't do anything wrong. They can at least look forward to playing on Saturdays. SMU got the death penalty in 1987. They only had one winning season over the next 20 years. SMU previously had posted a record of 45-5-1 from 1980–1984, which was the highest win percentage (0.892) in Division 1-A over that span. SMU did not make a bowl game after the sanctions until 2009 when it played Nevada in the Hawaii Bowl. SMU was in the Southwest Conference, but did not receive an invitation to join what is now the Big12, so ended up in the WAC, then Conference USA, and finally the Big East next year. The NCAA has not used this punishment since. So I do feel that the death penalty would have a bigger impact than scholarship reductions and bowl bans on a team's ability for future success, especially since these other sanctions accompanied SMU's punishment, and also likely would be included with the death penalty. Still, we likely won't see PSU return to prominence in the next few decades, if ever. While these other types of sanctions have not decimated a school's football program to the same extent as the death penalty (USC doesn't seem to have missed a beat, Miami mostly came back, and Bama is on top of the college football world right now), the Big12 is also looking into sanctions. PSU's conference affiliation might be in jeopardy, now or in the future, and that could be the final blow.

Click here for linkWhy are they excited?: It's probably not at the level of what Tennessee has in its wide receiving corps, but the Tigers have a solid one-two punch in wideout Emory Blake and tight end Philip Lutzenkirchen. Lutzenkirchen, in particular, should see his receiving numbers blossom during his senior season because of the change at coordinator. The offensive line is still young, but the majority of players who are expected to comprise the first unit are a year older, bigger and wiser. The defensive line might just be the best position group on either side of the ball. Led by Lemonier, this group also includes tackles Jeff Whitaker and Kenneth Carter, both of whom have seen significant playing time during the past two seasons. The Tigers' tandem of specialists, kicker Cody Parkey and Stephen Clark, are both among the best at their position within the SEC.... 35 to 3?
