College football should have an early signing period in August, similar to the one college basketball has in November, but it's not enough to speed up a process that's been accelerated every step of the way except for the conclusion.  There should be one asterisk added in each sport to protect the student-athlete.
If the head coach leaves between the time you sign in the early period and the late period, you have the option to sign with a different school in the late period. No penalty. No sitting out a year. No having to throw yourself on the mercy of an NCAA committee. That option addresses the reality that prospects sign with coaches as well as schools.
It doesn't address differences of opinion in your own family, but an early signing period could've prevented some of the drama surrounding the most talked-about 2012 Alabama commitment, safety Landon Collins from Louisiana.

The plus side would be that it would take a lot of pressure off of everyone; the student, the parents, and the coaches. The negative side; these are young kids and some will change their mind. If they have to go before the NCAA to plead their case for change, they may holler foul to get their way, and cause Universities to come under investigation by the NCAA.

I agree with you about the early signing period. IMO, in most cases where these kids change their minds there's usually a coach or some type of an agent involved with this, if they signed early it would then take away from these people the chance to market these young men to other schools.

Good point. At any rate, it's not likely to happen because it makes too much sense.  Cheesy

I would think the NCAA would love it, it would sure save them tons of money being spent on all of these investigations, but you are right, when has the NCAA ever done anything that makes sense.  Wink

I know Saban is on record favoring an early signing period.  And it makes sense, taking pressure off these kids.  Of course, Saban always seems to bring in blue chip recruits on signing day, and hopefully that won't change.  I think what the early signing period means to him is the ability to focus more on the students who have not signed yet, instead of making sure all the commits remain on board over the course of the year.

An early signing period should make that student athlete hands off to other schools trying to recruit him.  I understand students changing their minds with a coaching change, including bringing in a different coordinator and a change of scheme (NFL style to spread, for example).  Also I can see a change of mind when NCAA sanctions are looming but the coach has not yet been fired.  For example, if PSU did not fire Jo Pa until after signing day, those kids should still have the opportunity to change their minds if they signed early.
