If Notre Dame is a national brand — Kelly’s roster has players from 27 states, coast to coast, unfortunately none from Alabama — then the Tide is a study in homegrown success, in regional scope. Roughly half its roster is from in-state. Over all, it is overwhelmingly from the Deep South.

It is national, but only among Catholics.  It is not like they can pull any kid they want from any state.  A Baptist kid from Texas is not the least bit interested in Notre Dame.

They were getting whomever they wanted in the 60s, 70's and at least part of 80s. National recruiting due mostly to network exposure, I guess. How else could Lou Holtz win? We used to laugh about them only having maybe 1 or 2 guys from Indiana.

I know two people who went to ND and they always cite high academic standards as the reason they can't recruit well. And who wants to spend time in icy South Bend instead of the sunny South?

Same problem we have. Getting the athletes into school. NCAA requirements? But once they are in school they have ways to keep them in school. Tutors, football classes, lenient football friendly professors, study halls, etc. That is mostly an excuse used by ND, the PAC12, and the BIG10.

I think it was last year I heard the most 4 and 5 star athletes came from Tx, FL, Cal, and Ga.

As to the weather, cold weather schools versus the deep south, I'm not sure how big a factor that is to 17 and 18 year olds. I never worrried about it at that age. When you are outdoors in cold weather, if you stand around with your hands in your pockets you'll be cold. But we always say, if you get cold it means you're not working hard enough.

I don't even remember having any trouble transitioning to the heat either. Not at 18. Also, while there are little tricks to playing in 100 degree heat (pickle juice) there are also tricks to acclimating to cold weather. For one, southeners have a tendency to gather around the heater before they go outside in the cold, as if you could somehow store the warmth up. Wrong. What you want to do is turn the temperature way down inside, so that the outside cold is not such a shock or drastic swing.

Pickle juice?  Do you drink it or spray it on your body?

I think Eddie Lacy may be Catholic -- he did the sign of the cross after his TD reception in the BCSCG.  And Bama always has a few kids on the roster who went to Catholic High Schools, though that could be for the education.

Eddie is from Louisiana....heavily Catholic.
