Title: Mark Richt fired by Georgia
Post by: pmull on November 29, 2015, 11:54:32 AM
Going 9-3 is not as good enough. He has a 144-51 record including 6 SEC East Titles, 2 SEC championships and 2 SEC Coach of the Year. Expectations will be very high for the next coach.

Quote
Georgia has fired coach Mark Richt, a family source tells ESPN's Mark Schlabach.

Richt has been the Bulldogs coach for 15 seasons and taken Georgia to a bowl game in each of the past 14 years. The Bulldogs are bowl eligible again in 2015 after a 9-3 regular season. He would pick up his 10th double-digit-win season with a bowl victory.

Even so, the Bulldogs are having a disappointing season after starting as the clear-cut favorite in the SEC East only to get blown out by Alabama and Florida.

Maybe Jimbo decided on UGA over LSU?    ???

Isn't Mark Schlabach also the source for rumors of Les Miles' firing?

Miles is the coach at LSU per the AD after the A&M win last night.

UGA Coach Mark Richt to Step Down

Quote
"Coach Richt and I met Sunday morning to discuss the status of our football program," said UGA J. Reid Parker Director of Athletics Greg McGarity, "and we mutually agreed that he would step down as head coach and would have the opportunity to accept other duties and responsibilities at UGA following the bowl game."

"I appreciate the opportunity of serving the University as well as considering any other options that may present themselves in the future," said Richt.

"On behalf of the University of Georgia Athletic Association and Bulldogs everywhere, I want to thank Mark and Katharyn for 15 years of remarkable service to the UGA community, hundreds of our students and staff, and to college football," McGarity continued.

I don't ever remember this many open HC jobs at the end of a season.

Where are they going to find coaches to fill all those slots?

I'm curious to see who Georgia hires.

Mark Richt fired, and Georgia's top target is Alabama DC Kirby Smart

Quote
Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart is the Bulldogs' top target, SB Nation's Steven Godfrey reports. Smart played defensive back at Georgia from 1995-98, and was on the coaching staff in 1999 (administrative assistant) and 2005 (running backs coach).

I think everyone expected Smart to make the short list.

Maybe things will turn out like they do in the NFL and all these coaches will just move from school to school and not really change things all that much...  :dunno:

I don't know but CKS blows his chance to catch after CNS if he leaves. CLK is not a HC but he is a great OC and I would think he has started building a championship offense. Gosh, he would be crazy to leave at this point. Just my personal feelings ruight now. RTR!

A bunch of assistants like Smart, Cristobal, & Kiffin, smaller college HC's like Toledo, maybe a former or current NFL guy like Chip Kelly/John Gruden.

Richt to Maryland? I don't see it.

Quote
Since rumblings of discontent in Athens began earlier this season, there has been the mention of his connection to College Park -- Maryland associate athletic director and former Georgia AD Damon Evans.

Here we go!

Quote
Mark Richt is gone and it may not be entirely his fault. Georgia’s veteran coach may have been at the wrong place, wrong time with Kirby Smart seemingly ready to make a move.

We’ve been over the angst at Georgia regarding Richt enough. Fifteen sometimes-glorious years came to an end Sunday after a nine-win season. Strange, yes. But considering the possible availability of Alabama’s defensive coordinator, it makes total sense.

According to reports, Smart has become the leading candidate at South Carolina. It may be as simple as that: Smart being available made Richt expendable.

Maybe Maryland, Miami, Virginia, et al?

Mark Richt remains interested in another coaching job and said Monday he will listen ''to anybody who has interest in me'' as he prepares for his final game as Georgia's coach.

Wow, with his class and teaching of being a good human being for society he will have his choice of jobs. CMR is an excellent coach. I would love to see him coach under CNS about 4 years. RTR!

I would love for them to miss out on Kirby and end up with about their 8th choice, then go on to have losing seasons every year until they fire the guy.  Then do that again 3 or 4 times.  :lol2:

That's been just about the outcome for every team that's fired a coach hoping to find a replacement that can compete with Saban.  The barn did have two miracle seasons, both of which included numerous last second/single score wins, but has been awful otherwise.

True, phil.
Very difficult to satisfy the fan base when you pay a coach $5M.  Everyone expects instant success.  It's unlikely that the new UGA coach will succeed.  Only a handful of the high-dollar coaches have survived in the SEC.

These are the SEC teams that seem to have upgraded with their latest head coaching change:

Miss State
Ole Miss
Kentucky
Florida
Auburn (Gus is better than CheeseNips)
South Carolina (Lou Holtz to Spurrier)
Tennessee
Alabama
Texas A&M (coaching change made entering SEC)

Neutral:
Arky - coaching change necessitated, don't know if better or worse
Mizzou (same coach forever)
LSU - coaching change necessitated, they did OK hiring Les
Georgia - TBD

Negative:
Vandy - coaching change necessitated, replacement has taken Vandy backwards

Saw two different articles addressing this today.  Everyone wants someone who can beat Saban.  The problem: Saban is a once in a generation coach.  Also, he's been at this for a long time now.  The best anyone in the SEC can do right now is hire a good coach and hope they catch Bama on an off day the way Ole Miss has two years in a row.

I don't think I would say that Vandy's new coach took them backwards even though, compared to James Franklin, he did.  More accurately though, he just restored them to what they've always been... :-X
