Title: Alabama Basketball Early Season Observations -12/09/2018
Post by: Marshal Dillon on December 09, 2018, 07:36:25 PM
We have seen 9 Tide basketball games, so far. To say the least, it has been a rollercoaster ride with no seatbelts. We have looked very bad and very good. We have beaten two good, well-coached teams in Wichita State & Arizona. We have lost to Georgia State who is 6-3 with losses to BB titans Creighton, Montana, & Liberty (we play Liberty in our next game in Huntsville). We also got kicked hard by mighty Northeastern who is 5-5 with victories over Harvard, Bucknell, Eastern Michigan, & Oakland. We struggled against Murray State, but won.

The SEC is looking very tough this year. #7 Tennessee beat #1 Gonzaga today, & with Kentucky, Misses State, Florida, Auburn, LSU, Arkansas, Vandy, & Missouri looking good. In other words, we have to get our act together. Our FT shooting had been decent but fell apart against Arizona, Petty & Ingram have been hot & cold, Donta Hall consistent and Kira Lewis and Alex Reese have been huge surprises. Johnson, Jr has been invisible. We have a solid core of players, they just need to meld into a team.

Please add your opinions and/or observations.

Repeating something I wrote on another thread that Riley Norris played 8 minutes against Ga. State and never played against Arizona. Wish I knew more about what is going on with him. He injects immediate enthusiasm and hustle into a game.

This has been a frustrating start to what I thought was going to be a good season. We lack leadership. We do not hussle and turn the ball over too much. We also go to sleep at times on defense. Lots of improvement is needed.

Jones has all kind of potential but he is off to a slow start. He cannot hit free throws either and that hurts us. Teams are learning to foul him rather than let him get to the basket. Hall is also off to a slow start. Ingram is a good player but still turns the ball over too much. Reese is playing well and is our most consistent shooter. Petty is either hot or cold. Lewis is outstanding. Very surprised he is already playing at an elite level.

Johnson's teams have started slow each year but get better as the season goes on. We can only that that happens this year because we are far from being a good team at this point. The Arizona win was a big one. Hopefully that will be the spark this team needed.

I mentioned on another thread that our next game is against Liberty. Liberty beat mighty Northeastern who beat us 68-52.
