For discussion:

FSU has one loss and is ranked behind 2-loss teams. Would they be 2 if they hadn't lost to NC State? Is it even possible for an ACC or Big East team that runs the table to be in the top 4 at the end of the year. If not, doesn't this ultimately make winn a NC a function of being allowed into a major conference, compelling other top flight teams to play you?

I think if FSU were in the SEC, depending on their schedule, they would probably have 2 or 3 losses at this point. What has killed them is being in the ACC where on any given day, NC St or Wake can beat you and end just about any chance of a run at the NC. If they are undefeated at this point, I think pollsters would have them at #3 behind us. Having said that, if they were undefeated and beat Florida, they might theoretically jump us. At present, it's all speculation. But to your point, FSU playing in the ACC certainly doesn't help them.

There was a time when FSU lived on playing a weak schedule to get into the championship game.  Same for Miami when it was in the Big East.  I'm glad those days are behind us.

Florida State is terrible in the computer rankings. They average # 17. They have a high of # 15 and a low of #22. A win over Florida will help but they will not be able to get over the NC St loss and the computers.

If you are going to play in a weak conference, you have to go undefeated.  Period.

If you manage to accomplish that, and have 2 or 3 good out of conference wins, then you have a chance to get in.  Case in point:  look at Notre Dame (essentially a Big 10 team for our discussion purposes).

A win over Florida would have certainly helped if they could get it.  But they would need another good out of conference win to go with it.  The last two years they played a home and home with Oklahoma, which helps considerably.  But they lost BOTH of those games.  They only help if you win them.

Laughing

This year they don't have that 2nd good out of conference game at all for whatever reason.  Which leaves the lingering thought that if they had played an Oklahoma team again this year they probably would have lost again.
