This is my 8th day on it and I've lost 8 lbs. so far. My gut is fading faster than Terrelle Pryor's career. I'm walking every morning as well. I'm up to an hour every morning and because of all the protein, even a brisk walk seems effortless. That's saying something for an old fart that hasn't hit a lick at any exercise in about 3 years.

Has anybody else been on it and if so, how did you like it?

Congrats on the 8 lbs. I don't know anything about the Atkins Diet. I do know the key to losing weight is to burn more calories than you take in. I am convienced it takes exercise and diet to lose weight and keep it off. Watch what you eat and keep up that walking and you will do great. In addition to helping you lose weight the walking is good for your heart.

I have used the Atkins Diet a couple of times over the past years and have found it to be the best and easiest way to lose pounds. I first tried it because my dad developed adult onset diabetes and I wanted to change from a high sugar/carb diet to a high protein diet to reduce chance of developing diabetes. The Atkins Diet has worked on all counts for me - I lost about 10 pounds (I have never been very overweight), sugar levels declined, and an added benefit was lower cholesterol levels. Over the years I have added foods back into my regular diet, like cookies & ice cream, but I always try to make sure that protein makes up the majority of my food intake.

I have been on the Atkins diet before.  It worked great for me.  In fact, I need to do it again.

I am a meat and potatoes guy any way, so it really wasn't that hard for me.  Just skip the potatoes and have some more meat.

The biggest problem I had was finding something to drink.  At the time I drank sweet tea and sodas.  I could not stand diet sodas back then.  I finally started making tea using Splenda and that worked pretty good.

I have no idea why it works, but I know a lot of people who lose weight doing it, if they can stick to it.  Maybe all of that meat fills you up so you don't need to take in as many calories to feel full.  I wasn't doing any exercise at all, so I must have been taking in fewer net/usable calories.  I suppose the process of digesting meat consumes more calories too.

Thanks pmull, Kokopuf, and SC. I've always been a fairly athletic and active person, but being in the business I'm in, it's not 8-5 and it consists of sitting at my desk, in the car or conducting business in restaurants. NOT a good combination. I'm on 2 blood pressure medications, triglycerides aren't great, cholesterol is borderline and I'm diagnosed with "glucose intolerance", which is a step away from Diabetes. I'm working to make all those conditions non-factors and relieve myself of all meds.

All the money in the world does you no good if you're not around to spend it. Wish me luck.

BTW, my daughter is an RN and recommends this diet. She has been on it 3 weeks and has lost 21 lbs.

In regard to losing weight, the diet with little stress is to eat what you are used to but use smaller portions. It actually works.

MY hubby and I have both used the Atkins diet as our preferred method of losing weight.  We both like it because you can eat meat and cheese and things we like.   I'm not a bread and potatoes person so giving those up is easy for me.  However, neither of us has ever done a completely strict Atkins because we always have some fruit at breakfast.I never lost a lb. a day even though I already walk 2 miles a day with our dogs and ride a recumbent bike 10.6 miles 6 days a week.

For all the fuss from doctors about how bad it is for you, we both had a major improvement in our good cholesterol at our next doctor's check-up.  I have a good reading anyway and have never had to take cholesterol drugs.  His was not as good although it wasn't that bad but he is on Crestor.

I'm taking a few pounds off right now but because of fresh peaches, cherries, and canteloupes, which I refuse to give up,  I am counting calories instead of doing Atkins.  I still do the same exercise.  I'm not exactly a chunk so I don't lose weight quickly but I've averaged a little over a lb a week.  I have about 5 more lbs. to go and after that I get too skinny looking.

I do think that Atkins is a wonderful winter diet because all the good fruits aren't around then.  And I do think it is healthy and gives you energy once you get past the first few days of the funny fuzz in your stomach ketosis feeling.  Men always lose weight faster than women.  I think it's because your muscles burn it better.  Hence, I'm just happy to watch the weight on the scale slowly drop!

If you need something to sweeten tea, coffee, etc. I find liquid Stevia is the best. You have to experiment with the right amount because it can get way too sweet easy.  I gave up all sugar sweetened drinks when I was in my 20s and have never gone back to them (and that was awhile ago for sure!) but I still want my drinks sweetened.  I also use Stevia to sweeten my breakfast fruit and just drop a drop here and there on it and stir. We also keep Equal and Sweet 'n Low in the house.  He prefers Sweet 'n Low in his iced tea.

Hey 2, I'm always looking for different things to try to lose weight. How does Atkins work? Is it simply all meat and no veggies or sweets?

Little to no carbohydrates at all.  For me that means pretty much meat only, but there are other things that have no carbs that are on the diet.  Unfortunately I couldn't tell you what those things are.  Just look on the nutrition information on the food package.  If it doesn't have any carbs you can eat it.

It also worked for me a couple times to lost 25-30lbs.  Make sure to eat as many low-carb veggies as possible to get all your vitamins.  You'll also need some roughage after eating all that meat and cheese.

Look up the name "Diabetic Ketoacidosis." This is  what you are sending your body into. Not saying it's not worth the benefits. You are basically depriving your body of carbohydrates and then forcing it to burn fat as fuel. Personally I think the better alternative would be to cut all the "simple carbs" processed sugars and such, but keep the complex carbs.  ( think whole what pasta) But that is only my personal opinion.
