Clemson is preparing for its first major bowl trip in 30 years but the Tigers' trip to the Orange Bowl will not result in a major payday for the program.

Programs always seem to talk about losing money going to bowl games, but I'm not buying it.  If it really cost a university money, it simply could choose not to go.  Unsold tickets can still generate some income through alternative channels.  Travel expenses always seemed hyped up, do they include travel by university executives as well?  Perhaps it isn't the cost to the team, but all the extra baggage that results in an accounting loss, or maybe it is just a tax thing.

I would have thought Clemson would make a little money. The exposure of having Clemson play in a BCS bowl for 3.5 hours on air is worth a good bit.

Last year the big loser was UCONN. UCONN had signed up as a member of the big east and was required by the conference to buy so many tickets and so many hotel rooms if they ever won the conference title.

They did last year and well not many UCONN fans traveled out west to see Oklahoma kill them and the school somehow paid off the BCS. Not sure? The loss was in the millions.

That is what is wrong with a conference like the big east being an "AQ" conference.

What does that tell you about the ACC TV package? Shows that the conference winner in the Orange Bowl is not making any money. That doesn't seem right.

I guess everyone has figured it out that the real contest for the National Championship is between the SEC team and who ever they are beating.

I will be surprised if the BCS doesn't go to at least a 4 team playoff - plus 1. Better would be a 8 team playoff with all the rest of the 62 mediocre teams playing in the regular bowl games (Congratulations! You did a good job and got your school to a bowl game in The Birmingham Alabama bowl game!

According to this article the ACC splits the bowl money before deducting the team expenses. The real financial winners in system are the team that don't go bowling. The SEC deducts the team expenses from the bowl payout prior to dividing the money up to give to all schools. This is a small way of rewarding the team for going to a bowl game.

How can Clemson not sell all their tickets to a BCS game?  Undecided And some of you wanted them in the SEC.

There was a good article reviewing spending at bowls (came out after last year's bowls), showing how much money is thrown away at bowls and how few teams make any money at all.  Search for it; was a good review of piggies wasting money.

Here is one (Boogs lost $600k last year): Click here for link

It's easy to understand how a university loses money, they blow it. The university treats a bowl game as an expense-paid vacation for everyone. Administrators (Dean's, AD personnel, Department Heads, politicians, and friends of the President), their wives (maybe even kids), boosters and their wives, get free ride on our dime. Any money the university or sports teams make, belongs to the taxpayers of Alabama, not the univeristy and its cronies.

Don't let those minor issues distract you from the pernicious and fundemnetal evil of school teachers accepting Christmas cookies from their students.

xactly the same

Blowing millions of dollars for friends and cronies on an expense paid vacation is not the same as giving cookies to a teacher. I hope you're not dumb or jaded to accept this action. Maybe I'm misunderstanding your comment.
