DALLAS COUNTY, Alabama -- Jamie Thomas of Selma and his friends caught this mammoth alligator at 8:45 p.m. last Saturday night in Dallas County, south of Selma.

When brought to the scales the gator measured 13 feet, 1 1/2 inches long and weighed 604 pounds, Thomas said.

Thomas holds one of 50 tags made available by the state of Alabama this year established  in the new west-central region that encompasses the Alabama River drainage in Dallas and Wilcox counties and north of U.S. 84 in Monroe County.

That's been going around the innerwebz a lot lately. In actuality, that gator was caught in the Orlando area. My oldest brother lives in Kissimmee and said that this pic and article was in the paper down there.

I don't think this is a fake.  The photo credit is Mobile Press-Register.  Appears to be legit.

Either all the drugs my brother has done through the years has a bearing on this or the pic was posted from the MPR who got it from another source, AP etc.

"My brother on drugs" it is then, although it is highly unlikely to find any gator in the Alabama River, much less a 13 footer. Huh?

I used to work at a national wildlife refuge in Louisiana.  A 13' alligator should weigh more like 800-900 lbs, I'd think.  Maybe it was weighed wrong, or maybe it's not 13'.

Or maybe I'm wrong.

Or maybe they are like humans and most do not weigh what they should.
