Title: Alabama vs Dayton in Basketball in ESPN Tip-Off Marathon
Post by: Marshal Dillon on November 17, 2015, 11:33:22 AM
Just 30 minutes until tip off. The game is @ Dayton so they have a big advantage. Their place holds over 13,000 & it will be packed.

#5, the 6'11" center for Dayton is a freshman. I was hoping he would be too raw to help, but he looks pretty good right now. Taylor looking good and energetic for Bama. Three blocks for Dayton. Pollard, a major player for them gets 2 quick fouls. 6-4 Dayton

16-11 Dayton but Tide hustling & shooting, sometimes within 7-8 seconds a fret getting the ball, very uptempo. Plus, we are FIGHTING for rebounds!! Wow.

18-18 all. Tide is hustling, hitting 3's, rebounding, fighting under the boards, and full of energy. What's wrong with these guys? Have they forgotten everything they learned from years past? Where's the dribble offense, last second shots while off balance or 30 feet away?

Dayton 30 Tide 22, 3:32 left in half. They are doing a good job of blocking our shots and clogging up middle. They have 5 blocks on us.

That hairdo for Ingram of Alabama needs some work. Ingram is really everywhere on the floor. 6'5" freshman guard for Bama. Obasohan gets 2nd foul. 33-22 Dayton.

We've been playing with 2 freshmen, Hall & Ingram a lot.

Donta Hall is a 6'9" but has the arms of a 7 footer. Wow.

Dayton goes on 14-2 run to close out half, 40-24. We have missed several 3's.

Coleman 5'10" going up against 6'11" center to try and score. Guess who won that battle? Somewhat reckless by Coleman and led to block by the center.  48-29 Dayton

First half stats for Tide:

FG 30%
3 PT  2/8
Turnovers 10
FT  4/6

Dayton 9/9 FT and 5/13 3 pointers

Turnovers just killing Bama. 15 so far. 55-31 Dayton

I am not disappointed by our performance against Dayton. They have an experienced team, players who have been to the NCAA Tourney, including the Elite 8, an excellent coach who is in his 5th year with his system. Plus we continue playing hard, but shooting 28% will kill a team. Dayton is shooting 44%, with 7/16 3 pointers, 24 points in the paint, 14/18 on FT's (we're 5/8). 66-35 Dayton, 4:50 left in game.

Tide loses 80-48. Watch for Dayton, they will be in the mix this year.

Wow, from what I watched we have a whole to work on. I know Dayton is good, but we were very bad. It will take some time and we will get better. This is not the year though. RTR!

Has anyone pointed out our weaknesses yet?  I'll wait...

I always want to see Bama win, regardless of what sport they are competing in. Today was no different but knowing what we all know about the basketball team this year, I came away from this game with some hope of a decent season.

Dayton is by no means a team that a first year team wants to pick on especially it being their first game and on their home court. But if you have a new team and would like to give them a first hand look at what the season will look like, schedule a game with Dayton on their home court.

I thought they played decent the first 15 minutes of the first half, they were in reach of the lead, then everything seemed to go bad for the team all the way to the half. The second half was more of the last 5 minutes of the first half. If there is one aspect of their game that is a must to improve, it is their shooting. I know these kids are better shooters than what they showed today and again, they were playing a very good team that was way out of their league at this point in time.

At least they have a game film from today that should help them get better which I think is a very good thing. It's pretty hard to tell the players how bad they played but when you can show them and explain to them as they watch the film how they should have done some things, it's a great learning tool for the team.

Any way, that game is over and I'm looking forward to their next one.

It really looked to me their legs got tired because they could not get off the floor to shoot the ball. Our BB coach always run us to get our legs in game condition. This is why I notice these type of things. RTR!

The team looked the same way in  the second half of their game last Friday night. Their legs looked like spaghetti and they played pretty bad. You are dead on about how our coaches used to run us. We didn't have a very good team when I played basketball in high school but I can promise you one thing we were good at, we were in good shape. We were a small school and some of us were 3 sport athletes and football was the primary sport. I think the coach made us play basketball just to keep us in good shape for football.

Gosh, our situation was the same. I played FB, BB, and ran track. The Mile and 880 relay was my 2 specialties. RTR!

One thing I saw was...we shot the ball right into the defenders hand a lot but I think we can work on that.

As I said earlier, keep your eye on Dayton throughout the year. I saw them play in the Puerto Rico Tip-off last year & was hugely impresses & thought they were an Sweet 16/Elite 8 team. They made it to the 3rd round of the Tourney. Hard to have a lot of positives in a blow out but here goes.

THE GOOD

Six players played 20 or more minutes & 4 others played between 14-19 minutes. CAJ was working different combinations to see if they worked well together.

Donta Hall, freshman had 7 pts & 6 rebounds

Norris had 9 pts & 3 rebounds-Kessens had 7 pts & 4 rebounds in a combined 38 minutes

THE BAD

Coleman seemed to play out-of-control. In 19 minutes we was 1/5 shooting with 3 pts & had 3 turnovers

FG% 29.8

FT 25%

Obasohan was 2/10 shooting

THE UGLY

80-48 Final Score

Rebounds: Dayton 47  Tide 34

FT 52.9%

So, we have plenty of room for improvement and can't blame the special teams?

It's disappointing to see the team lose so badly, but it helps the team and fans understand where we are.  I fully expect to see the team improve as the year goes along.  Conditioning will come with time.  The previous coaching staff never improved the shooting, let's hope the new staff can.

The announcers were pretty impressed at Ingram at PG.  He made some great dishes, but our players couldn't make the shot.  Main weakness of this team is shooting.  I think that is something either a player has or he doesn't.  Unfortunately, the cupboard was left pretty bare of shooters.  It appears CAJ is working to remedy that, but it will take at least another year to get his players into the team.

Yep, the program is a work in progress. CAJ has to get his own players to fit his system. We have to look for incremental progress during the season & beyond. After 6 years of the same slow, grinding, over-dribbling offense it takes time to change course.

It was all downhill from this point.

But, I like what Coach Avery is doing with these guys and I can't wait to see where we are at the end of the year and in the years to come after he has a few more recruiting classes on campus.

Also, insert my standard speech about crappy basketball officiating here.  I don't suggest that one team had an advantage over the other, it was horrible all the way around.  There is way to much "opinion" associated with basketball officiating.

The thing I always look for in a new coach, whether football or BB is progress/improvement over time. This can be during the season and in years, especially the first 3. Does the team look organized, is there energy on the team, how's our defense doing, does the coach look involved on the sidelines, are we competitive, etc? If some of these things are missing, then there are problems.

Nope not long t all, they got a real welcome to reality. I still haven't forgotten that 40 or 50 point beat down from Auburn when Gottfried was in a similar situation.
