Title: Bama Baseball Wins Opener 4-3
Post by: pmull on February 18, 2017, 08:00:16 AM
Greg Goff gets his first win as Alabama Head Coach. Nick Eicholtz, who was a solid Sunday starter for us last year has apparently moved to the Friday Night slot picked up the win with 5 innings giving up 2 runs on 3 hits. Brock Love picked up the save going 4 innings giving up 1 run on 2 hits. Alabama only got 4 runs on 10 hits leaving 9 men on base.

Game Two is at 5:00 today with Jake Walters expected to be on the mound.

Quote
Alabama claimed its first victory of the year with a 4-3 win over Presbyterian College on Friday evening at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. Head coach Greg Goff earned his first career win at Alabama, as the Tide moved to 1-0 on the season.

"I'm just so thankful that the good Lord has brought me here and opened this door," said Goff. "I'm glad that Coach Battle hired me. The biggest thing for me is that these guys have bought in to what we're doing. Nick Eicholtz has been a tremendous leader on and off the field. Cody Henry has been one of our hardest workers, and I think that all of guys are like that. It's a special night because great players make great coaches."

Nick Eicholtz (1-0) earned his first win of the season behind a strong outing that saw the senior go 5.0 innings and allow three runs (two earned) on three hits with no walks and three strikeouts. The senior tossed 80 pitches before handing the ball over to sophomore right-hander Brock Love. Love followed with 4.0 innings of scoreless baseball to earn his first career save. Presbyterian starter Brian Kehner (0-1) suffered the loss, going 5.0 innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on nine hits with a pair of walks and strikeouts.

Whoa, way to many to be left on base. That many normally gets you beat we have to be better than that. RTR!

Pitching line for Eichioltz wasn't bad. Always glad to see a big zero in the walks column.

Our two pitchers combined to only give up 5 hits but allowed 3 runs. Presbyterian  only left 3 men on base. They make the most out of their hits. We left too many runners in scoring position.

Alabama gets a stress free 8-1 win in Game two. We scored 5 runs in the 4th and 2 more in the 5th to put the game away. Jake Walters looked good pitching 6 scoreless innings. He allowed 3 hits and 1 walk while striking out 7.

I watched until the 7th inning. We have some pop in our bats. We hit 4 hrs. At least two others were hit but just foul. More of our outs were sharply hit compared to lazy fly balls and weak ground outs in recent years. JUCO transfer Hunter Alexander looks good. He has gone 5 for 7 with a HR in his first two games.Chandler Taylor hit two HR last night and Conner Short hit one. Sophomore Colby Vance is off to a good start. He has started the season going 5 for 8. He hit the ball hard every time I see him bat. On an otherwise very positive outing we had 9 strikeouts and left 9 on base.

Game Three at 1:05 today. You can watch the game on the Watch ESPN or the ESPN APP.

Alabama out hit Presbyterian 11 to 8. We also had 2 walks to their none and we had a hit by pitch. The difference in the game was timely hits. Presbyterian only left two runners on base. We left 10 after leaving 9 in each of the first two games. The good news is we are hitting the ball hard and getting runners in scoring position. We have to do a better job of getting them home.

We won the series and are off to a 2-1 start. We host Southern Miss on Tuesday for one game. Southern Miss is off to a 3-0 start after making the NCAA Tournament last year with a 41-20 record. We host Oral Roberts next weekend for a three game series. They also started the season 3-0. They went 38-21 last year and advanced to the TCU Regional in the NCAA.
