Title: Rifle (and Handgun) Thread
Post by: ssmith general on February 28, 2011, 07:18:46 PM
I just ordered a bull barrel for my Ruger 10 22, got the threaded one with a compensator, had to order a new stock too.  I went all black.  Should be pretty pimp.  I have a 100 yard range setup in the back yard.

Before upgrading, I can put 25 shots in a 6" target from 100 yards in about 8 seconds.

so are you a gun expert?  I want to apply for a concealed weapon license (I live in Florida). I am trying to figure out what small handgun would be best to have. Any ideas?  I'm not looking for a REAL expensive one.

No, not an expert.  But I do have an opinion.  For a lady I would suggest a .38 revolver.   They are going to start around 350 for a Taurus and then go up from there.  You should look in pawn shops.  Make sure you are comfortable pulling the trigger or you can get them to make it more sensitive for you.

I'd recommend the Ruger LCP (first pic below) or a Smith & Wesson 642 (second pic).  The Ruger is a .380 semi-auto and the S&W is a .38 special revolver.  Both great for women!

My wife has shot the Ruger and actually liked it, which was a shock.  And, it's very light and I've found perfect for concealed carry.

Use loctite when installing new barrels. I dont understand why that was not in the instructions.  I got it worked out.

Never even looked at it.  I collect older knives mostly.

Some Walther Pistols and Belgium Browning.

I recall a Sunday morning on TS when I said I was "off to work" (going to a show).  I had tables at that one.  Someone answered, "You a preacher?"   ;D  Hardly.

I have a friend in the country who has a target range (his field).

Thanks for the evening.  Enjoyed this forum.

I barely notice it when I carry it--I have it in a Blackhawk size 1 pocket holster.

I'm not a big fan of the trigger pull, but then again, I didn't buy it to put thousands of rounds through it at the range.  I bought it for my wife, who has yet to get her concealed carry permit, so for now it goes with me.

I really like 1022; have several and sold one recently.  It's a good Ruger, easy to clean, clip (safe), and inexpensive.  Semiautomatic, but okay for kids under supervision.  There are plenty of upgrades, but first I'd consider adding accessories.  You can get different stocks, scope mounts, laser sights, additional and different magazines, and much more.

If you upgrade within 22, consider some of the collectible European rifles.  There are some great old Mausers and other hunting rifles that will become guns for life (collectibles) for him.

If he can handle heavier guns, 30 cal... (opens all doors).

I'd stay with a 22 cal for someone who is 12.  Ammo is cheap, and there are plenty of options.  If he wants to kill deer, that's different.

Bottom line: I'd invest in a vintage Mauser.  Go to a local gun show or shop and try some of them.  The old Mausers are sweet.  Don't forgot to let go of it after you buy it FOR HIM. :D

Wow.  A 12 year old would probably like one of the tactical set ups.  If you google Ruger 10 22 accessories you can find many different stocks.

I am assuming you know little about guns. Revolvers are simple to operate. The woman carries a Smith Titanium .38. Plenty of knockdown, light, simple. Your carry permit instructors probably also conduct shooting classes, or you could use the SSmith method and blast your neighborhood with millions of rounds til you get it.

Need a little more info. Do you want to carry or is this primarily for home/car defense? Do you prefer revolver for reliability or pistol?

Check out the Kel-Tec P-3AT .380 caliber. It's super light and compact and you can wear it in your front pants pocket and not even know it. It's a very affordable firearm. Also, police carry them for backup. Trust me on this one. ;D

The Ruger LCP ain't bad, either.

Yep, the Ruger LCP is my "summer" carry gun, and in my opinion, a better quality gun than the Kel-Tec P-3AT.

My winter carry gun is a Glock 22 (.40 cal).  Such a sweet, smooth gun to shoot.

I was pretty impressed with the feel of the Springfield XD .40 cal--very smooth trigger, etc.  But, they're just heavier than the Glocks.

Yep, Marshals really like the Glock 22. I like the Sig .357. I fired the one my wifes cousin carries as a Federal Air Marshal. Really sweet shooting. We all went shooting along with his wife and 14 year old son. The poor kid had NEVER fired a firearm. I brought my revolvers so he could learn about basic handgun shooting. His dad showed him how to use my Ruger GP 100, but I had to show him how to use speed loaders. He fired several of my revolvers and autos. The kid loved it.

My first gun was a Beretta 92FS. It's a good gun, but a long barrel, so not great for concealed. Then I got a Springfield XD 40 Compact. I love it. It is a little heavier than the glock, but it's got a sweet trigger and nice power. It's my every day carry gun. I'd love to buy a Desert Eagle 50 just for the fun of seeing people's reactions to it. But those cost a pretty penny, and I'm not sure I could shoot it with any acuracy. LOL

Exactly.  If you get one, better plan on lots of time on the range, plus bring your wallet for ammo.

Heh. I just assumed that no one actually used a Desert Eagle. They just pull it out and wave it around and the bad guys wet their pants & run away. LOL. How much do rounds cost for the Desert Eagle? I've never ppriced it before.

It was sky high about a year ago (like all ammo), but now it's about $30/bx 20.  I had to look it up, but that's the same as it's been for 2 months.

I can't speak to the price because it was enough that the guy that took me shooting with his actually packed his own ammo. It made it fun picking up the used shells afterward.

I have had several handguns  and I now have a stainless Taraus 45 with gold accents. My approach is that if it comes down to having to defend my self I will not be looking to take prisoners. A story I heard years ago made me think about it. A Grand dad was out with a couple of his grand kids and three guys  came up to him when he had stopped and had gotten out of his truck. He refused to give the guys money and they shot him with a 22 hand gun, He falls back into his truck and comes out with a 357. Two of the three guys did not make it out of the highway. So for a handgun I would not consider any thing less than a 38.

The 92F is a beautiful handgun. It as the first auto most police agencies used in the early 1980's. The 84F Beretta .380 is another fine handgun. The barrel on the 92F is 4.9 inches. If I carry a duty firearm, I like a long barrel. I still have fond memories of a S&W Model 19 .357 mag with 6 inch barrel I used to have.

The best selection of Ruger accessories I have found is at cabellas.  But unless you're not from here, you'll have to order online.  I think the closest is New Orleans.

Link (http://www.cabelas.com/10-22-accessories.shtml)

I dont know if you have modded a ruger before, but I literally think a 5 year old could do.  Just make sure the stock is for the barrel, you have to get special stocks for bull barrels.

If I was a kid having a modded ruger would be the absolutely coolest thing ever.  I am 34 and it's close.

The safety is one of the little flip-switches near the top of the receiver. The way it is situated is sich that you have to manually trip the safety, and it's something you can't do unless you mean to do it. The Springfield XD40, by comparison, has 2 safeties, one on the trigger and one on the grip. With the Beretta, you can chamber a round and not worry about an accidental discharge unless you manually flip the safety off. You can even pull the hammer back and pull the trigger, and the round will not fire. With the Springfield, and other guns like it, if you chamber a round, it is ready to fire, and if you put your finger on the trigger and hold it by the grip, you have taken the safety off and it's ready to fire. For a new gun user, the Beretta is great because it's harder to fire without meaning to do so. That's why I say it's better for safety reasons.

I use to have a Ruger Redhawk .44 Magnum. that was a monster pistol it had the 12" barrell. It was very true on shooting. I could hit with it and I couldn't hit with no other pistol good at all. RTR!

I love my beretta. It's just fun to shoot, and it's so easy to keep clean. Another plus is that the safety is very good for gun users that are nervous about safety.

Please explain the superior safety, I am curious. My taurus revolver doesnt have one.  My ruger rifle has a cross bolt.

I don't have to worry about my Glock going off unless I have to pull the trigger, and I don't have to worry about any safeties when I want to shoot it, grip or otherwise.   :D

Here we go legal.

This is the before.  It has a 15 dollar tasco scope added and a 25 round clip.  It is the mini model, which retails around $300.  If you're going to customize, you may as well get the cheap one.  Hell, if you want the mini model, get the cheap on and I will give you my mini stock and barrel.

Here is the after.  It has the tactical solutions threaded bull barrel (http://www.cabelas.com/product/Shooting/Firearm-Components/1022-Accessories|/pc/104792580/c/104717880/sc/104815080/Tactical-Solutions-1022-Barrels/741608.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Fshooting-firearm-components-10-22-accessories%2F_%2FN-1102328%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_104815080%3FWTz_l%3DSBC%253Bcat104792580%253Bcat104717880&WTz_l=SBC%3Bcat104792580%3Bcat104717880%3Bcat104815080), with a compensator (http://www.cabelas.com/product/Shooting/Firearm-Components/1022-Accessories|/pc/104792580/c/104717880/sc/104815080/Tactical-Solutions-1022-Picatinny-Scope-Rail-and-Compensator/741607.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Fshooting-firearm-components-10-22-accessories%2F_%2FN-1102328%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_104815080%3FWTz_l%3DSBC%253Bcat104792580%253Bcat104717880&WTz_l=SBC%3Bcat104792580%3Bcat104717880%3Bcat104815080), a Hogue heavy barrel stock (http://www.cabelas.com/product/Shooting/Firearm-Components/1022-Accessories|/pc/104792580/c/104717880/sc/104815080/Hogue174-OverMolded8482-Ruger174-1022-Stocks/740007.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Fshooting-firearm-components-10-22-accessories%2F_%2FN-1102328%2FNo-0%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_104815080%3FWTz_l%3DSBC%253Bcat104792580%253Bcat104717880%26WTz_st%3DGuidedNav%26WTz_stype%3DGNP&WTz_l=SBC%3Bcat104792580%3Bcat104717880%3Bcat104815080) and a 50 dollar wal-mart 3-9X40 Bushnell scope.

Use either the Ruger 10 round magazine or spend the extra bucks on the 'steel lips' magazines, the ones with the plastic feeders start jamming after a couple hundred rounds.

I told Mrs Nalt last night that I'd like to have a .50 rifle.  Her response was, "what do you need one of those for?" to which I replied, "I don't need one, I want one."  She said that after we get our taxes that I can have $500 "mad" money to spend as I want.  Told her that I wouldn't be able to get the rifle that I want for $500.  But I'll take it... ;)

That's kind of my thought. I love shooting my ruger, but I dont see the point in my next rifle being anywhere in the middle.  I want the biggest and baddest... Wont happen for a long time.

On another note, and i have never shot one, but I know you can get 50 cal for the black powder rifles.  Someone back on TS was saying they are pretty fun to play with.  Anyway, you could get a lot of black powder guns and stuff for 500 bucks.

Yeah, I've thought about the black powder guns but I'd rather have one of the military types.  Just lock & load and fire away...

so are you a gun expert?  I want to apply for a concealed weapon license (I live in Florida). I am trying to figure out what small handgun would be best to have. Any ideas?  I'm not looking for a REAL expensive one.

I'd recommend the Ruger LCP (first pic below) or a Smith & Wesson 642 (second pic).  The Ruger is a .380 semi-auto and the S&W is a .38 special revolver.  Both great for women!

New to this forum but a long term gun owner and shooter.  I happen to own both the Ruger LCP and a couple of S&W airweight revolvers.  The Ruger LCP is easier to conceal, but the S&W revolvers are easier to shoot in my opinion.  Which I carry is determined by what I'm wearing that day.  The slide on the LCP may be difficult for a woman to operate comfortably.

As for shooting, my favorite guns are a S&W mod. 19, .357 mag. and a Kimber Mod 1911 .45 ultra compact carry II.
