Title: Baseball to Reopen Sewell-Thomas Stadium this Weekend against Maryland
Post by: pmull on February 19, 2016, 07:05:04 AM
Baseball is back on campus at "The New Joe".

Quote
The Crimson Tide will embark on a new era of Alabama baseball, kicking off the 2016 season at the newly renovated Sewell-Thomas Stadium this weekend. The Maryland Terrapins will visit Tuscaloosa for a three-game set, the first meeting between the two programs.

The two teams are scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. CT start in the inaugural game at "The New Joe" on Friday. Saturday's contest will start at 3:30 p.m. CT, while Sunday's finale is slated for a noon CT first pitch on getaway day. All three contests will air live on SECN+ with Mick Gillispie on the play-by-play and former Crimson Tide standout pitcher Lance Cormier providing the color.

Bama wins 3-1

Freshman Chandler Taylor hit a home run in his first collegiate at bat.

The starting Maryland pitcher is an all American.

Not bad for a bunch of guys picked by the coaches to finish last in SEC.

Roll Tide.

It was a big night at The New Joe last night with the stadium almost full and some good weather and Bama winning 3-1. It was only fitting that Bama's first hit and run in their new stadium would be a home run and by a freshman, Chandler Taylor who was 2 for 2 for the night.

Both teams struggled at the plate the entire game but Bama prevailed in the end with some timely hits to get the win. I was impressed with their abilities to move their base runners via the bunt to get them into scoring position, something that Bama hasn't had much success with in the past years.

Keller, Foster, and Burroughs got the job of closing out the game for Bama on the mound with some very good relief pitching as Keller was the winning pitcher.

Bama played well in their first game and Maryland is a quality team so getting the win in their opening game was very big for Gaspard and his team. If they had lost last night, the critics would have been howling. They play again at 3:30 this afternoon following the Tide's basketball game with Miss State. I'm guessing there may be more fans in the stadium this afternoon due the basketball fans being next door.

Thanks for the report, J. I know you had to be tickled to death to watch the first game in the new stadium! Glad we came out with the win.

Yes it was a good night for the baseball team, lots of eager fans and a win which is very important for the team and coach. They had a big fireworks show after the game which was very entertaining for the youngsters that stayed for the whole game. There were lots of baseball scouts at the game and it was interesting to watch them do their job. They seemed to like Burroughs relieving at the end of the game as their jugs guns and video cameras were very busy. I talked with the one of them who was with the Mariners and we talked basketball. He is from the Northeast and Villanova is his team. He didn't know that Avery Johnson was the coach at Bama and had lots of nice things to say about him.

The scouts had some good pitchers to scout last night. Bramblett should be a high pick this year for us. Burrows is a very good reliever. Maryland's starter is an All-America coming off a 13-2 season last year. I hope they stay away from our power hitting freshman right fielder Chandler Taylor. I would like to see him stay for 3 years.

Quaility win for Bama. It was important to win the first game in "The New Joe". It was also important for the team and staff to get that win.

Sophomore RH Jake Walters expected to pitch today. The game is shown live on ESPN+ at 3:30.

Bama wasn't as fortunate today as they were last night as they lost 9-5 to the Terps.

A 6 run 4th inning was too much for Bama to overcome. Bama pitching walked a batter and gave up a home run three times in the inning. 6 runs on 3 hits. We only walked 4 batters but all of them scored.

Alabama out hit the Terps 13 to 8 but we could only score 5 runs. We left 10 runners on base compared to their 3. Freshman second baseman Cobie Vance went 4 of 4 including a 2 run HR. Alabama did not make any errors.

The two teams play the rubber match at 12:00 today on SECN+. Junior RHP Nick Eicholtz is expected to start today's game.

Bama gets an insurance run in the 8th to lead 3-1. Still batting with a runner on 1st and 1 out. Maryland changing pitchers.

Bama is ahead 5-1 now, and the Terps' 4th pitcher is trying to get them out of the 8th.

This was a good Maryland team we beat this weekend.

Maryland was ranked 27 in the preseason polls. The pitcher we beat on Friday night is an All-American. He was 13-2 last year and projected as the top pitcher in this years draft. He is a 1st rounder.

Maryland finished last year at # 14. They were 42-24 and won their regional before losing in the Super regional.

This was a good way to start the season for our team. This should provide a boost of confidence that our young team needs.

I really like our pitching staff. If they can get some offensive support we may be a pretty good team.
