STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Joe Paterno’s tenure as coach of the Penn State football team will soon be over, perhaps within days or weeks, in the wake of a sex-abuse scandal that has implicated university officials, according to two people briefed on conversations among the university’s top officials.

The board of trustees has yet to determine the precise timing of Paterno’s exit, but it is clear that the man who has more victories than any other coach at college football’s top level and who made Penn State a prestigious brand will not survive to coach another season. Discussions about how to manage his departure have begun, according to the two people.

Paterno was to have held a news conference Tuesday but the university canceled it less than an hour before it was scheduled to start.

At age 84 and with 46 seasons as the Penn State head coach behind him, Paterno’s extraordinary run of success — one that produced tens of millions of dollars for the school and two national championships, and that established him as one of the nation’s most revered leaders, will end with a stunning and humiliating final chapter.

Jerry Sandusky, a former defensive coordinator under Paterno, has been charged with sexually abusing eight boys across a 15-year period, and Paterno has been widely criticized for failing to involve the police when he learned of an allegation of one assault of a young boy in 2002.

No way Paterno can stay after this.  He's past his prime, past his time, and now is implicated in a mess.  He's likely wondering why he stayed so long.

People are saying he did what the law required by reporting the incident.  But clearly he knew there was a problem, and knew that kids were being assaulted, and he didn't do what is expected of a person of his stature (help resolve the problem).

Unfortunately, JoPa will forever be remembered as someone who helped cover the scandal, even though he didn't do it directly.  It's a shame and shameful.

I think Joe Paterno and Bobby Bowden both tarnished their legacies by staying in the game too long.  Paterno has tarnished his more than Bobby Bowden, though.  It would have been better for them both to retire several years before they did.  They still would have both gone out as a couple of the greatest coaches ever, but also they would have gone out with grace and dignity.

This is why coaches should not be around when they're like 75 or older. In 2002, when Paterno was around 74 or 75, is when he was informed of the assault in the shower. Did he fully grasp what was told to him? Was he so close to Sandusky that he couldn't see clearly? Most everyone in that athletic department owes their job to Paterno, which is another huge problem. Like I said in another post, they need to thoroughly clean house, fumigate the place, and establish some firm rules, like no little kids with non-relatives are allowed in the facilities.

I would not be surprised if Paterno is out before this weekend.

The cover up by the AD and VP coupled with the probability of Paterno's involvement in not reporting these matters straight to the state police has led to more children being abused.

Also opens up PSU to millions and millions in liability lawsuits.

Apparently JoePa wants to answer media's questions. The school is shielding him. Hope that press conference happens.

JoePa is somebody I want to like, but after this, I have no respect.  I would imagine any player worth anything character-wise would have to feel the same way, especially considering the boys who were abused are probably college aged  (and a little older) by now.  He needs to leave.

Bobby Bowden and Lou Holtz also come to mind as people who stayed past their prime.  Spurrier is knocking on the door IMO.  Their legacy won't be tarnished nearly as bad as Paterno's.

I am going to give JoePa the benefit of the doubt, for now.  I just can't imagine he knowingly allowed this to happen.  There has to be a reason he didn't go to the police.

I feel the same way SUPERCOACH......we need to have a better understanding of what, when  in regards to JoePas side of the story. I thought the Grand Jury commended JoePa on his actions.....

I am so confused that the coach I knew who hd good battles with CBB on the football field, and now he has participated in allowing young kids to be molested? I don't know what to say. We see people with a past of trust and honesty and then find out he was a wolf in sheep's clothing just blows me away. Will his legacy of a great football coach follow him or the latter scandal and football means nothing? Man what a bumper. RTR!

After you pass the info on.... I would think you'd inquire about it about a day or two later. If it wasn't acceptable go to the police yourself.

Here's Penn State president Graham Spanier, shown with his boss Joe Paterno. (AP photo)

Why Joe Paterno can’t be allowed to coach another game

Penn State felt the need to cancel Joe Paterno’s press conference Tuesday but allowed him to conduct practice later that afternoon. On Saturday the Nittany Lions will play host to Nebraska. Paterno cannot be allowed to lead Penn State onto the field.

The New York Times reports that, in May 1999, Paterno told Sandusky he wouldn’t become Penn State’s  head coach when the incumbent, meaning Paterno, retired. Could it have been mere coincidence that, in 1998, Penn State had investigated Sandusky for showering with an underage male? No charges were filed, but Sandusky announced in the summer of 1999 that he would retire as defensive coordinator — at the not-exactly-advanced age of 55.

Did Penn State know back then that such a man couldn’t continue to represent it and nudge him aside? If so, why didn’t it inform the proper authorities? If so, why did it continue to allow Sandusky to hold emeritus privileges on campus and to use team facilities? This is no trifling issue: It was, according to the grand jury’s presentment, in a Penn State locker room that Sandusky was allegedly seen having sex with a 10-year-old — in 2002.

This was the act allegedly witnessed by Mike McQueary, then a grad assistant and now Penn State’s recruiting coordinator. McQueary told Paterno what he’d seen, and Paterno told his superiors, and then nothing much happened for a very long time.

Grand jury testimony indicates he knew and gave the info to his superior. That maybe offers his excuse according to the law. According to BAMAWV law he became as guilty as Sandusky when he saw the AD and Pres. sweep this crime under the rug and did nothing. He is as guilty as if he held a boy down while Sandusky raped them.

Paterno had to know something was wrong or else he's the biggest ignoramus on the planet. He's guilty of either ignoring rthe problem, being incredibly stupid, or just not caring. Either way, he should be fired immediately.

In 1990 my family was tailgating in Tuscaloosa before the PSU game. Some Penn. State fans came by and we discussed the game. I remember them telling us to watch for the linebacker LaVar Arrington. Sure enough we were killed by PSU 19-6 and Arrington led their defense. He went on and had a great NFL career.

Quote
LaVar Arrington speaks his mind on the Jerry Sandusky investigation and the Penn State football program

LaVar Arrington, an All-American and a first-round pick of the Washington Redskins, adored Jerry Sandusky.

That time is long gone.

Paterno and McQueary are knee-deep in this thing. According to the Attorney General report, McQueary, then a PSU grad assistant, walked in on Sandusky assaulting a young boy in a Penn State facility in 2002.

In the detailed account of the Sandusky investigation, McQueary, apparently shaken up by what he was seeing, did not attempt to stop the assault. Curley did not contact authorities about what McQueary had witnessed. Neither did Paterno, although the Attorney General's office has made it clear that Paterno did nothing wrong.

"I know Mike [McQueary]. Mike was my quarterback,'' Arrington said.

"I know him. So I'm trying to understand, how do you, and again, maybe he felt as though it would be better suited if it came from Coach Paterno. … I'm going to tell you right now, I gotta stop that [assault].

"Even if it's, 'Coach [Sandusky], I gotta stop you. …  I gotta take this to Coach Paterno right now'. This is not good, oh my gosh, this is not good.''

Arrington added: "The natural instinct that would kick in, if I saw a child being violated, and I don't care who they are, I don't care who the person is that would be doing that.

If you're an adult and you are violating a child, all reputations, all everything, all that goes out the door.

"The reason why I wanted to talk about it as a former player of Penn State and someone who I feel has represented our institution in the highest manner that I possibly can … um, it's about the kids,'' Arrington said.

"And it needs to be discussed and it needs to be talked about.''

Added Arrington: "Innocent or not, this is just … it's just bad.''
