All of these puffy testosterone-infused NRA platitudes are great for message boards. Who among you will go to the door of the wife of the campus cop who killed himself because he walked into a classroom and accidentally shot the kid who raised his legally permitted weapon on the lunatic who started shooting his classmates at random. People with uniforms should have guns. People without them shouldn't. Especially on a college campus.

Here's another thing. We need to completely rethink what we tell the public about what to do in these situations. If a gunman is outnumbered by people who are too close to effectively flee, folks need to be trained to throw books or backpacks or phones or whatever at the guy, give a blood curdling rebel yell (yankees will need to receive special training), and charge him. One or two folks will be hit and the party will be over for the lunatic. It makes me sick when I think about all the innocent lives that could have been saved at VT or NIU if this approach had been taken, instead of folks just waiting to be mowed down.

This inflamatory rhetoric does nothing to further the discussion toward useful conclusions. You had to throw in the part about the married cop killing himself. But if a citizen gunowner was engaged in a shootout with a crazed gunman, he was from that point on saving innocent lives. If a cop then injected himself into that situation, firing indiscriminately, perhaps he should kill himself for being stupid and making things worse.

The big promise for having citizens armed is first a deterent. But in a crazed gunman killing spree, the number of lives one gun in the hands of a trained, licensed citizen would save many lives. I think that was how the Ft. Hood gunman died (more about that later). If our hero gunowner is shooting he is distracting and limiting the shooting spree. Countless  lives may be saved waiting on law enforcement response times. From then on, anyone injecting themselves into the fray (cops) should make themselves known from the sirens on the streets to identifying themselves door to door,--they are trained to do so. Once law enforcement arrives, any gun permit guy would automatically stand down, unless he is engaged.

The answer is sadly the addition of more cops any place where civilians are not allowed to carry. Another helpful procedure would be for university to be more active in identifying these nuts before a classroom to classroom battle ensues. Liberals, thick on college campuses, are so concerned with hurting someones precious feelings as to demand to know what this crazy nut is doing on campus in the first place, disrupting everyone else's harmony. At VA. Tech and Ft. Hood, the warning signs about these 2 shooters couldn't have been more clear if they had been towed behind the Goodyear Blimp.

Per multiple sources, Crowell has been dismissed by Richt. I guess what Spurrier said about playing UGA early is good is right. Half the team is still suspended.

Right.  Here's the confirmation:

I guess he will end us at Jax St or with Malzahn at Arkansas St.

What a waste. He showed some skills as a true freshman last year.

This approach is not my idea. It was advocated by a Krav Maga instructor who was showing a group of us some gun take-aways and such. No bleeding heart liberal was he. A serious security professional, well armed and well trained.

Sorry for going hard to the hoop on this issue. I have seen too many innocent people harmed by gun violence and accidents. I'm back to sports.

There's a major problem in our society today but I don't think there is a politician alive that wants to attack it. The gun isn't the problem, it's the person that is holding it. Wink

Liberals always exaggerate the #s when it  comes to accidental deaths involving firearms. But when the numbers are broken down, these accidental deaths mostly occur in homes where the guns are illegal anyway. Crack heads leaving their guns on the coffee table while they shoot up a rock in the bedroom. Every week there is a story about a ghetto kid going to school with a gun and a baggie full of dope and cash. Enforce the laws on the books as it stands now, and enforce them to the max. People around here have always been around guns. They know how to use them.. Their children know how to use them. They know they are always loaded. Never any accidents.

And a well trained practitioner of Krav Maga, at very close range, might be successful. If he was throwing books before the badguy pointed the gun at him. A bunch of normal college students would have no chance at all. Someone hopped up* to commit mass murder, throwing books, desk... will only drive him crazier.
And trust me, as someone who is trained as a SWAT Medic (Tac / Med) I have studied on "Active Shooter" situations a little more than most people.

I hate to say it, but Richt has already lost this team.     Shocked

Quote
According to a police report issued Friday, the serial number on a 9-millimeter Luger found under the driver's seat had been scratched off completely, but Crowell denied knowing a gun was there, saying other people drive his car.

Police said the altered ID-mark charge stems from the tampered serial number.

Crowell could face a fine of up to $10,000 and a jail sentence between two and 10 years if found guilty of weapons possession on school property, while a guilty verdict for criminal use of an article with an altered ID mark carries a sentence between one and five years.

Crowell also said teammates Blake Tibbs, Quintavius Harrow, Josh Harvey-Clemons and Sheldon Dawson, who were passengers in the car, had just left a club called Aftermath, according to the police report.

  • EnlargeIsaiah Crowell
Dale Zanine/US PresswireIsaiah Crowell faces felony weapon counts of possession in a school zone and altered identification mark and a misdemeanor concealed-weapon count.

The arresting Athens-Clarke County Police officer stated she smelled marijuana inside the 2005 Mercury Grand Marquis that Crowell was driving.

I respect your experience, so tell me more. What do you and your sources say folks should do in a VT situation. Is it really to hunker down and wait to be killed.

Well, if some of the students had availability to a gun, they could have stopped this VT situation, instead of waiting to be killed. It's kind of like having someone breaking into your house, but you just wait to be a victim and hide under the bed, if you have no firearm. If someone is afraid of guns and doesn't want to have one, fine, but don't penalize me because of your fear. I definitely know how to handle a firearm and when to use it. I always carry a firearm, not just for my own protection, but in case I need to help someone in major trouble.

The bottom line is: Crowell was dismissed from the team yesterday, apparently permanently.
