Glad he picked UGA. I guess we dodged a bullet.

No kidding.
Makes you wonder; after the weapons issues with Aub players, how common is it for players to carry guns?  Is it the norm among thug-type players?

UGA has had a lot of discipline problems for several years now. Coach Richt has to be pulling his hair out trying to figure out how to get his guys under control. This could be his chance to make a statement to his team and punish his starting tailback severely. A slap on the wrist and he may loose this team if he has not lost them already. UGA should be dominating the east with UT and Florida down and they are not. This is looking like another year with CMR on the hot seat.

I am tried of hearing Coach Richt is a nice guy but......

Dont forget Rolando McClain.  Apparently it is quite common.

I haven't forgotten Ro's episode, but I was thinking about current players having guns on campus.  Most every school bans weapons on campus (weird that new laws in Mississippi allow it with special permits), but the campus cops enforce it only when other laws are broken.

It gives the Tyrants less control.

How things have changed when a star football player feels he must "act the thug" for attention.  I guess Parade All-American, SEC All-Freshman and such were not enough street cred for him.

 Huh?

There WAS a no-guns-on-campus law in Mississippi, but it was recently replaced with a new law ALLOWING guns (with permits).

This is consistent with the 'no one ever says, "Hey, let's go rob the gun show" theory'.  If a criminal or psychopath is gauranteed a target that can't fire back, it appeals to their cowardly instincts. Further, if there is a chance that he will not be the only one with a gun on campus, he'll maybe reconsider and pick a school that has a gun free environ.

All of these puffy testosterone-infused NRA platitudes are great for message boards. Who among you will go to the door of the wife of the campus cop who killed himself because he walked into a classroom and accidentally shot the kid who raised his legally permitted weapon on the lunatic who started shooting his classmates at random. People with uniforms should have guns. People without them shouldn't. Especially on a college campus.

Here's another thing. We need to completely rethink what we tell the public about what to do in these situations. If a gunman is outnumbered by people who are too close to effectively flee, folks need to be trained to throw books or backpacks or phones or whatever at the guy, give a blood curdling rebel yell (yankees will need to receive special training), and charge him. One or two folks will be hit and the party will be over for the lunatic. It makes me sick when I think about all the innocent lives that could have been saved at VT or NIU if this approach had been taken, instead of folks just waiting to be mowed down.

ATU, I see your point.  Did you know that faculty and staff at Ole Miss are trained by the campus police for such a contingency?  I sat in on a session.  Much as you suggest here, the intent is to give the shooter fewer easy targets, and stop the shooting with a backpack, chair, books, whatever...  The police also discussed the worry about identifying the shooter when others have guns with them at the scene.

Ugly to think about, and off topic, so I'll just end by saying I hope Mr Crowell is appropriately punished.
