Italy charges geologist with manslaughter for not predicting earthquake

Italy charged their seismologist with manslaughter for not predicting an earthquake. 

I wish I was joking.

Italian government officials have accused the country's top seismologist of manslaughter, after failing to predict a natural disaster that struck Italy in 2009, a massive devastating earthquake that killed 308 people.

A shocked spokesman for the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) likened the accusations to a witch hunt.

"It has a medieval flavor to it -- like witches are being put on trial," the stunned spokesman told FoxNews.com.

Enzo Boschi, the president of Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), will face trial along with six other scientists and technicians, after failing to predict the future and the impending disaster.

Let's see. Harold Camping makes asinine predictions that have zero basis, sends many people into a tizzy and is wrong and yet is still making more predictions and walking around a free man. These poor guys who are UNABLE to predict something like an earthquake are jailed for NOT making a prediction. Something isn't right here .....

I know you are joking, but in all seriousness, I very rarely make firm statements related to my work.  I use words such as "likely" "probable" "possible" "potentially" and "unknown".

Correct me if I am wrong here general (geology was never my strong suit), but predicting earthquakes seem to be much harder to do with complete certainty than are severe weather formations.

predicting earthquakes is impossible at this time.  There are major variables we do not know.  All we can do is look at history and give very broad time frames or say something appears to be "due".

No where near the ability to predict weather.

The US then informed Belgium they would be moving NATO Headquarters and all US folks from Belgium. This meant the loss of THOUSANDS of jobs and billions of dollars. Belgium and the prosecutor announced no indictment would be issued. I love it.

Yeah, Belgium passed one of those feel good laws which stated they could indict war criminals anywhere in the world, even if Belgium had no involvement or an act against Belgim. Like I said, just another wacky liberal idea meant to give Belgians a warm fuzzy feeling about themselves. Trying to make themselves a player in world events.
