Mark Barron has gone from being a standout high school player at St. Paul's in Mobile, Ala., to helping Alabama win a national championship in 2009.

He has earned All-America honors for two consecutive seasons, has helped Alabama return to the BCS national championship game this season and has found himself a finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award and tonight's Bronko Nagurski Award.

And it all started in his grandmother's front yard.

"Growing up, we played in her front yard all the time," Barron said Sunday night. "We played every day. We'd even play in the street -- paved streets -- and we played tackle without pads. We just wanted to play." ...
