Title: Where does Jalen Hurts Transfer To?
Post by: Marshal Dillon on December 04, 2018, 10:52:23 PM
I don't see Jalen staying another year. He has one year left & wants to play in the NFL. I think he wants to show folks he can play in the NFL.

Places he might land:

Tennessee (Pruitt)
Maryland (Locksley)
FAU (Kiffin)
Florida (Mullins)
Texas
Texas A&M (Fisher)
Misses State

This thread is premature until after Bama wins the Championship and we hear from Jalen.   Let's not kick Jalen out the door.  :)

He's already seen what a year of "development" in Kiffin's system will do for him (nada), so I can't imagine him going there.

I don't see him transferring because he knows he is leaving a Championship team to go to a lesser one. How could he make his stock go up better than showing his stick to it no matter. He is a Bama man who has only lost 2 games in his career. I just don't see it. RTR!

There are players every year that get drafted and earn more $$ than Bama players so being a part of a Championship team in college doesn't really translate to being super successful in the NFL.

Maybe he'll transfer, maybe he won't. Let him try to help us win another Natty, then we can speculate til the cows come home (which if you are at Auburn ain't too long).

In order to advertise yourself to the NFL you MUST start. Having one great quarter will not get the job done. He was replaced by Tua for a reason and we all know what that was. Right now, he won't even get drafted.

Since we're now in the speculation discussion mode I think Jalen goes to Auburn and in the meantime CNS name's Gus our offensive coordinator , Head coach in waiting after this season CNS goes to Auburn as their head coach in the meantime GUS wins three national championships with CNS recruits at Alabama in the fourth year CNS at Auburn wins the national championship :tinfoil:

You have a point, but I think it's more than just advertisement.  It's proof in the way of a body of work as to your capabilities and limitations.  No one is going to draft a QB strictly based on combine measurables or throwing in drills.  And further, Jalen still has to improve to get to the level of a draftable QB, and it's impossible to achieve the same level of improvement getting 25% of the practice reps and very few meaningful game snaps compared to getting 75% of the game prep snaps and 90% of the game time.

That's why I listed locations like Florida, A&M, Texas, etc. They have coaches known for developing QB's. His biggest negative is he is one & done if he transfers, meaning they would expect immediate results from him. I really don't know what is going to happen with all these factors are taken together.

WRONG.

Matt Cassel spent his entire college career at USC backing up Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart at USC. He never started a game at QB in college.  (33 pass attempts in 4 years.)  Yet he was drafted and has now played 14 years in the NFL.

In contrast, Jalen has 28 college starts, plus a win vs. USC in which he was third string, and a come-from-behind win vs. Georgia.  That's 30 games, plus a few more this season as backup.

I'm not sure that one example in the history of the modern NFL is a strong point.  What MD said is conventionally true.  And for full disclosure, the one example was the 17th pick in the last round (barely made it).

What about Brad Johnson? He never played a meaningful down at FSU, but did very well in the NFL.

He actually started half his Junior season and had close to 2,000 yards passing in college.  Drafted in the 9th round which no longer exists.  I guess there might be more examples out there, but it's not the norm, and both guys could have probably improved their draft stock with more playing time in college.

Bottom line is that Jalen has more starts, more wins and more playing time than many QBs who were drafted.

Jalen probably would improve his draft stock with more playing time... but I was correcting an obvious fallacy.

Jalen sure got a lot of kudos from the pro crowd

There were also multiple former SEC stars (plus a Heisman Trophy winner from the Big 12 and a Super Bowl MVP) who went on to play in the NFL who were amazed:
everyone from Kurt Warner to Jason Witten and even some pros from the barn
gave him props ... heck even Snoop Dogg put down his blunt long enough to
recognise Jalen ...

we will see   :dunno:

You can always find extreme exceptions in every situation but let's be realistic, the Jalen we saw in the SEC Championship game is not the one we saw in most of 2017. We had tremendous defenses in 2016 & 2017 with very solid running game to go with it. Tua has moved the offense eons ahead of last year. I wish the best for Jalen but facts are hard to ignore. He needs to start so he can improve his game and make him more viable as an NFL pick. I think he can do it, but not by riding the pine. Also, he won't have the likes of Juedy, I. Smith, D. Smith, or Ruggs to throw at. It's not going to be easy for him, no matter what.

I still can't see him transferring because Tua is prone to ankle injury and Jalen comes in does great things doesn't his stock go even higher? RTR!

I think Jalen would be drafted if he entered the NFL draft this year.  He has enough playing time that someone will take him, especially after recognizing his improvement at the Combine or Pro Day.

So the question isn't "where does Jalen transfer."  That's the wrong question.

The question is -- would it be worth it to Jalen to spend another year in college at another team learning another system and competing against existing players for the chance to start and improve his draft stock?  I'm not sure that it would.

While this worked for Russell Wilson, who went from NC State to Wisconsin to get noticed, Jalen already has played at the most visible school in the country.  He already led his team for two seasons to the Championship Game.  (He would have beaten Clemson if the defense could have held.)

I don't think Jalen needs more playing time.  He just needs to improve his game, which clearly he has done this year while backing up Tua.

The only question I see is, does Jalen stay another year at Alabama?   8)

OK I think this is the real question. His running is good, but he needs a little more proof in his reads and his passing game I think. Now if he does go I would think right now he is a 3rd or even a 4th rounder.  :D   RTR!

Wouldn't it be something if Jalen stuck around and continued working with the QB coach and then beat out Tua for the starting job next season?  I honestly don't think it would take all that much improvement actually.  He is already a better running QB so he would just need to step up his pass reads/play...

Last year I thought Bama would need Tua to beat Clemson.  Right thought, wrong team.

This year, it feels like Bama needs Jalen to win a Championship.

I think Jalen starts against Oklahoma due to more practice reps by him and Tua still not fully recovered and not 100%.

I hope so.  I don't want to see Tua playing at less than 100% in the first round, unless Bama absolutely needs him.  Given OK's defense, Bama hopefully won't need him.
