Concerns About Trevor Lacey

I find the evaluations of Lacey disturbing. Most of them show the same weakness in his game. Here's the one from ESPN:


Weaknesses:
The one area Lacey seems to struggle is when he is the primary ball-handler for his team. He has good size and strength to protect the ball but lacks that second gear to get by his defender or get himself out of trouble. Although he has improved, he gets loose with the ball at times and struggles when the defense speeds him up. The other area will be how his foot speed allows him to guard his position at the next level. Because he is not a great athlete he will have to use his basketball IQ and strength to his advantage.


Since Coach Grant is such a demon on playing defense, those observations bother me. It seems to indicate he is a good offensive player but a possible defensive liability. Just wondering.

To me it sounds like they are criticizing his offensive skills, in particular his dribbling skills.  I don't see the connection to his defensive skills.

As for the dribbling that is OK, we just need him to hang out past the 3 point line and let her rip if they play zone and put too many defenders in the paint to stop our inside game.  He can just pass the ball off to Releford if he gets in trouble.

I don't think it will be an issue.  Besides, after CAG spends some time with him I'm sure he will improve in every area.

You're right about the dribbling, but his foot movement is critical to playing D. He's not much use if he scores 15 points but lets the guy he's defending 16. Luckily, we have an outstanding defensive teacher in Coach Grant. I think that could be key in Lacey making his decision.

We're not worrying about what he can do now, we're just anxious to see him after CAG has him for awhile, right on!

Yea after CAG has him and sits him on the bench for a few times he will get better and better. RTR!
