Both Courtney Upshaw and Dont’a Hightower were among the four finalists announced Wednesday for the Lombardi Award. The honor, named for legendary coach Vince Lombardi, goes to the nation’s best lineman, though linebackers like Upshaw and Hightower are eligible.
Only six times in the 42-year history have two finalists come from the same school with the most recent occasion coming 12 years ago.
Hightower leads the Tide with 55 total tackles, six of which went for losses. Upshaw’s 12 1/2 tackles for loss and 5 ˝ sacks by far lead the team.
Cornelius Bennett was the only Alabama player to win the award back in 1986 while Auburn’s Nick Fairley earned it last season.
