They're always pointing out that Clemson "outgained" Bama 550 yards to 473 yards on offense.  But that stat fails to account for Drake's kick return and Clemson's extra possession.  Bama outgained Clemson on kick returns by nearly 130 yards, and if you add kick and punt returns, Bama had more total yards than Clemson.

Say what you want but the only stat that really, truly matters is that Bama had more points at the end of regulation than Clemson did...

... and as Saban said, 'many of their yards were gained when we led by 2 scores with less than 2 minutes left'.

I think what's gotten lost in the discussion is the way our D held Clemson drives to FGs.  They got lots of yards out of these drives but too few points.

In the 4th qtr our DBs had two pass breakups in the end zone.  Either could have easily been a TD.

We also stopped a 2-point PAT attempt.  Two FGs instead of TDs + missed 2-pointer = 10 points they did not score.  Made a big difference in the game.

We also had several sacks, especially late in 4th qtr that ate time.

So Clemson may have felt they were moving the ball and 'dominating' but they had too little to show for it.

CPPB used to say the only stat that matters is the scoreboard.

Also said, "Statistics are for losers."

BTW, much of this 'domination' talk started with Dabo.  He said they 'played well enough to win'.  He bragged on their team.  They indeed had a good team, BUT THEY LOST.  Maybe they played well enough to beat ACC teams; not the SEC.  HTH

Stats are for losers.

Here is a stat for the Clemson players: Bama had 24 fourth quarter points.

I rewatched the game today while grading essays.  Clemson did not dominate.  Clemson played a great game.  Bama played a better game.  Watson carried Clemson and kept it closer than it would have been against any other QB in America.  Saban and Kiffen outsmarted Clemson by exploiting weaknesses.
