Title: Playoff Committee's Impossible Task
Post by: ALTideUp on October 26, 2014, 10:12:28 AM
I just ran through a few websites discussing the possible rankings of the playoff committee. Their job is literally impossible given the dissonant results regarding who beat whom, and when. For example, Oregon is way higher than Arizona, who beat Oregon, because Oregon they beat highly ranked Michigan State, but Michigan State hasn't really beaten anybody. Ole Miss has beaten a lot of good teams, but they are at risk for falling below us, whom they beat, because they lost a close one to a team who has two losses but they are to teams in the top 6. It's all crazy.

The fact that there are so few games between the big conferences pretty much necessitates that the committee is going to have to either (a) respect conference champions, or (b) use the eye-ball test to determine which wins and losses count more by virtue of conference strength. Every conference likes to claim that it's losses reflect great teams beating up on one another. The committee is gonna have to decide if that's a legit claim.  I would hate to be them, but I'd love to be a fly on the wall at those meetings this week.

If there is one thing they can pin their hopes on it's that things will straighten themselves out over the next 5 weeks. But at least as far as the SEC is concerned, it's likely to look even uglier at the end then it does now. The second best SEC team may have 2 losses, and if ND, TCU, and Michigan State keep rolling, (not to mention  a possibly undefeated Marshall) there will be bedlam.

Well I can make it easier for the selection committee if they will listen. The Alabama football team should already be in the top 3 right now. So just have to pick 3 more teams. RTR!

It is a near impossible task but it will get somewhat easier as the season plays out. Upsets do happen.

Bama just needs to keep on winning.

I'm glad they didn't release preseason rankings, but it still seems a bit early to release rankings, given how many games are left to be played.  An early release will be nothing but trouble, in terms of the backlash, but also justifying any changes to the rankings week-to-week between two teams if both continue to win.  And some of the factors they are supposed to consider, like conference championships, don't even exist yet.

There's still a lot of football to play.  Things will begin to clear up.

Agreed. Hopefully Tide runs the table and MSU beats Ole Miss. That's all that matters to us right now.

I agree to an extent.  If your scenario plays out we would still HAVE to win the SECCG.  If we lose that game we're outta the playoffs as well...

Yeah, sorry. When I was writing that, I was including the SECCG in my head, but I should have made it more clear.
