Title: LSU v Texas, and other games of lesser import
Post by: Catch Prothro on September 07, 2019, 06:58:53 PM
Both teams fired up.

LSU stops Texas at midfield.  Texas punts.

LSU drives down to FG range and kicks a FG.

LSU 3  Texas 0  Early in the game

On 4th and goal from the 4, Texas throws an easy pass to a wide open receiver in the end zone. He dropped it and LSU takes over on downs.

Texas is play calling like they're up against a Big12 defense.  Two 4th and goal attempts, no points.  A long pass on 2nd and 2, thinking they could make third and 2 -- long pass incomplete, did not convert and punted.

LSU 3  Texas 0  LSU football.

Looks like an LSU interception.  Refs call catch by Texas.

Review says ball hits ground.  Maybe....

Yeah, incomplete pass, then Tejas runs hurry up and catches LSU off guard and throws a TD pass. Texas up 7-3.

LSU bogs down and settles for a FG. 13-7 LSU with a little over a minute until halftime.

The refs aren't so kind to LSU. Kind of like the last time they were in Texas.
That's because they're SEC refs trying to be impartial.

If they were Big12 refs, LSU would be totally hosed.

LSU TD!!!!!!

TD LSU to take 14 point lead with 2 1/2 minutes left.

LSU converted 2 point conversion.  I was hoping they would do that, practically guaranteeing they cover a 6.5 point spread even if TX gets a late meaningless TD.

The way Louisiana Monroe was scoring against the FSU defense by the end of the game, they would have won if they went for the two point conversion in OT1.

I was following the LSU game as best I could at work. The commentators kept going on and on about how amazing LSU has become. Yeah, they scored 45 points, but they did it against a Big 12 defense. And they gave up 38 points.

Going into Austin and winning was impressive. The way they're scheduled, there's a very real possibility that both Bama and LSU will be undefeated when they meet. I don't see 2011 level hype for that game though, because the LSU team I saw last night didn't look like a contender. The offense doesn't scare me in the least, and the defense has none of the nastiness that the 2011 LSU defense had.

I mentioned it in Coach's notes thread, the Texas O line was impressive against LSU's D. In fact, I'd say they manhandled them. As you said, that ole LSU nastiness is not there. At this point, I'm not worried either.

I know you guys aren't concerned about LSU.  But I saw a very good team that will get better as the season progresses.  Passes were very accurate into very tight windows.  This is by far the best offense LSU has fielded since they still had Saban players.

I'm not going to dismiss LSU that easily.  If they can correct defensive mistakes they'll be every bit as challenging as Georgia.

I’m not denying that they’re a good team. They’d almost certainly go undefeated in the Big 12 or PAC. They could probably beat OSU and win the BIG 10 on a good day. I just don’t think the amount of praise the commentators were heaping on them was justified. I saw a good team, not an elite team last night.

I agree CP. LSU's QB is much improved from last year and the up-tempo O was working.  Let's see how LSU does as they move into SEC games.  After all, that was a BIG12 D they were up against, and it showed.

On the subject of BIG12 D's.....they are making Jalen look good.

I don't see a loss ricky.  LSU does have a three week schedule of Florida, Miss. State and Auburn and could lose one of those games, but I think they're a good bit better than those teams and will handle them.

Texas's defense held Georgia to 7 points in the first three quarters of the Sugar Bowl.  So even though Georgia didn't want to be there, it still takes a good team to do that.

LSU is the home team for the both the Florida and Auburn games.  It might be the sandwich game, going to Mississippi State, where they don't prepare well.   Mississippi State also has a practice game the week before playing LSU (they play Tennessee).   :lol2:

But you might be right, when Les Miles was coach, and also under Orgeron, LSU has had games where they didn't prepare adequately.

LSU CRAMPS

I was very surprised at how many LSU players were down with muscle cramps.  At first I thought they were slowing the game, but it appeared real.  Sometimes there were 2-3 LSU players down at once.  Some players never returned.  It started early, but was especially bad right after halftime.  Texas didn't have isues with the heat like LSU did.

I wonder if LSU players were taking creatine at halftime (for quick energy and strength).  Without adequate hydration it can lead to cramps.

Surely they weren't simple out of shape.  Delpit, Divinity, and Shelvin all are quality players, but they went down several times.  WTH??

I wasn't paying too much attention to the timing or players involved.  Texas fans thought LSU was intentionally delaying the game and started booing.  That's what I assumed; that it particularly happened when Texas made a big play and wanted to go hurry up.  The splayed roach act.  But I wasn't counting

The three players you name are all defensive players.  Did the cramps impact LSU's offensive players as well?
